I was the Moose voter so let me talk about Moose. Moose was a highly touted prospect, and admittedly he didn't exactly live up to that. In his first four seasons he put up an OPS+ of 84, and was 2.7 runs below average. BUT, at the end of 2014, he had some big moments. He murdered the Angel's in game 1 of the ALDS in dramatic fashion when he cranked the game winning homer in extras of game 1. And he made this very silly catch against the O's in the ALCS. He followed those fun moments up with a 2015 campaign that was legitimately good. Finally putting poo poo together and becoming an All-Star. Lorenzo Cain was easily the best player on the 2015 Royals, but Moose was definitely second best. Plus I mean, he's kind of doofy looking. And him getting hosed on the free agent market, but re-emerging this year as an all-star again is very endearing imo. Moose and Hosmer will of course always be linked in the collective Royals memory. Both highly regarded prospects. Neither really accomplished the individual success I think people expected. But flags fly forever and that is most important for a team sport. And I think Moose was ultimately the better one of the two. Plus, finally, he currently holds the franchise homerun record. Edit: also I can't believe put Moose ahead of Cain. That was a mistake due to the post-all star high Haha. I deffo like Cain better. But, it's whatever. alpha_destroy fucked around with this message at 05:41 on Aug 20, 2019 |

You know, if there's one thing that organizing these favorite/unfavorite lists has taught me, it's that it's thousands of times easier to write about players when you've been following them at least a little. Trying to think of nice things to say about a player that I've literally never even seen play before is quite a task.

I decided to give myself a break because 1) things were falling apart at work and 2) I wanted to prepare a bunch of these little profiles all at once in advance so I could post them after work without having to think about it. #19 Most Loved - 10 points Buster Posey Team: San Francisco Giants Debut: September 11, 2009 https://twitter.com/BusterPosey/status/1165298720792952832 What's to love? Buster Posey is as likable as he is good. I noticed once upon a time that he was good at hugs, and now someone on YouTube has also made that observation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7RExbZMAds Alex Pavlovic thinks he's Hall of Fame-bound and so do I. He's consistent in performance and in recognition, getting Silver Sluggers and All-Star spots damned near every year, and (if I recall correctly) he's caught like four or five no-hitters. Marcus Semien Team: Oakland Athletics Debut: September 4, 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPrL9ZhQpOc What's to love? He keeps adjusting his approach, and he keeps getting better every year. After Ron Washington imbued him with the shortstop essence that kept him from regressing to his 2015 self, Semien has developed a bat as well. The Athletic can tell you everything you need to know to love him as much as the one person who voted for him does, if you have a subscription (which you should). If you don't, I'll quote the salient points. quote:Semien’s fielding percentage of .980 is his best as A’s shortstop and better than the league’s fielding percentage at shortstop (.970). He only has 10 errors so far this season — a long cry from his first season as the A’s starter when he made 35 errors and fielded 94.7 percent of his opportunities. https://twitter.com/Athletics/status/1156414345632288768 quote:Semien is on pace for career highs in batting average (.273), home runs (22), RBI (61) and extra-base hits (60). Also, he’s on pace for his best OPS ever. His .841 on-base percentage plus slugging is second on the A’s and 59th in the majors. He also switched to a lighter bat and then this happened. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzBNx88oplA quote:19. Buster Posey, Marcus Semien

One of my favorite things about following a player is when/if they finally click on whatever it is that used to be their big downfall. Watching, for example, Miguel Sano actually take a ball is a thing of beauty that I never thought I'd witness. He's recognizing better pitches to swing at, getting deeper into counts, and making better contact. What used to be nerve-wracking is now exciting.

I was in the middle of describing one of the #19-ers as a brown-skinned Adonis when I realized they're ALL brown-skinned Adonises in one way or another. #18 Most Loved - 11 points Andrew McCutchen Team: Philadelphia Phillies Debut: June 4, 2009 What's to love? Frankly, I am stunned that Cutch hasn't higher on the list. Everyone loves him, and it's easy to see why. He's fun, funny, and handsome. https://twitter.com/Phillies/status/1155252005708926976 As far as playing goes, his time with the Phillies (aside from '70s night) has been less than impressive. He's out for the season recovering from extensive knee surgery. Hopefully he'll be okay in 2020? Every time a player over 30 gets injured, I worry a thousand times harder than usual. He can still dance though! https://twitter.com/TheCUTCH22/status/1147565113551073281 Anyway, in closing, he wrote what is still the best Players Tribune article ever, about how hard it is for disadvantaged kids to get into baseball. CC Sabathia Team: New York Yankees Debut: April 8, 2001 What's to love? Especially now that Bartolo is (ostensibly) gone, CC Sabathia is everyone's favorite uncle. He joined the 3,000 strikeout club earlier in the season, after announcing his retirement. We'll miss him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE9Dqfbc3CU He is also pro-batflipping. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2_8u_b_-B0 I tried to get a specific quote but the whole thing is a quote. Also, Randal Grichuk is a douche. His candidness about his ongoing struggles with alcoholism are also humanizing. He just seems like a down to earth, normal guy who happens to have a cannon. Francisco Lindor Team: Cleveland Indians Debut: June 14, 2015 https://twitter.com/Lindor12BC/status/1165005537370673153 What's to love? He is always, always, always, always smiling, and not in a weird goody two shoes way like Brandon Nimmo. I compared him to Nimmo in 2017 too, but until MLB gets more players who are obsessed with smiling, that comparison will have to do. He is also a consistent player who has made the All-Star team every year since 2016. https://twitter.com/dan_bernstein_/status/1159666922859814913 He also does things like adjusting Oliver Pérez's socks & interviewing interviewers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gN74LzyIQCI Ozzie Albies Team: Atlanta Braves Debut: August 1, 2017 What's to love? Ozzie Albies is one half of the most adorable bromance in the NL East, and I say this as someone whose favorite team has Pete Alonso & Dom Smith/Jeff McNeil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7NpgDVd82k As much as I hate the Braves for introducing John Rocker to my life, I hate them even more for making Albies a borderline unethical extension offer. Ozzie Albies is a loving amazing player, one of the best second basemen in the NL at least, and they unabashedly cheated him. Of course, he did it for a likable reason. https://twitter.com/mlbbowman/status/1116446247135653896 Still. quote:18. Andrew McCutchen, CC Sabathia, Francisco Lindor, Ozzie Albies

Here's a little bit more about CC, since I voted him my #1. Despite growing up in southern California he's an adamant lover of deep dish pizza, and until recently absolutely hated New York thin crust. In 2008, even though he was set to become a free agent at the end of the year, he still volunteered to pitch on 3 days rest for 3 consecutive games to try and get the Brewers into the playoffs. The last of those was a complete game, and over the three games he gave up a total of two earned runs. Also in 2008 he started the Pitcch In Foundation to provide athletic and school supplies for inner city children. His favorite type of donut is maple. He's the host (along with broadcaster Ryan Ruocco) of the R2C2 podcast, which is mostly just them talking about Star Wars and Game of Thrones. Last week he got thrown out of a game despite not being on the active roster. And whenever he gets himself out of a jam to end an inning, he has a habit of screaming gibberish to himself. This can sometimes be misconstrued and lead to funny t-shirts.
