As a nation we're just going to have to come to grips with the fact that Seth Rogen makes good comic book adaptions.

Did he write/direct The Green Hornet?

He and Goldberg wrote it, but apparently it went through 3-4 script doctor phases as the director/producer/star merry go round went round and round in the 4 years between writing and principal photography.

They were also behind Futureman, which is basically a comic book adaptation even though there's no direct source material.

They've got a pretty good thing going on with their four shows.

It cannot be overstated how bad the comic is. I bought the first volume after the show because usually I don't hate stuff as much as many people online but woof, it's real bad. Makes me never want to go back and read Preacher again.

The comic is even worse than regular terrible because deep down Ennis is a pretty talented writer, and so it's filled with intriguing mysteries and storylines and characters but everything is always resolved in the most unfunny, juvenile way possible. If the whole thing was complete poo poo you'd be able to ignore it, but the utter waste of potential really pushes it to a whole new level of "terrible comic".

one of my favourite shows. i hate superhero stuff usually but this knocked me out last year. i love how it's woke af but doesn't hit you over the head with it. the gf is a big fan too, she hates comic book stuff more than me usually too.

cannot wait for the second season.

Crossed is what happens when someone does the big bad wrong of telling Ennis to ~just be himself~.

It's like with Red Rover Charlie - he just HAS to make the little kid lick the dogshit from the scrapyard dog's rear end.

Burning questions for next season:
-A Trains fate, we know he survives but he's gotta be a dead man walking regardless.
-Does Deep hit rock bottom or can he get more pathetic?
-Will Black Noir play out like in the comics or will it be some different twist?

I read once that Crossed the result of a contest between Ennis and Warren Ellis to write the most hosed up things they could think of, and Blackgas was Ellis's effort.

I think Black Noir will wind up as comic relief forever.

Although they did hire an actual actor to play him, so maybe they do have a plan for him to do something.

There's still no good explanation for why Homelander had sex with Butcher's wife, it's not in his character. So I think that was Black Noir impersonating Homelander like in the comics..

Homelander completely no-sells it if that's their plan. He doesn't protest at all about it.

Yeah, from Ellis has said they were at a convention on some random Welsh island, got drunk in the hotel bar and missed the last ferry back. So they went back, got drunker and the loser had to pay back the winner's tab.

I'm guessing they're talking about the discussion of Black Noir's story arc as it is in the comics. If so it seems pointless to spoil at this time as I don't see how the tv show can even end up at the same conclusion. If it's about things from the TV show like Homelander's son? Well that was revealed about 8 months ago, if they are referring to that we might as well be spoilering plot points from Batman starring Adam West.

Yeah at this point its pretty clear they are diverging from the comics (good) so its all conjecture at this point.

If it matches the comic storyline then Homelander genuinely thinks he's the one who did it.

I was gonna rewatch but I realized that a Best of Homelander compilation would give me what I'm there for.

That scene where he pulls the shooter's guts out then opens up on maeve reminds me a little of this scene from Superman 2 where Zod is attacking the white house and grabs an M-16 and finds it a delightful plaything even though he's got laser eyes.

As someone who's never read the comics, I never read Homelander as a fascist. Maybe he makes use of similar imagery, but he's a sociopath plan and simple. There's no evidence he has any political agenda, he just likes power, and is willing to say whatever it takes for him to get it. If suddenly Evangelical-chic wasn't working for him, he'd change to arch-leftist in presentation immediately to stay at the top, if that's what was required.

He doesn't care about any sort of societal project that isn't centered around letting him him get away with whatever he wants. I know you could argue that that's an underlying goal of fascism, but Homelander is so hyperindividual that political, economic, and social matters just doesn't concern him; all that matters is what he, personally, is allowed to do.

That is the textbook definition of ur-fascism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definitions_of_fascism#Umberto_Eco. It is also the type of fascism the alt-right is all about. They don't care about the politics of fascism, or any other political or ethical idea, the only thing they care about is to be on top - and to do so the ones leading the movement say whatever their followers want to hear, creating an enemy they can rally against, rallying the people around a religious zeal and so on.

Mussoliniwas famous in his stark antitheological stances (he was, literally, a member of the socialist party) and only a few years later he was saying that God had chosen him, cause that's what the people wanted to hear.

Of course Homelander cares less about the people, cause he doesn't really need their support - he just need to stay on top at Vaughn. And by the end of the show, not even that...so he does start as a fascist tool, and then his psychopathy emerges and takes over more and more until he is just a loner doing whatever he wants at the end.

Edit: this discussion was so common awhile ago that someone bought this smile: :umberto:

Homelander doesn't really give a poo poo about power in the political sense, though. He doesn't particularly care about controlling what other people do or don't do, as long as he gets to do whatever he wants on a personal level.

Calling him a fascist tool is absolutely accurate, though. He does work for and with fascists because he judges it the best way to get what he wants, even though he's not personally invested in the ideology. Then as you note he becomes less and less interested in Vought's agenda as he realizes that it's largely superfluous to him.
