I guess both of the large malls in the midwest that I grew up with were built in the 70s. They didn't have the food courts until expansions were built until the late 80s. No neon for us, either. :( Both of them had theaters in them, but once the theaters eventually shut down, they reopened just outside of both malls and THOSE had lots of neon, that was early 90s.

I read more about the Gap stores, and I think that was mostly an east cost thing, so it makes sense we never saw them here in the midwest really. We all wore OshKosh B'gosh.

Good lord.

Starter jackets were big in my high school in the early 90s. Before that it was all Adidas track pants and shirts for the smokers/heshers, and pastel t-shirts with Hawaiian button downs wore open because of Miami Vice. Man the colors back then were through the roof.

I was thinking about that during any Hopper action scene. Like he should have done some time in Vietnam or something to explain how he can murder dudes and not really act like it was a big deal. He's a small town cop, it's likely he wouldn't have even fired his gun at a suspect pre stranger things events let alone shot anyone.

Fake edit: I googled after writing this and apparently he served in Vietnam so that at least explains a lot. Haven't seen the previous seasons since they aired. I suppose its some credit to the writers he wasnt going on about "my time in nam" all the damm time, I can just imagine him grabbing the AK off the Russians and going "hmm, just like the viet cong used to use".

As for the other characters it is a bit odd in the hospital they never really say like holy poo poo we just killed two people, even if they turned to goo and formed into a monster after but I supposed everything's happening so fast there's no real time to process

I thought media was overhyping people getting jumped for their Jordan's until I had a black Dolphins starter jacket in '92 and that poo poo was like a magnet for dudes trying to take it. Luckily I could run back then.

Steve is still the best character on this show. They could make a spin-off that had nothing to do with the sci-fi stuff and just have a Steve and Robin show with Dustin popping in every so often.

Reign on me.
My first thought when The Scoops Troop was sneaking around the Russian lab was “This looks like A New Hope” and then later Hooper and Co steal the soldiers uniforms to gain access to the lab but that would be a 70s reference.

I also thought the first shot of the Flayer in the hospital hallway was very The Thing (Mike’s basement) and towards the end of the season when then are hiding in a boarded up cabin from a paranormal entity with the dear head so prominently displayed was very Evil Dead (Johnathan’s Bedroom). I noticed Max has a poster on her wall as well in her final shot but I couldn’t make it out

Finished the season.

My thoughts:

- The season seemed oddly in favor of capitalism? I mean yeah there were certainly jabs toward it, but even things supporting it such as "the game wasn't rigged!"

- I really enjoyed seeing how all the characters parted ways into their own groups. Especially Steve's crew as I can imagine it was difficult to know what to even do with his character. That said, I do feel that Billy was wasted as they couldn't figure out how to not have him as the antagonist.

- Lucas's sister was extremely annoying.

- Mike was such a disrespectful rear end in a top hat. I felt no remorse for how Jim handled the situation. I would have done something similar. gently caress Mike.

- I know this season's tone was supposed to be fun. How the gently caress could some kids with teens high on ecstasy infiltrate a secret military base? They don't have any loving cameras or trip alarms?

- The base thing was just stupid. How did the Russians manage to get on AMERICAN soil in the middle of the country? ...It's stupid!

- Suzie was casted perfectly.

- The monster this season was great, and I really enjoyed the final two episodes of the battle.

- With all that said, I REALLY wish the series would end. These families, especially the Byers, have been through more than enough. I felt things were getting long in the tooth after Season 2. Reading that it is all but confirmed that there will be a 4th season makes me kind of pissed. I don't care if this is "Netflix's Game of Thrones", it needs to end. These characters have gone through enough. They could at least do a Jojo and have a new cast take over with maybe one character coming in as a mentor. I can imagine Jim working with some teens in a Soviet Russia going under hypernormalization. Now I'm mad because this won't happen.

my only thing is I have a hard time believing bumfuck Indiana would get a mall (hell an arcade) worthy of a major metropolitan area especially after its industries get gutted by the rise of japan

I mean one of the biggest malls in the country is Gurnee Mills. It was built in a town of a little over 10,000 people. Since then the town has grown to over 30,000. Now to be fair Gurnee is right by a town that was a bit less than 70,000 at the time, but as someone who grew up around the area the pull of these malls is that they get people from not only the entire county, but also all the neighboring ones. The mall isn't particularly close to any notable location, but isn't exactly too far either. I can believe such a thing could happen to Hawkins if it was surrounded by large towns and a small city 20 miles away.

The mall from my 80s childhood had a movie theater, an arcade, a giant food court, and was littered with neon. I have no idea what that dude was talking about.

Then I moved to a town with a mall built in the 70s that had an ice rink and two movie theaters and instead of a food court it was all these small cubicles in the center with like an Orange Julius and a hot dog place and other stuff where actual cooking wasn't involved. And one of those giant "simulator" things that shook around on scissor lifts.

The wife and I are only about 3 episodes into the new season but we're loving it so far. After the general disappointment that was S2, everything about S3 is improved, from the writing to the main story to the characterization. A lot of people hated that episode and while I didn't think it was set up very well, it was really the only point of S2 that wasn't a total rehash of the same exact plot beats from S1. I thought it could have been interesting if they developed that thread more from the beginning instead of suddenly dropping it to achieve nothing in terms of the narrative.

When I'm off, I just like to really let go and have fun, y'know?

Fun Shoe
Things I enjoyed about this season:
- That mayor scene where he says CAPITALISM at the exact same moment he decapitate his cigar with a mini guillotine.
- The scene between Robin and Steve in the bathroom.
- The final scene was effective, but only because of the first two seasons

Things I disliked
- The gross fetishization of capitalism and consumerism. The first point in my likes made me look for signs it was self-aware, but I didn't see any except for that.
- Communism bad
- Hey guys remember how Burger King looked in the 80s, nostalgia is cool, huh?
- Literally being an advertisement for a brand of cigarettes aimed at adolescents and teens.
- The utter lack of any character arcs in this coming of age story. I guess we're supposed to think Billy had an arc, but he literally just did a 180 at the end because El woke him up by whispering about his mom?
- Girls sure are weird, amirite/guys sure are some clueless jerks, amirite?
- How we're always told about the mystery in an omniscient way, rather than through the eyes of our protagonists figuring out what's going on.

And more but those are the main points off the top of my head. Pretty awful season.
