This thread is great, thanks. I read the first few Flashman books a few years ago, and I learned quickly that, like Chekhov’s gun, if a pretty piece appears in chapter 1 Flashy is going to try and tumble her by chapter 5 (and probably during chapter 1). He is just so awful in every way, but so self aware that the reader gets sucked in by his charm.
drat this really makes me want to read more about the history of Britain’s imperialism.
John Darwin’s “Unfinished Empire” is quite good. He makes the argument that ‘imperialism’ isn’t all that useful of a term because it is so broad and general. The British colonization of Australia was completely different in practice and type from what happened in India (or even New Zealand) and what happened in Canada, even before the AWI, was quite different from what was happening in the 13 colonies. The later 19th century adventures in Africa and south/east Asia (Burma, Malaya, China) were very different not just from each other, but also from earlier colonies dominated by white settlers. It’s concise in a good way about the break-up of the empire too-I hadn’t at all realized that after the debt and destruction of WW2 raw materials from the empire were one of Britain’s only good ways of earning hard American dollars, and they were loathe to give it up for that reason even if they could read the writing on the wall. For trade and stuff, and especially India-the nexus of world trade for a very long time- “A Splendid Exchange” by William Bernstein is very good and excellent world history generally.
