The future is a dangerous place. The march of technology ever forward was supposed to make everybody safer, happier, and healthier, and while it achieved this in some cases, in most it engendered a hunger for resources and living space for populations unconstrained by the ravages of disease. Humanity spread across the stars. They found they were not alone, strange species greeting them as they marched outwards from their home. What unity humanity had leaving Earth was shattered by contact, as reactions to it ranged from loving to genocidal. Humanity fractured and splintered. The material needs of Humanity’s home were soon finding themselves met, at the expensive of those on the outer rims. Technology that was once freely available became locked down, and soon the stellar landscape was turned into a roiling boil of haves and have nots, xeno haters, the religious, plucky colonisers, rebels and revolutionaries, and more. What else came out of the woodwork were bandits, pirates, marauders and reavers. Life became that much more difficult on the outer reaches of human society as combat became another part of survival. Aliens and their strange ways were also a source of friction, and soon the what the outer rim needed most were warriors.

You are one of those warriors. Secured by a loan from a middle-rim bank, you are now in charge of a Colonial Combat Unit. These companies are flexible mercenary units backed up by shiny inner-world Rapid Prototypers, engineers, and soldiers. You do not carry around an army’s equipment: you carry men and build your army on site. This allows you to take jobs the universe over. If you need to cross an ocean world, custom helicopters or powerful gunboats are yours to create. An airless rock is simple to conquer with the right gear and imagination.

You are what the outer rim cries out for when their local militias are not enough. Your missions range from hostage rescue to surgical strikes to sabotage and everything in between. Keep the bank at bay with some fat paychecks and you will be a very rich man.

Or woman. Actually, that’s something that needs to be sorted out. Who are you, exactly?

A) I was a soldier in another CCU who earned enough to strike it out on my own. (Soldiers will respect you more and tactics come naturally to you.)

B) I was a bigshot corporate who lost it all in a bad deal. With a little creativity and charisma, this venture will reverse your fortune. (You are charismatic and able to secure good deals.)

C)I always wanted to create, and a CCU is a playground for somebody with my talents.
(You can personally help with weapon designs and make them better (in some cases, less bad))

D) Write-in.

Also to flesh you out, the thread will have to provide a name, gender, age, and perhaps a quick bio.

Of course, without your assets you are just one human in a lonely galaxy. The minutia are handled by the bean counters, what’s important are your big-ticket items:
-One small cadre of troops, with attendant engineers and support staff. A cadre is an organic unit without hard numbers of men. A cadre can be split in an operation for tactical aims but for simplicity’s sake will always return to the one cadre. The size of a cadre is fuzzy, but you will not be offered missions that are too much for you to take on with your amount of men. Cadre size will influence fighting power, among other things.
-One rapid prototyper. These machines may be expensive compared to assembly line production but they can turn a CAD file into a new tank, rifle, or artillery shell in minutes. This is your crown jewel and ever putting it into the line of fire is risking it all.
-One troop hauler. With your needs centring around hauling men, this spaceworthy base accomplishes just that and functions as an orbital HQ. It’s well defended against most pirate rabble, but is hardly an offensive ship.
- In the black for your first credit report. Your operation is overseen by corporate bankers at some stage, and you’re going to have to be rid of them soon. You have a grace period for the first three months of your tenure, after that, every three months time is payday for them.
-A visit to Central Station coming up. This one is most ephemeral compared to the others, but Central Station is a delightful middle-rim destination where you’ll be able to find lots on offer. Perhaps you might like to consider what you might like to acquire for your organisation? A rockstar engineer, a skilled leader or even a cunning lawyer might be helpful. Or perhaps swelling your ranks?

Welcome to Colonial Combat Unit! This is my first CYOA on SA, so wish me some luck and I hope I can become adapted to doing this on forums again. This game is going to be akin to a few classic CYOAs you’ve seen around here (Dungeon Keeper comes to mind). There are going to be some elements that might be new to you, however!
For one, sometimes typical CYOA decision making will turn into design proposals. These will be when you use your RP machine to design a hot new piece of gear for your troops, or even special tactics you’re wishing for them to follow. Regardless, this will essentially be one big write-in section. Everything has a mechanical backing to it (Vehicles especially. I may or may not be using a particularly infamous GURPS supplement on the backend.)But you won’t need to hash out every last piece of the design. It could be:

Design Proposal: Make a frag grenade that is effective underwater.

