the people who are vulnerable to it spend a lot of time trying to figure out exactly what is the best thing to do. not necessarily anal people, but anxious about their own worth, correctness, and ethicalness. some are compulsive do-gooders. it was essentially a troll laser-targeted on people like that, to give them the unwanted thought that actually all of their careful calculations about Effective Altruism and what-all might not matter at all, and that some unseen god had turned their attention on them and was displeased with their actions. they reacted to this fear in a very human way. and yes, very up their own rear end. read https://reducing-suffering.org/ for a sad laugh or two.
