He and Goldberg wrote it, but apparently it went through 3-4 script doctor phases as the director/producer/star merry go round went round and round in the 4 years between writing and principal photography.

They were also behind Futureman, which is basically a comic book adaptation even though there's no direct source material. They've got a pretty good thing going on with their four shows.

Makes me never want to go back and read Preacher again. The comic is even worse than regular terrible because deep down Ennis is a pretty talented writer, and so it's filled with intriguing mysteries and storylines and characters but everything is always resolved in the most unfunny, juvenile way possible. If the whole thing was complete poo poo you'd be able to ignore it, but the utter waste of potential really pushes it to a whole new level of "terrible comic".

one of my favourite shows. i hate superhero stuff usually but this knocked me out last year. i love how it's woke af but doesn't hit you over the head with it. the gf is a big fan too, she hates comic book stuff more than me usually too. cannot wait for the second season.

I think Black Noir will wind up as comic relief forever. Although they did hire an actual actor to play him, so maybe they do have a plan for him to do something.

Not surprised to look up Providence and find out it's part of Alan Moore's Neonomicon mini-series. The previous two books were super gross in ways that made my skin crawl, so thanks for the heads up to never ever read Providence!

I was gonna rewatch but I realized that a Best of Homelander compilation would give me what I'm there for. As someone who's never read the comics, I never read Homelander as a fascist. Maybe he makes use of similar imagery, but he's a sociopath plan and simple. There's no evidence he has any political agenda, he just likes power, and is willing to say whatever it takes for him to get it. If suddenly Evangelical-chic wasn't working for him, he'd change to arch-leftist in presentation immediately to stay at the top, if that's what was required.

They don't care about the politics of fascism, or any other political or ethical idea, the only thing they care about is to be on top - and to do so the ones leading the movement say whatever their followers want to hear, creating an enemy they can rally against, rallying the people around a religious zeal and so on. Mussoliniwas famous in his stark antitheological stances (he was, literally, a member of the socialist party) and only a few years later he was saying that God had chosen him, cause that's what the people wanted to hear. Of course Homelander cares less about the people, cause he doesn't really need their support - he just need to stay on top at Vaughn. And by the end of the show, not even that...so he does start as a fascist tool, and then his psychopathy emerges and takes over more and more until he is just a loner doing whatever he wants at the end. Homelander doesn't really give a poo poo about power in the political sense, though. He doesn't particularly care about controlling what other people do or don't do, as long as he gets to do whatever he wants on a personal level. Calling him a fascist tool is absolutely accurate, though. He does work for and with fascists because he judges it the best way to get what he wants, even though he's not personally invested in the ideology. Then as you note he becomes less and less interested in Vought's agenda as he realizes that it's largely superfluous to him.