Or maybe:

Design Proposal:
MN-43 Frag Grenade: This grenade is shaped like an emergency flare, but with a ring. When the ring is pulled and it’s thrown into a body of water, it sinks down before the five second fuse goes off, where hydro-cavitating flechettes are propelled outwards through the water with enough velocity to kill.

You won’t be penalised for a lack of detail. Half the fun in games like these is coming up with crazy ideas! And if you don’t get voted up, well, try again next time. You never know when it might be useful...

Spinal transplants and tissue therapies were ineffective treatments for Dextarr and only caused him further nerve degradation, so the young boy genius threw himself into the world of advanced cybernetic prosthetics and applied himself over the years to building himself a new set of legs, a new spine, and slowly, over time, a fully-enhanced body for himself. Having risen to a promising mastery in his field at the young age of 28, Dextarr was contacted by the SecuriCorps to develop cybernetic augments, weapon interfaces, all-terrain vehicles, and recon drones for them, learning the various tools of the trade. It wasn't long after his contract with the SecuriCorps had completed that the inner-world Rapid Prototypers put Dextarr Pheseus in charge of his very own Colonial Combat Unit, destined for the outer rim. Perfect.

At Central Station, Dextarr is looking for: a skilled leader of soldiers and/or a cunning copyright lawyer

An engineer in the Outer Rim...
Few CCU's were owned by engineers. Most were owned and operated by stuffy suits or rich bastards who loved to see private armies blow people up in a customizable way. "Like an action movie franchise that'll never get stale." Was one quote you remember. But you weren't one of those people. You made things. You studied for a long time. And now you were ready to show the whole galaxy your talents.

Of course it's probably best to get a solid idea of who you are. Considering the fact you're certainly an engineer...
Current Votes:
-Plan Lux: Dextarr Pheseus, former wunderkind with a custom cyborg body and a background in military technology. Bad history with hyperdrives. 2 votes.
-Kimbra Mcnaley: Hothead farming girl with more of an electronics specialization. 1 vote.

Before you went to Central Station, however, it was perhaps best to inspect the object that you'd be getting intense use out of very soon.

The Rapid Prototyper was still in shrink wrap when you went to the custom built room for it. The machine was a basic model, true, but the fact was it still filled a pretty drat large room out. A boxy shape with multiple hatchways as well as a bank of computers all painted in eye-breaking corporate white greeted you. The hatches varied in size, ranging from the size of about an apple to about twice your size. The moving parts were all hidden under that white metal, and you could only see where everything went because of the fat black text on everything. "FEEDSTOCK. OUTPUT. EMERGENCY VALVE." This huge machine was the CM-2733. The CM-2733 was Creative Masters' followup to their legendary 2700 series Rapid Prototyper. This one was on the budget end, but it fulfilled your needs. Multiple outputs, so you could simultaneously print large and small things at once. The machining wasn't accurate to the atom, but it was precise enough for some interesting engineering. The whole thing didn't get the job fast, but it got it done well. As all RP machines were, it was fed by a number of common materials, with exotics being able to be used for special projects. These feedstocks were common enough to be available, but using the machine required refilling it, which ate into the budget. Regardless, you had feedstocks on hand, and perhaps the desire to create struck you as you inspected your machine. Tearing all of the plastic off (which was no small task) and ensuring the door to the cargo bay was open, you could start work on a project. Just to cut your teeth on a brand new career...

Design a new piece of hardware. Anything at all. It may not even see combat!

Putting farm-tech experience to work with a modification to the feeder/hopper. You'll be relying on this, and while the baseline is functional, with some modifications, add-ons, and replacement parts the basic model's functionality can be expanded to match that of a mid-range model.

As for personality, I guess I'll go Plan Lux.

Now, as for our first creation? Seeing as we are a small outfit with big dreams, and that our background experience (might) lie in shall we say personal enhancement - i present my proposal for our first masterpiece.

J'A.C.C.U.S.E - The Jet Assault Command Control Unit (Special Edition)

Consider this: What if we strapped the back of a fighter jet to the top of a mechanical exoskeleton, giving one soldier unparalleled agility, manoeuvring and raw shock impact in urban combat? If we also filled the the "cockpit" with state of the art sensor-readouts and communications equipment, we have a highly mobile commander to coordinate our war effort on-site. What could possibly go wrong!

I was gonna suggest a universal space jerry can that can be filled with whatever various things an army on the go needs, but Not Alex makes a good point about how anything big is gonna be "assembly required" so +1 to EXO1. Construction exos are always helpful and hopefully not too hard to make. It's just levers and springs, nowhere near the challenge that a full suit of actual power armor would be to design.

