Also the completed LNs just for the main series are something like 9300 pages in 33 volumes so be prepared to sink some time into it if you get hooked.

This was the series that really tested my commitment to binging without breathers between books. Worth it though.

Shockingly good. One of the few LNs that reads like a regular good fantasy series.

Not that you even have to interact with j-novel directly since they sell on multiple platforms

yeah j novel sells drm free epubs that I can easily put on whatever peripherals I want, and even drm free manga which is something I’ve never seen anywhere else. as far as I’m concerned they’re top of the line for customer friendliness

There is a reason why, even though one can just literally :filez: anything J-Novel club because they don't do DRM, I went out of my way to maintain a premium account and buy every series I read from them. They also have a pretty handy dashboard on the account page that highlights anything you have downloaded before if it has since been updated to a newer version, and will point out if a new volume is available/streaming in a series you are collecting. A premium sub comes with a discount if you buy coins, and also just flat out gives you 799 every month (enough to buy one LN volume). Its like $150/year, but you will effectively get refunded $95 of it back in store credits over the 12 month period.

Last time I looked at J-Novels, they had 3 subscription services that separately covered different portions of ongoing works so you needed all 3 to read from start to current but they also didn't cover anything that they compiled into a volume at which point it might be removed from the archive subscription. Then you also had to buy everything in converted funny money tokens. They're far from the worst in this space but that's because the bar is so horribly low.

yes, that’s because you are expected to buy volumes individually. this is how bookstores work.

They just changed their subs though and I'm not sure what I'm going to change to since I realistically do most of my reading through prepubs.

It's not how the subscriptions worked either. The main difference between the tiers were included monthly currency and discounts on buying more currency. No subscription tier as far as I know allowed you to read a series from start to finish for "free" unless it was one of the monthly catchups.

Well until a week ago where they got rid of catchups and changed their subscriptions to include tiers that add access to the "readers library"

I think Jnovel requiring fake currency is how they're getting around all the payment processor crackdowns, since that way they can just say 'well we're not actually using your payment service to sell 'objectionable' content, just these funny tokens'. Other places like DLsite are doing the same thing.

From a goofy dumb fanservice isekai suddenly swerving into "the protagonist wants to buy a sex slave, and her friends try to convince her not to but not for the reasons you'd think".

It even had an end-of-page "Stop. We need to have a talk", which made me think they were going to be sane people and say "Slavery is wrong and we don't condone that around here" but nope. :negative:

Not sure if it was an isekai, but there was a fantasy series from some seasons ago where the MC knight joins a powerful witch on their travels. I know it's vague as hell and a big criticism was that they initially hated each other, but started getting along more but it was all off-screened and people in the know said that the anime just skipped DOZENS of chapters and even whole volumes worth of stuff.

Was it The Witch and the Mercenary? Because that has been honestly pretty good imo, but I'm not a LN reader. The mercenary is _kinda_ isekaied I guess? Both of them end up on another continent beating the ever loving piss out of things (and lovely people!)

Typed that into Google and got Grimoire of Zero and Dawn of the Witch which I think might've been it, but I'll keep that one in mind as well. Anime was apparently super rushed and people highly rec'd the manga so I'll look around. Thanks.

Seconding that The Witch and the Mercenary is good. Novel Updates has the story, and Kodansha has the manga. The protagonist has a very specific code of ethics as a mercenary that drives the story, and he and the witch very early on migrate from a continent where magic is rare to one where it's an everyday fact of life and he has to hide his inability to use it.
