This is something I could understand, like maybe a writer can see that their character is coming across as overly childish and wants to fix that perception. But another writer might have Snout talk to Orc lady about how he's tired of all his friends treating him like a kid, mentioning that he's in his late twenties, early thirties or whatever and then reminding the audience that he's survived on his own for years. And then maybe slide into some flirting and a one night stand. But here Snout just leaps in like an overly eager teenager and then says a swear. Which is just another kind of immature. But even the fully consensual snuggling hasn't had any implication that Snout has conflicted feelings about sexuality and intimacy. So again, it feels like a retcon of his past behavior. The thing is, there is an explanation for why he didn't act this way around them. With IW she's never shown any overt attraction to him, instead she sleep snuggles and pats him on the head. And Kaianda is having all sorts of issues and she relies on Snout, so making any sort of sexual advance on her would be gross as hell. But Snout's feelings on the matter are never discussed because he's too busy providing us with recaps and playing with his toes.

Well remember this isn't the first time he's hosed. This isn't even the second time. He says this happens every time he gets horny. If it had only happened once before this, he would probably say "This happened the last time I got horny," so him saying "every" implies this is at least the third time. But "we hosed" feels jarring in another way and that's that it kind of doesn't fit the soft boi image Snout has been given. This is probably on purpose, so that Mookie can say "See Snout is an adult" (and as someone mentioned, he never used "gently caress" in the original DD so this seems like him using it as a way of showing how much more "mature" Legacy is) but it feels like a Nice Guy like Snout would be more likely to use the phrase "had sex." "We hosed" sounds like the sort of thing a gross jock would say.

It's jarring because it's not snout writing a diary page, it's mookie telling the viewer how progressive he is, by breaking the taboo around sexual language and using the word "hosed" casually, and talking about how that loving was a blissful, mutual act.

Mookie said that "there may even be loving, consensual sex scenes if the story calls for them". So he considers this loving sex and thinks that the story called for it. Also, regarding this sex scene, he said "while it may seem gratuitous at the moment, there’s a point to it". I don't know if he means there's going to be a good story reason for it coming up, or if it's just his "point" of having sex now because he had so much violence before. So here's the other thing about this as a moment of reckoning for Snout: So far, the framing has been consistent that Snout's character flaw is his ability, not his character. "Your kindness more than your learning" and all of that. As far as Mookie is concerned, Snout's intentions have been pure and altruistic every step of the way - through the Long Flight, through the fishing, through Arudak's research tower - and the thing standing in his way has been his own lack of confidence and competence. After all of that, the idea that this is where Snout and the comic are suddenly self-aware about Snout neglecting his duty to his friends to focus on his own needs? I think that's where a lot of the whiplash is coming from. It's not consistent with his intended or actual characterization up to this point.