Yep! Modification is begrudgingly supported, but these things are black boxes made by specialist corporations who make assloads of money by making sure they're the only option. The actual software is very locked down, the hardware is hidden and obfuscated, and the blueprints/anything else you'd need to understand a complicated exotic machine are more under lockdown than the Seven Secret Herbs and Spices. Oh and corporate kill squads.

Also, yes, for gameplay reasons. I want to keep a reasonable "power curve" so even with this miracle of technology you're still limited in interesting ways. I appreciate the question, though!

"Those dudes can't sing for poo poo." Said Gunnery Sergeant Harn as he wrenched one of many bolts into place on the arm assembly.
There was singing. Well, warbling, more like, coming from a nearby portable speaker. Corporal Bastiat looked offended.
"Sarge, the aliens featured on that track are Hirathi monks who have trained on lonely monasteries their entire lives to create music to honour their god. It's amazing. Spiritual. Like it might just float away..."
The corporal's arms sagged which led to yelling from Harn, and soon the absent-minded Corporal was holding it correctly again. Then with a few whirs of an electric tool, the elbow-to-hand section was, well, complete.
"It sounds like poo poo though." The Sergeant said, stepping back and inspecting the entire frame for a moment, giving it taps along the metal.
"You just don't respect art, Sarge."
Harn looked offended just like Bastiat had a second ago. "Art? This is loving art, Corporal."
He gestured towards the exoskeleton. It stood about a head taller than him. It was a simple thing. Arms and legs with moulded, cushioned rests to mount oneself in. Ever-present black power cables snaking all over the machine with neat management. A computer screen with numerous pieces of information, including part temperatures, lifted weight, installed modules and more. The whole thing looked plain and industrial, where everything was just a cage for the parts that did work.
"Rapid Prototypers cut out a lot of the tooling cost that comes with normal assembly line work. It cuts down on production speed, too. So how do you leverage that advantage while cutting down on the disadvantage?"
Bastiat sat down in the cargo bay where they were assembling the robot. His eyes rolled as he spread out on the crate he'd chosen as a chair. "poo poo, I dunno, Sergeant. I got into this gig to shoot people and make a ton of cash. And I'm drat good at both!"
The sergeant continued without even acknowledging the rest of his answer. "Quality. So many parts on here are precision machined in ways that would be immensely costly to a factory." He says, noting a forged section of the hands. "Modularity. This is just one of a couple of arms. A welder arm! That girl-"
"Our boss, Sarge. Not 'that girl'."
"Ms McNaley went crazy designing this thing. But the ideas weren't bloat. Turning some lifting robot into a general purpose construction and logistics robot is just...."
"It's a loving forklift, Sarge."
"You say that now. But one day these things are going to build the bunkers that save your ungrateful rear end."

Design: EXO1.
Rating: Excellent Success

You inspect the assembled EXO1. This one is production, now. No more prototypes. It's a fine piece of logistics equipment that'll get a lot of use, and the men seem to have fun using them. They could hardly appreciate all the work that went into it, but, that wasn't the point.
What was the point was getting this operation off the ground. You had a lot to do, and to start, you had to acquire some things at Central Station. This place was a bazaar of things, but more importantly, people. It was a huge hub befitting it's name. "Ms McNaley, we're docked."
And there you were. Set loose upon this huge shopping mall, with cash burning a hole in your pocket. It was time for two things:
A job and some shopping.

SHOPPING
You have 4 points to spend on the below options. Please spend them all.

Six Masks: An alien from a race known as Jen. Tall, blue, with scales, not dissimilar from a humanoid lizard, but with a set of extra arms. This one is a commander with a good track record in low-intensity and warfare and pirate hunting, but is relatively new to CCU work. Six would work as a Cadre Commander and provide a tactical and command edge. 3 points.

Marian: An enigmatic engineer with great skill in electromagnetic and laser weaponry. They previously worked on the infamous Planet Cracker, a huge railgun that was created with the help of enslaved engineers and labourers. Marian has had difficulty finding work after this incident, even though she was enslaved. 3 points.

Jetta Steel: High-powered lawyer and perhaps a little full of themselves, and loaded to the gills with cosmetic surgery. Their career has been going for 40 years in corporate and mining law, but they've recently pursued a doctorate in Military and Mercenary Law. They would provide numerous boons such as preventing legal trickery in signed contracts, providing recourse if screwed, and more legal benefits. 4 points.

