Him doing commentary on the ultra-widescreen is great. Sasso was one of those guys who was way too good for that show.

Eventually, Mad TV got way too involved with over-acting, recurring character skits that followed the same formula each time, and skits that "read well at the table," like SNL is now.

I hated that they had Andy Daly for like one season and just used him as the straight man character all the time.

I remember seeing a bunch of Columbine jokes in MAD. It was shocking back then but now everyone is so numb to school shootings that I don't know if anyone would notice.

MADTv was good, but there was waaaaay too much Bobby Lee. Mid 2000s SNL was so terrible that I stopped watching it.

They even had a sketch specifically calling this out if I remember correctly

Go figure that the best cast member they ever had was completely unutilized

I remember Bobby Lee telling a story about his addiction to Vicodin. The producers knew, gave him one last shot with a Connie Chung sketch. Duncan Trussell removed all the pills from his house the night before, so he had the shakes by the time they went on stage.

He ended up making GBS threads himself in front of the studio audience seconds into the sketch and got shipped off to rehab.

He got hired back after getting sober and stuck around for 6 years. If the producers paid for his rehab, they were probably trying to get their money's worth out of him.

Will Sasso continued on his Hollywood journey from MadTV and onto...Southland Tales.

For some reason. Also Bobby Lee sucks.

Southland Tales had a great cast of comedic actors, which is another piece of evidence that it wasn't a weird ambitious drama that fell flat but a weird ambitious comedy that fell flat. I love the hell out of it but it's not good at all.

Listen to 10 seconds of Bobby Lee on old Opie and Anthony show recordings and you'll instantly know he's not a well put together person. And that was after Mad TV.

Bobby Lee sucks, but he's still better than Jimmy Fallon.

Edit: It's worth remembering that MADTv is where Key and Peele got started.

I think the Spishak sketches were one of the few I genuinely still like because they're basically the Cinco sketches from Tim & Eric only minus the production values.

My mom let me read MAD starting when I was like 7-8 which seemed truly transgressive, especially in '80s rural Nebraska. I got in trouble for bringing an issue with me on the bus to school and a dumbass kid told his mom that we were looking at naked women lol. My mom just told me not to bring it outside the house anymore.

Anyway yeah it started to suck in the '90s as the original writers died or got stale and they couldn't find replacement talent. I'm assuming at this point it was existing solely as a money laundering scheme.

I think it was one of those things that was cool whenever you started reading it, but dumb a few years later. The jokes were always recycled, just with a dollop of seasoning with whatever/whoever was in the news at the moment.

I found a W/L for the animated Spy Vs. Spy bits. The final count was

Black Spy: 53 victories
White Spy: 51 victories
Gray Spy: 1 victory
Draws: 2

Black Spy eked our two more wins than White Spy in animated shorts

I'm having trouble finding reliable sources for the comics. Best I can find is a Reddit thread from 2010 that says White got more wins because he was easier to draw.

Porpoise noise continues.
The best part of MadTV is that so many of them worked on Clone High. I'll laugh at the Vancome Lady every time, though.

Also, Debra Wilson used to do a sketch about a "ghetto" girl (since it was the 90s, it was trendy to call everything ghetto) and one time she tries out to be a cheerleader and she meets a girl and the girl's like "oh, I'm Navajo" and Debra Wilson goes "YEAH, I'M NOT A HO EITHER" and I don't know, it makes me laugh when I think about it.

The Nib is one of the last successful outlets for this style of contemporary humor comics and it's currently in a funding crisis and running largely off of donations. All the people rallying and try to bring back a magazine they haven't read in decades just because they have fuzzy childhood memories should at the very least be throwing some money at an actually good and relevant one that deserves to keep going.

I remember that this was reprinted in one of the first super specials I bought as a kid in 1986 or 1987, and I thought it was hilarious because it was just so bizarre. It was originally published in issue #95 back in 1965. I have a beat up copy of that issue and meant to bring it in to work with me today so I could scan it, but I forgot. These blurry pics I found online will have to suffice for now.

Aries Spears was such a funny dude. There's one particular sketch that was parodying Being John Malkovich, only it was Aries Spears doing his Being James Brown. To this day, my dad can't watch that sketch without laughing until there are tears in his eyes.
