My aunt and uncle adopted two kids from Russia (they were very good parents to outside appearances and my cousins are doing really well), and the impression I had was that they had to go through a lot of vetting of one sort or another both times. I obviously got thst very very wrong. Maybe it was them overestimating the chances of being rejected.

Yeah, my almost sister-in-law and her husband had to travel to Russia 3 times before they brought back 3 sibs (2 girls and 1 boy). The oldest girl positively thrived, and the middle kid (girl) is a little withdrawn socially, but is knocking it out of the park academically. The youngest, a boy, was 5 when they brought him over and had some behavioral problems. But with patience and kindness (with a dash of therapy) he's actually settled down. While maybe not the best student, he's doing perfectly fine at school and at home.

According to them they felt like they were under a microscope the entire time (this was about 10 years ago). But they also researched agencies and tried to pick the most reputable one they could find.

They couldn't love these kids more if they were actual flesh and blood and they're so proud of all of them. The kids feel the same.

It's like verbal tap-dancing. They razzle-dazzle you with the footwork so you don't notice the inherent flaws in their arguments.

Whoa there pardner.

I’m pretty sure Beachcomber was referring to the stories from the Rejected Parents, not the posts of goons in these here parts.

Telling your kid their feelings aren't valid and then going out of your way to roast them in front of complete strangers online for your own amusement, I can't imagine why you would have such an investment in immersing yourself in parental misery porn online so you can feel better about yourself by comparison.

How the gently caress are you getting that read

Oh, wait. I missed the username.

Unless you count going to see Peter Schickele with my family, but that was more of a recital.

I’m kind of jealous. I would have loved to see a performance of Sneaky Pete and the Wolf.

When my ES Deklynne was 5, we were at a family gathering, and my sister suggested that we let all the kids play with crayons while the adults socialized. Innocent enough, I thought.

A half hour later, ES runs up to me and hands me a picture that he's drawn. It's a crude drawing of two persons, one peach colored and the other blue.

"Look, mommy, I drew you and Sonic!"

The words were like a dagger in my heart. It had been in the news all week. Sega had declared bankruptcy. And now, my ES was associating me with their mascot.

The message was obvious. "Mother, I see you as a failure. You will never be successful. Everything you do will fall to pieces. Shenmue is overrated."

The other adults in the room pretended not to notice this mortifying insult, out of politeness, but they all grew awkward and quiet. My ES looked at me, feigning confusion as my hot tears hit the paper.

I'll never forget the sinister look in his eyes as he said, "What's wrong, mommy? Don't you like Sonic?"

When ES ignores my texts and calls, when he sends back my gifts, I think back to that day. I should have known then that his heart was wicked. I should have had the strength to stand up for myself against his abusive, gaslighting behavior.

I know better now. I understand my worth. It's hard but I get better every day.

Thanks for listening, everyone. This message board has been such a good support system. Anyway, it's lent, so I gotta go fast.

I have a vague memory of a post from I think this thread, about an estranged mother defending her husbands sexual abuse of their children by saying something like back in the day parents could kill their children with little to no repercussions so really they should be grateful they were only molested!!! Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Oh, yeah. I remember that one. It was in the middle of a longish screed, so it jumped out as small landmine.

I want to say it was the crazy woman who lived alone and complained about her adopted daughter a lot. And really, really hung on to the "adopted" factor and that everything wrong was because of her not-really-my-daughter's genetics and had absolutely nothing to do with her parenting.

I think sometimes personality disorders are a lot like that nail. The personality disorder in their brain prevents them from seeing the personality disorder in their brain.

In college I majored in psych (and I'm sure I heard this from someone else) I used to refer to that as "How can I fix the head I got with the head I got" (also see "If I have a broken hammer I can't use that same hammer to fix itself.")

Way I hear it is people get into psych either because they want to fix their own brainworms or they want to learn how to manipulate people, possible with some overlap

That was it for me. Not even remotely related to my career, but I was already on that track before I finished up.
