Thank you mookie for reminding me that Snout's deaf, I'd completely forgot after the last dozen times you told me!

It's a bit early to judge the pacing, we don't even know what kind of story he's trying to say right now. And that's probably a bigger issue with it, there hasn't really been anything to serve as a tone-setter. I guess it's supposed to be a mystery story? Find out what happened with the witch girl and the aircraft? But there's not really enough information given to us to feel like that's a mystery and it feels more like an "obstacle" for Snout and witch to overcome. Are we supposed to actually care about Dominic Deegan here? The newspaper excerpts should suggest that but they might just be meant as exposition to give us a timeframe as to how much time has passed from DD. So far I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to care about in this story.

Mookie's fine. His comic is bad and unintentionally funny as a result. As far as I'm concerned he's provided us with hours of free entertainment by making a bad comic so it's fine if someone gives him some money for it.

Oh hey, the return of another narrative failing that was a staple of the original DD: introducing tension in a page and diffusing it immediately.

He redrew the same panel four times, which is actually not a bad thing. They were lazy, low-effort panels but it wasn't a copy/paste job.

The real issue is that Snout's hand moves from the bottom of the page to the side of the page depending on which angle you view him at.

Yeah, I wasn't saying that he copy-pasted that panel. Just that four of the panels are the same panel. Bad design rather than technique.

Also just want to point out, according to what he's found here, apparently ink magic is not an unknown thing. Maybe even not rare. And yet the woman he's looking for is just "THE Ink Witch," as if it's her unique power.

I mean I guess she might have a name she's not telling him or something. But knowing Mookie...

Even if it is a name that they are trying to withhold from Snout for whatever reason their means of doing so necessitate that he doesn't fall for their dumbshit lie, which bad writing in itself.

Ohhh right. Tree sap fixed the easily guessed stains. This strengthens the spell.

No, this is the berries, Snout was looking for two things. But I don't blame you for forgetting. I'm sure we'll either never see the tree again because the sap won't be necessary, or another, more powerful character, will effortlessly collect the sap from it.

I should not speak before the actual resolution happens, but I guess at least he he's making Snout confront the bad thing rather than having a deus ex machina solve it instantly for him.

watch the next page being the spell using its new power to get the page effortlessly

Ok, wait. He needed this glue to somehow fix the page, but so far as we can tell, it didn't magically fix the page. It's literally just holding the scraps of the interior of the page together. Scraps that were already there, and have been there the whole time. It seemed like this glue was somehow going to magically fill in the missing pieces, but no, it's just regular loving glue.

The pieces were there the whole time. All he had to do was just flatten the page out and move them into place to read it. The glue was pointless. The tree was pointless. Everything is pointless.

Everything is pointless.

I think most of the words in the middle were partially missing but they were all pretty easy to discern even in their mangled state so fixing them really means nothing to us. The only thing that could possibly matter for the audience here is Snout's sense of accomplishment, and if you feel like that's unearned it's because it is.

You'd think he had more pressing concerns. A half-dead woman turns up on his doorstep. His house is blown up and the woman is abducted. Thats usually where a protagonist would drop everything and follow that call to adventure.

Instead he just forgets about it and looks for more paper.

I mean he is following a call to adventure, one that took the form of a loving page telling him "yeah the INK WITCH wants me to find those papers pls help?" and one that is probably the witch herself. The fact that you don't remember it speaks volumes about how engaging that particular plot device has been.

Also I'm sure Mookie is proud of having planned two whole strips ahead. The fact that the only relevant part of the dreams was the literal text spelling out something the audience has never heard of does undercut it a bit.

You also know that the comic is meant to be read at release pace rather than all at once because this page has a flashback panel to... two pages ago.

Gonna be fun when the rest of the comic takes place in the dreamworld and the comic uses this as an excuse to run over the dialoguelessness of the comic for the rest of the thing. Like even if he still can't hear because he doesn't know how that works in a dreamworld he will probably just have actual in-universe speech bubbles.

He's writing his webcomic like it's a saturday morning cartoon, but with sex and gore. It's trying to appeal to people that liked that aesthetic, and want it replicated in more mature stories, without realising that maturity is reflected not only in content but also in form.

Being scared of the unknown is normal even if your daily routine is living in a scary, dangerous place. That's a silly complaint to have. A more real problem is that we don't really know what that routine is for Snout, with things like Snout not giving a gently caress about his house being blown up not making much sense. That would have certainly been a better point to follow the call to adventure; the witch could have stayed with him and been the one to guide him to the pages using ink telepathy or some poo poo then when he has everything his house gets blown up, at which point he might as well travel around.

It would have made a lot more sense to portray Snout as being cowardly if he hadn't so willingly gone out of his way to find those pages, including going to places in the Wild Edge he had seemingly never gone to before and was unfamiliar with. Dude's been braving dangers and going to new places all this time but now he's scared to leave home?

A lot of the witch's character design rested on her being some form of near-dead/exhausted, with her eyes obscured and a kind of scowl on her mouth. Of course that characterisation was going to collapse the moment she is shown properly and has to emote. That much was inevitable.
