Why the heck does a multi-million dollar movie use the same Bear Noise that SyFi used in their C-level flick about a radioactive grizzly bear? Or every single show ever that uses the Semi Truck Honking and Passing By noise when the idiot protagonist almost swerves into the wrong lane? Unless someone does something, I fear that for the next seven or so decades I'm alive (being an optimist here) I will be exposed to That Bear Noise or the lesser known Crocodile Noise because someone is too lazy to poke a bear or crocodile and record the noise it makes, so they'll just default to the decades old one Come on now, its lazy and dumb!

I think when you grew up gaming in the 90's you inadvertently created a specialty compartilized part of your brain dedicated to cataloguing and recognizing stock sound effects. Having dedicated sound designers back then was rare and unless you were huge budget developers like Westwood who could Foley loving flamethrowers and cars exploding you either created compressed digital effects, crap you smashed together with bad mics with your small staff, or mined stock sound effect libraries. So the sound of kids laughing in Baldur's Gate, doors opening in Doom, doors creaking in Daggerfall, guns shooting in Wolf 3D, dragons roaring in Might & Magic 6, you would hear that poo poo FIVE TRILLION GOSH DARNED times through the course of the game with no variation, so they would be burned into the sound center of your brain for all eternity. Almost every movie I watch has me recognizing stock sound effects. A lot of the libraries are straight up ancient, and harried sound techs who have a deadline will just squeeze volume reduced versions of these effects into scenes to fill them out when they can't be bothered to create unique samples. I have to say that this poo poo has outright ruined scenes for me. I'm probably anal retentive of poo poo but few things smash the delicate illusion of film more than canned bullshit because it just immediately allows you to see the seams. Anyway that's why the sound of Javert crunching when he kills himself in the newer Les Mis is one of the worst movies scenes of all times thank you for listening I drank too much coffee today.

I don't know why but I guess some sound designer in Japan in the early 2000s decided these goofy rear end Nickelodeon Gak sound effects were appropriate to put in survival horror games. Some of the worst offenders I can think of are The Ring: Terror's Realm and D2 on Dreamcast, which made copious use of them. I think Silent Hill 4 might have even used them - I know it definitely made some weird sound effect choices like generic burp sounds when hitting some enemies and the weird long-tongued dogs that roared like jaguars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1XlVjk4qNA

Lol yes, the nurses in SH4 burped, if you knocked them down on stairs they would continuously burp with each stair their inert model would slide down.

Is there anything stopping someone making a low budget number from grabbing some sound equipment and just doing this poo poo themselves? Union rules maybe? Because while I don't give a poo poo about stock sounds in stuff I'm watching, I'd feel hacky using it in something I'm making

There's a stock monster sound that appears at the end of The Babadook that singlehandedly ruined the movie for me. Took an unsettling and creepy horror film right into B movie territory.
