December update!

So with Cycles X I was able to move from Eevee to Cycles and man am I happy that I was finally able to make that change. The effect it has on the scene is really good and not having to find hacky ways of achieving what I want in terms of lighting feels so good. I'll probably need to use a render farm to get decent quality test renders because even at 30 samples a frame can take about 20 - 30 seconds to render, which while it's still incredibly better than the old Cycles is still too much for me to have to wait.

Most of this month was spent on dialing the existing scene lighting in, adjusting it so it looked good in Cycles, messing around with fog volumes and other beautification bits. I did some rough animation for the end, but it'll involve the car and characters interacting with a lot of scenery items dynamically so it's not worth showing off in its rough state. Instead, my focus shifted to enhancing and remodelling parts of the graveyard that were letting the scene down with how rough they were. I hope to replace everything eventually, especially the foliage which I want to replace with my own designs so it's more fitting to my art style.

For now, the major changes to scenery items were:

The Fountain

Too simple, too uniform. Needed to be a little more elaborate and to look daintier as it'll be a part of the final animation sequence. I took the old model and did some bevelling, extruding and assorted wiggle-waggling of vertexes to give it a much more elegant flowing shape, and also extruded the foundation bricks and gave a height difference to the larger base ones. Truthfully I'll probably remodel it with cleaner topologies, because mutilating the old version into this felt a little hacky, but it still turned out much nicer than I thought.





The Walls

Something I wanted to work on even before I got this comment:

The walls were a big mess from the start and needed replacing sooner rather than later, but Cycles in particular made how slapdash they were stand out like a sore thumb. The original walls were one big single object with UVs far too small to allow texturing with any real detail before they became a blurry mess, and the texture itself is something I bashed together with little thought to how the bricks should actually look. Other than just containing the scene this method was complete garbage because if I wanted to animate the walls getting busted or altered or hell, even extruding some of the bricks for the illusion of depth, it would be a gigantic pain in the arse.

My replacement plan was to have a few texture variants on independent modular wall models which could be clipped together as required, allowing me to alter the shape and patterns of each wall independently if I desired during the polish phase. I also needed to have a better idea of what brick walls actually look like, cue me standing outside for 30 minutes on Boxing Day with a notepad staring at a brick wall muttering under my breath as dog walkers kept their distance from the loon. Joke's on them though because it allowed me to put together a Substance Painter material that allows for bricks to have random darkness, random heights, different noise configurations and customisable cracks/deformation. It also gave me a chance to play with Displacement Maps which to my eyes are sorcery.

The end result is three wall models with different texture variants that tile with only a subtle seam, all of which can be independently altered without messing up the rest. The corners, cement tops and gate walls were all remodeled and given the new texture, and though it's not easy to see in the image (and very subtle in the animation itself unless under a close-up), the displacement maps give the walls an awesome crooked appearance that works great for my scene.







The Sign:

This thing was a big headache that I really didn't want to work on because I was attached to the old one and didn't know what to do, until I went and really looked at it and asked myself what I actually liked about it. The answer was pretty much just "the letters", which was the part which was piss easy to make about the sign. The old design just doesn't make much sense, being a big concrete and metal thing that is actually legitimately unreadable given that the moon is shining behind it and it's only lit up extremely briefly by the car's headlights. Back to the drawing board and I have this (currently untextured) sign that looks so much better. The light shines through it making the words immediately readable and still visible from the back, and I can put fun details like screws and supporting bolts to hold it up. Each letter is an individual object in case I want to add animated shenanigans to the mix.





Next on the agenda after texturing this: Replacement crucifixes with different variants because these ones are just... awful, a complete replacement of the boxy mausoleum, new spikes for the walls again with several variants and a complete overhaul of the scene's foliage - the floor is bare and ugly and I hate seeing it. This year I want the animation polished and ready for October, which was the plan last year but noooo way can I release it without a load of work. This is probably legitimately the longest I've ever worked on a hobby project before in my life and I've come too far to :effort: now.

I've not done any facial animations during the blocking stage so he won't always have pitbull jaw :v: That said there's definitely some changes I'd like to make with his eyelids, a remodel of the goggles and some work around the face, but honestly it's just the way I design characters. I'm not sure I can actually do cute without it coming off just as creepy :ohdear:

Today I worked out a nice way to create a dynamic lump under the surface of something without messing with sims.


Here I've got a surface, two empties, and Suzanne. The surface gets a proximity weight and cast modifier. Using proximity weight for this gives us full control of the falloff curve, you can even set a custom one. I've got a vertex group called prox with all the mesh's vertices assigned to it. The first empty is the proximity weight target, and functions as the center of the deformation. Here I just named it Prox. Both the second empty and Suzanne are parented to Prox. The second Empty is the center of the cast modifier, and can be offset however you want. You can use this and aim it in different directions. if you want. Suzanne is a stand-in for whatever object you feel like placing under the lump. This setup is fully dynamic and can be moved and animated as you wish.

(Okay it's not as cool as geometry nodes or a stake shooting car but I thought I'd share.)

well I used to know it. this is a humble brag so forgive me but now my renders are so fast I, I kind of miss having a sense of ďwhat will it turn out likeĒ.

when I first started with blender and luxrender Iíd leave it on overnight to get enough samples.

Honestly I like the framerate because it reminds me of a highdef version of those old 90's FMV game company logos

It just needs the words "VISUALEYES" or "HOUSE OF ART AND BEAUTY" or "iMAGEine" to fade in at the end

Replacing the wonky fence spikes with another set of modular ones that can be placed and tweaked independently. This is what drove me to do the wall and frontage remodels, because a set of wicked pointy spikes will be useful later in the anim :ohdear:

Last of the glowups for this month, this time replacing my garbage crucifix that I made at the beginning of the project. Five new variants to really add some visual variety to the graveyard's silhouette.















Planning to scatter a bunch of the twig ones on the run up to the graveyard with fancier ones towards the back of the graveyard. Honestly I probably didn't have to put half the effort into the design or textures because the scene is so dark, but I'll know and that's all that matters :v: I'm pleased that I could translate my garbo doodles to something cooler
