Can anyone reference a film or show that uses appropriate sound design for whats happening on screen? Right now the only one I can think of is the accurate gun shots in Heat, but I'm probably overlooking plenty others because realistic sounds by their very nature don't make themselves obvious

I've heard the door noise from og Doom on a bunch of stuff, which always seemed especially weird to me, because it sounds a lot like the pinky demon scream. In doom this seemed on purpose, to make it menacing and keep you guessing, but on a show about like, some vets taking a vial out of a locked box, there suddenly being a demon! Maybe! Seems really loving jarring. It doesn't arguably fit this thread though because I love it.

The sound of the monster cubes being shot from the icon of sin is in about 75% of all scifi/action movies since the mid-90s. Flamethrowers/futuristic weapons/all kinds of other bullshit make that sound apparently. Only movies where this doesn't get used are AAA movies that do all their own sound effects.

To be fair, that's a .44 magnum pistol Schwarzenegger's firing. Though it does remind me of an episode of Airwolf where a couple of baddies are chasing Stringfellow Hawke with Walther PPKs. The guns make a fairly standard small pistol noise, until Hawke disarms a baddie and suddenly the PPK sounds like the .45 Hawke normally carries. No only is he a skilled pilot, he can make a PPK chamber and fire .45ACP. No end to the man's talents.

You're safe here.

quote:

The Universal Telephone Ring

nother of the most often heard sound effects - especially in TV shows produced at Universal Studios during the '70s and '80s - is the sound of a telephone ringing.

This sound effect was especially made famous by opening every episode of "The Rockford Files," heard just before Jim Rockford's answering machine automatically picked up the phone.

Sound Designer Ben Burtt, in an interview with Bantha Tracks Newsletter in August of 1982, called Universal's telephone one of his least favorite sound effects. "No matter where the scene is, an office, an outside payphone, or deep in a cave - all Universal telephones will ring with the same 'tittle-little-little-ling.' I don't like it because it's so artificial."

Nevertheless, it was used endlessly on television (in such TV shows as "Leave it to Beaver," "The Six Million Dollar Man," "The Bionic Woman," "McCloud," "Quincy," "The A-Team" and "Magnum P.I.") and in many films as well (including "The Sting," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Tootsie," "Ghostbusters" and "WarGames").

Sound Editor Mark Mangini thinks it should be retired, especially since most copies of the sound have a "wow" distortion in them (occurring during the transfer of the sound when the speed of the recording was wobbling) - which is most obvious during the end reverberation. Regardless of this, Mangini most recently used the infamous phone ring in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” – a film which takes place in the '70s, when the sound effect was heard on television most often.

StudlyCaps posted:

STALKER was also a poo poo show. They made a big deal about recording all the sounds for the guns in real life and then later on they replace them all with stock noises.

It really annoys me. Like, the idea is that you modify them to make them sound different. Slow them down and add some reverb, gently caress, do something, anything!
