yes mookie does not know that deaf and mute are different things

He thinks because all the deaf people he sees in anime (Let's not pretend he watches anything else) are silent they're the same thing, when deaf people usually stay quiet because it's hard to speak correctly when you can't hear yourself.

Again a very likpatous story
Even if he can't speak properly he can at least make noise to get people's attention rather than throwing things at them. Even being charitable and assuming Mookie knows this (a big assumption, but still), he wouldn't be able to convey Snout shouting or just going "UHHHHHHHHHHHH" without it just looking like Snout is standing around waiting for someone to shove something in his mouth. That means he's forced to have Snout get people's attention in other ways, like throwing books at them. Which would probably make people think Snout is a violent rear end in a top hat.

For all we know, Snout could be making a constant horrible noise but since he can't hear it he doesn't write about it in his diary so we never read about it.

Snout's library card specifies "mute" as well. Of course, there's no reason given why he would be both. (And it's perfectly normal for a library card to include both your gender and physical disabilities. Totally normal).

Man, not only did Snout accidentally put on a shirt that doesn't have a "deaf" patch, but he never thought to make a "mute" patch! How embarrassing.

On that note, anyone else find it weird he's suddenly stopped wearing that patch, especially RIGHT after he got a new one? I'm guessing someone finally told Mookie it was a bad idea and he quietly retired it.

i'm pretty sure it's meant to be genuine rather than condescending, if only because there's this recurring theme in terraciano's works that nobody ever actually puts in work and effort into learning or self-improvement. you're either born smart, strong or gifted or you're not, and if you're not a prodigy by age 18, you'll remain what you are till death. neither character here actually even entertains the idea that snout can learn and be taught, because the author never entertains these ideas either. the fact that the character whose supposed primary trait is curiosity is satisfied with platitudes instead of knowledge is telling.

God drat, this comic just...

...

Like, I understand that comics have a weird relationship with time. It's a thing that you kind of have to accept. Characters will go on multi-sentence rants as they're flying through the air and the space in between panels is this hazy realm of implied action...but this is just taking this to a whole other level of failing to grasp the dynamics of a scene.

So, plant guy has just torn open his friggin ribcage, extended his weird vine penis and used it to magically bloom a word-flower and feed it to corpsemom. That all just happened at the very instant this page starts, as shown by him closing up his ribs again. Corpsemom has spoken and can be understood.

At this point, everyone in the room should really be doing one of two things: trying to communicate with talk with corpsemom to learn more about her, or talking to sunflower to figure out WTF he just did. This is not only the most relevant thing for the characters in the comic right now, but also for the audience who are operating on Snout's level, a bit behind everyone else because he can't listen in on real time. So, anyone invested in this wants to learn something about what's going on.

Instead, we get this bizarre aside where sunflower notices the book snout has dropped (I guess he really is dropping his diary every time mookie forgets to draw it from panel to panel) and picks it up. He either doesn't read the cover, doesn't know what a diary is or doesn't give a poo poo about snout's privacy and, for some reason, reading this book takes priority for him over everything that just happens. He spents at least a moment finding the latest page and reading it, likely quite a bit longer.

This is also a weird moment where we break one of the comic's big rules, and that is showing things only from Snout's direct perspective. He flexes the rule a bit when it comes to showing things that you could percieve if you were an observer currently looking at snout, even if snout himself is unware. This is used almost exclusively for gags about snout being deaf: the mongrelman pornpeddler, the monster sneaking up behind him, etc. and it's become significantly rarer as time goes on. It's like taking the third-person limited POV from prose and applying it to the comic in the clumsiest way.

Otherwise, an almost immutable rule has been "if snout is not in the panel, what you are seeing is what he is seeing." The sole exceptions to this were a few panels of the injured inkwitch in the first five strips or so, and arudak dispelling the pagefinder spell. Otherwise, Mookie has stuck to this rule almost religiously, to the detriment of everything else about the comic. This is why characters vanish as soon as they aren't directly interacting with snout, why it's impossible to tell where Snout is at any given moment or any sensation of time passing. It's why Snout encounters almost everyone by bumping into them or being assaulted by them. The absolute refusal to leave Snout's POV is one of many, many bad artistic choices in this comic.

But here it just kind of casually happens, for no reason: we get a shot of what Sunflower is clearly reading in snout's diary before he hands it back to snout. Not only is it bizarre to see the rule broken so casually, but it also serves absolutely no purpose: if you removed that panel this page would not only communicate the same information, but it would make more sense. We would see that Sunflower read something in snout's diary that made him feel midly distressed, he gives it back to snout with a kindly expression on his face and we see that he's written a message, telling snout he is stupid, but that's okay.

With the panel in place, we are shown what the page looks like presumably just before sunflower hands it back to snout and then we're shown that there is new writing now that snout has recieved it. It actually now implies that sunflower wrote the encouraging message after he handed snout the book back!

Also, what the gently caress is sunflower supposed to be writing with? He's obviously got no pen, the letters are spotty and that entire part of the page now looks discolored. Did he just crush some berries and smear them in snout's book? That's not cool.

Not only did Snout's core conflict "I'm too dumb for this" come out of nowhere, but it seemingly has been solved in 1 page.

My central question remains, though: why the gently caress is Snout here? Even if he's curious about Dominic Deegan, which is shaky at best, why do the others need him at all?

Maybe Arudak and IWP want to make him the balogne in a hatefuck sandwich?

The sole reason that has any kind of logic or textual basis is that his dreams are somehow of importance. They''ve had a significant lack of any relevant information: he remembered a poem he had read once in one dream and some symbols appeared in a few more, to no particular meaning. Beyond that it's been nonsense abstraction.

IWP stated that her dream magic was allowing her to see his dreams, but the significant dreams occured even on nights when she wasn't around, so one assumes that they're a quality of snout's, possibly intended to be a result of him collecting the pages in chapter 1?

But, given that both IWP and Arudak are researching the papers, and IWP explicitly knows how to use dream magic, you'd think they'd tell snout if any of that seemed important to them.