???: An unsolicited message was sent to your inbox while you were in a cafe resting. "You kill for a living. Good. I am an artist of killing and require a home. I require nothing but space. Check your front pocket." Incredibly suspicious and weird, and when you checked your front pocket, it was a piece of paper. "If you want me, message me back." 0 points.

Quen Noll: An accountant and administrator with years of experience and a dreadfully tired demeanour. She'll help manage everything, so you lose a little bit less money and earn a little bit more from every action. 2 points.

Small Cadre: A brand new, freshly raised, unequipped Cadre. You can keep them separate for flexibility or combine them for fighting power. 1 point, 2 available.

Hospital Ship: A ship with dedicated powerful hospital equipment functioning as an orbital emergency ward and ICU with decent capacity. Doctors included. 1 point.

Scrap Followers: Scavengers, scrappers, and nomads. These people will follow your ships and host numerous parties, entertainment functions, feasts and more, improving morale considerably. All they require is some battlefield scrap to keep them fed. 1 point.

JOBS
These jobs will all last you the 3 month period. Money is given in %, aka, the % of your repayments to the bank for these three months earned by that action. Any surplus can be spent or saved after the payments go through.

A) Rule the Waves! CCU needed for intense anti-pirate action in island chains on tropical planet. Sea, air, and land combat expected.

C) Watchers. Mercenaries needed as impartial third party to defend nuclear warheads during disarmament.

Hospital Ship (1 point)
Quen Noll (2 points)
1 New Cadre (1 point)

We need a hospital, we need an accountant, and with the one leftover point let's just pick up another cadre because more manpower's always useful. The weirdo leaving cryptic messages sounds mostly like a 14 year old who's trying WAY too hard to be edgy on the internet, not a professional soldier, steer VERY clear of them they're not a good fit for what we're trying to do here.

As for the job, B. Because I like trains. And also because having to operate on sea, land, and air for our very first operation seems like trying to get into combined arms a little too fast, we don't even know how well our troops can fight as dismounted riflebeings, much less if they (or our budget) can handle a complex combined arms operation. The other option is to sit right on top of a bunch of nuclear warheads which people are trying to actively sabotage, which sounds incredibly safe and good for morale. TrainWorld seems like the perfect starter mission.

Edit: Question - is the hospital ship surface-rated or does it have to stay parked in orbit? It's not the end of the world if we have to go all the way back to orbit for trauma care, but it'd be great if the ship can land so we only have to medevac back to our FOB.

It isn't surface rated but has it's own ambulance-like launches that've good for shuttling back and forth. It's more of a second line option than a field surgery one. You're going to need surface medical presence.

With that said, it feels like a hospital ship might be jumping the gun a wee bit. I wonder if a Cadre Commander Six Masks could train up the troops on some basic battlefield first aid.

I hear Crazycyrodude's reservations about going into combined arms ops this early. Having recognized that, my hope is that with Six Masks anti-pirate experience and Kimbra's electrical wizardry, we might come up with a way to mitigate some of the pirate's strengths.

B: Train Wars

Our new EXO1 units can do great work fortifying the trains and combining the enemy trains we defeat into a huge trainmech or something. It'll be great.

Isn't B: Train Wars an assault operation?

Keep in mind that we're a farm girl with anger management problems and a soldiering iron.

Lets get our X tons of Duranium back!

....Is that still a valid thing to jingoistically blow out of proportion?

Apparently we'd be blowing up enemy infrastructure along the rail line, which you can of course do with legs or conventional armored vehicles, but you can ALSO steal a train your first week there and turn it into a doomtrain with which we can roll down the lines blasting away at the baddies.

Exactly this. A rolling command centre is our first priority.

Also i guess i#m cancelling my vote for scrap followers then. I want to keep all the loot for ourselves! Get rid of one of the cadres as well so the final vote is One Cadre, One Hospital Ship and One Accountant.

I'm persuaded.

Switching vote to B. All aboard the doomtrain!

I'll stick with my shopping order of 1 additional cadre and Commander Six Masks to whip them into shape.

My reasoning? If the doomtrain fails, we're pretty much dead or captured. As such, not much need for a hospital ship.

Always lawyer-up the first chance you get.

We're just starting out, and we're short on options, so might as well hear the 'Killing Artist's' pitch before turning him down.

As for the mission, we have GP construction EXO-Suits, might as well start with a good old fortification building mission.
