actually went "augh! no!" out loud like a cartoon character. imagine being that kid and finding out you were named after a character from a poo poo webcomic.

edit:

was i picked on in middle school? hmm let me think
* Parents were both Dominic Deegan (long story)
* Wore overalls with a "DEAF" patch on them to school every day
* Had the word "∀N∩˥" instead of a mouth

It would be an ironic way to end the comic, since he's ending it because he can't figure out what to do with Snout, and getting rid of his disabilities and giving him magic powers would be the exact thing that would solve that.

Much like Dominic Deegan himself, Mookie somehow finds a way to be the star of everyone else's emotional moments in life.

When I was 13 and going to my first ever Connecticon, I did not get what made Mookie so special that he was treated like an actual celebrity by the people in charge. It's been almost 20 years since then and--

Wait, is that supposed to be him on their front page too?

Probably putting too much thought into this, but whatever. One thing I was thinking about lately with this comic and that's been low-key bugging me since Mookie's blog posts about being part of queer spaces/being some people's first webcomic exposure to trans people...

There's no real space for queer people in them. And yes, we've had queer characters, even ones who stuck around, but there are some real differences in how they're written from the straight/cis cast. Thinking about it, everything we see in terms of storylines or story beats about love and romance, whether one-sided or mutual, has been only really allowed to the straight characters. We have Dominic and Luna's romance and marriage, Dominic's parents loving each other despite Miranda's parents hating Dadgan, even the things like Jayden's whole deal all came about because of love. Arudak and Kazya, too. Am I saying they were all great stories? Um, absolutely not. But on the other hand we get...Szark having sexually-charged bordering on predatory feelings for Dominic that go away as soon as he sees Dominic throw up. Cool.

For someone who loves to be part of queer spaces and makes himself part of the community, it's just odd that there seems to be no space for that community in the stories he creates, in the world he's created. If he's such a part of that world, where is it in his inner world? It's kind of a shame, and I think it's what makes his allyship feel so disingenuous. At least, that's how I feel about it.

tldr Hey Mookie, for your next comic, maybe try writing some interesting non-straight characters or something

I think the core of it is that he is fundamentally unable to write inner life for characters that aren’t basically himself, so all LGBT characters, like almost all women in the comic, do not exist as themselves but rather as accessories for the benefit of or as objects to be saved by characters that are Mookie.

That is probably a huge part of it, yeah. Like Idiota only wants Snout because he's the main character and everyone has to revolve around this character we keep being told is a good person despite him doing very little to deserve that, but genuinely if he showed what she actually sees in him, her ~challenges page wouldn't have been such a wet fart. Can she even name three things about his personality that draws her to him that aren't "he's nice"? I sure can't.

Can he even intentionally write an interesting straight character?

He's written straight characters that made me look at my screen and go "hm. Interesting choice," and also ones that made me go "man, if someone else was writing this, I would probably enjoy what's going on here," so by some metric...

Obnoxipus

To be clear, I absolutely, genuinely, do not think that any LGBTQ rep that Mookie would add to this or future comics would be particularly good. More of a "wow so you just love talking about what a queer ally you are and how you love to be among those gays/transes/etc. but that's pretty much where it ends for you." If someone creates a whole world and, when giving life and thought to the people in that world, barely includes any representation of queer characters and includes roughly zero representation of queer love or joy or grief or like any emotion? at all?, it says a lot about how much that person really thinks about them as people or a community or part of their own world.

Really, I just had that bad feeling when thinking about his blog posts about it versus his creative output, so I mentally composed a bunch of paragraphs about it in the shower. Also my friends are probably sick of hearing me complain about Dominic Deegan by now so I just posted it here. :shobon:

That's kind of what I'm getting at, sorry if I put it badly. I forget where he lives, but given the burlesque scene and other stuff, I daresay it's not some isolated small town in flyover country where a black or East Asian person showing up in town is some kind of Event.
I mean, granted, to be fair, he could be 'forgiven' somewhat for thinking that sort of diversity is a consequence of modern globalism and urbanization and that pre-industrial societies, even large cities, were more monocultural and homogeneous. This would be, of course, very wrong, but it's not an uncommon fallacy. But, like, yeah, no other aspect of Deeganverse is anything other than "the present day with lazy Renfaire tarp draped over it' so I wouldn't even be willing to buy that as a half-excuse.

It's something I was definitely thinking while reading these most recent updates. How can someone profess to be so passionate about the world they've created while shying away from adding any sort of depth to it in details that would make it seem alive? Meat specials with extra meat and vegetable medleys. This is what his fans and patrons have been supporting him to be able to churn out. How deeply disappointing.

Mookie offered Mongrel OC's as part of his first kickstarter, which coincided with the comic's first visit to Mongreltown. The second visit coincided with the second kickstarter, but because Mookie forgot to put them in there (or because he decided during that chapter to end the comic prematurely), he had to start the anthology section of Legacy with a third visit to Mongreltown in order to show off the OC's.

So Mongreltown doesn't have any worldbuilding because it's not a real place in Mookie's story-brain. It's just a larger, slightly more elaborate Jostens backdrop.

Then why put it in there in the first place!? No one made you put your characters in Mongreltown any of these times, Mookie! It just feels like he doesn't even have fun doing this.

Hitmen for Destiny is fantastic. At first, I was a bit thrown by the art style, but the writing soon made me overlook it, and it didn't take long at all for me to be 100% on board with it and anything else the creator makes. It's a comic that manages to straddle the line between comedic and serious in what I felt and still feel is a pretty unique way.
