I highly doubt two planes doing a coordinated strike is independent events with the same probability as two single plane strikes, but I have no idea what they were basing their estimates on, so I dunno if its a small brain or a galaxy brain take.

Yes, I saw that, but we aren't told what the unnamed underling is basing any of this on. (Obviously "1.0" is bunk, but let's say he meant high 90s)

If it's a small target you're sending two planes with two bombs, then it's two independent events with probability dependent on CEP. And in our case two .5 gives .75 of at least one hit.

But if the limiting factor is bomb load? Dora Farms were a complex they thought saddam might be, right? So say one plane is capable of destroying half the complex, two planes should be able to destroy all of it, giving this planner his "sure bet".

Alternatively, (and now we might be entering "spherical cow" territory a bit), assume hostile air defence have a 50% chance of detecting your plane, but is only able to engage one target at a time. Then one plane has a 50% chance of getting through, two planes guarantees it.

However, for the Delta Force soldiers who were assigned to Task Force Ranger, their safety rules were a bit different, Hooten explained.

“So, we clear our weapons, we drop the hammer, and once you drop the hammer on the weapon, it won’t go on safe. That way I know if I pick a weapon up in the middle of the night, and I try to manipulate the safety on it, if it goes on safe I’m not quite sure whether it’s loaded or not. But if it won’t go on safe, I know that gun’s clear.

But when he tried to explain this to the Ranger captain, “he didn’t understand that,” Hooten said. “I’m not a big fan of that guy, but it was not a big deal. I just said ‘hey, I got it on safe. I’ve got my gun, you’ve got your gun. You worry about yours, I’ll worry about mine.’

"Reduced heat transfer. Composite case insulates the chamber and bolt face from heat transfer, reducing wear and tear on weapon system."

Isn't reduced heat transfer undesirable?

No, it is desirable. Think about where that heat is (inside the case, exploding) and where it wants to go (any metal part around it, heating it up). Insulating that and chucking the case thus makes sure less heat gets transferred to the gun.

This is in fact one of the major drawbacks of caseless, you get a major increase in heat by not insulating, and not tossing hot cases out of the gun.

If you had asked me before the war in Ukraine, I would have argued that maybe they had a point; like maybe having a fleet of aircraft that need 20 hours of maintenance for every five minutes flown to the point they can't be moved before a hurricane hits is a bad thing, actually.

But now the Ukrainians have gone and shown the world that actually yes, having a bunch of fancy toys actually does make a difference.

Okay but the gulf war did that though, that was the one where "huh, technology do actually matter" got in it's victory lap after vietnam had sort of sown doubt.

Iirc french army is limiting recoilless rifle (carl g?) shots in peacetime to 3 total per person, due to blast damage.
