It is a nice comedic break from the serious arc of the political climate, terrorism, the government, and family dynamics.

The story has been hinted at (before) that the Handler has a traumatic experience with losing her loved ones, and the timeline seems to tie in with the raid started Loid's origin story. I wonder if the manga will delve into it, or her backstory will become a side story one-shot.

It has been an ongoing story element that Anya and Yor have been throwing off his game. Otherwise, for instance, he would have realized that Yor is an assassin; having him hesitate to kill his fake brother-in-law is much inline with his current character.

I would really like to know the Director's backstory. From Loid's side, we got an inkling about his boss's backstory; I imagine Yor's boss probably has an intriguing story of his own.

Donovan has 100% been loving around with his eldest son's brain. The fact that he used to watch him study so intently and now ignores him now he knows his machine-child works and can operate independently seems like conclusive evidence of this.

I am not sure that is the exact inference to make. I believe Demetrius inherently has the brain that he has. I believe the focus is more that their father is now busy compared to how attentive to his family he was before. Based on what Anya mind-read from his mom, the turning point for the Desmond family seems to revolve around or happen to occur around when Damian was born. Is Donovan just too busy now with rebellious schemes that he has no time for family? Or perhaps there is more going on surrounding the birth of Damian?

Darth TNT posted:

More interestingly, why is she good at classical language?

I believe the inference is that the scientists or whomever imbued Anya with her powers used classical language as a test for her mind reading powers. For example, to confirm that her mind reading works, the scientists would speak to her normally but only think in classical language or vice versa. There are other ways to form this experiment like 999, but classical language was probably involved to test her mind reading abilities.

It's nice that Ando didn't go to the cliche of having Demetrius be a bully to Damian. In a different manga, his character would look down on Damian for only getting a single Stella. There's still something off about the guy, but not in a way that's actively unpleasant for Damian.

Given Anya's mind reading ability, Demetrius being overtly stolid rather than being mean makes for an interesting dynamic. His demeanor simply reflects his mind.

Loid is generally smart and insightful, but early on, it has been established that the stress of being a dad has significantly weakened his mental capacity to think critically about his family. That is the basis for Loid not figuring out his entire family dynamic.

That's fair (though there are no societal signs that Ostania has feudalism and mercantilism economy would not impose restrictions on its exports). What I am suggesting is that Ostania may ultimately be a mixed economy (like many modern societies), but having wealthy CEOs, politicians, high-ranking military officers, etc. are present in capitalism, socialist market, etc. (I just have a feeling that the signs point more towards a mixed economy that leans more towards capitalism.)

This chapter was honestly very touching. Anya manage to win at the last question with what she knew about Damian, and given that the relationship between him and her has mostly been one-sided from Damian's affection for her, she actually felt comfortable enough to tell him about her powers.

That being said, Loid does not know that Anya knows about his mission or that he is the master of disguise. Wouldn't he think that Anya would find it weird that there are strings attached to her that are making it easier for her to hold her poses?

Flair

I like the allegory the flashback has brought forth. The same reason war continues to occur is the same reason why people have trouble confessing their feelings to each other. It fits the ongoing plot with everyone in the family having their own secrets, including their feelings for each other.

Nevertheless, I have a feeling that next chapter is about how Martha got acquainted with the Blackbell family.

TwoPair posted:

The worst part is I know what's coming now that we know Henderson's been forced into marriage, Martha's finally gonna make it home in time to see him in his loveless marriage.
I hope there is some love in there at least. Supposedly, she was the only one who remained after his outburst, so either other people do not want her, or hopefully, she actually likes someone who isn't a warmonger.

Ytlaya posted:

I forgot (was it previously mentioned?) that Henderson was already married. Is he still married? It'll be really sad if he is and they still can't get together.
As far as I can remember, no. In fact, we don't know if he has any children or if his wife is still alive, though given the current circumstances, perhaps not but the circumstances make it awkward for them to be together now.

It wouldn't surprise me if Desmond or some other antagonist has a different telepathy related power, like say the ability to telepathically brainwash people or something.

It doesn't have to be related to telepathy. Given the experiments we know about so far (Anya, Bond), all of these supernatural powers seem related to the theme of "information".

Nonetheless, the current trend is to keep those with supernatural powers to characters whose applications of the powers are rather limited (e.g. Anya is not forthwith with her powers because she is afraid she will be mistreated if her powers were known and Bond is just a dog). If a character like Loid had access to this level of power, the story would easily collapse to his agenda, so if there is an ally or antagonist with a different power, either it has to be limited in order for the story not to just end, or it has to counterbalanced with Anya/Bond in play.

gimme the GOD drat candy posted:

i'm not sure how anyone would ever have found out that bond has psychic powers without a telepath. how do you perform an experiment when you can't check the result?

There are a few of ways to do this (and one of them might have hindered on the success of Anya e.g. having a telepath who could read Bond's mind), and this is assuming that the scientists know they were instilling a specific kind of power into Bond.

1. Have an enclosed space where Bond chooses 1 out of X rooms where only one of the rooms have food. It has been shown that the future Bond sees is not absolutely, and current actions will affect what the future is. So Bond will likely see a future where there is a room where he can eat food. And then through probability, they can infer he is clairvoyant.

2. Have an enclosed space where Bond chooses 1 out of X rooms where all but one room is a hazard. This is a more clearcut experiment since the above relies on the scientists understanding or assuming if Bond's power to see the future is absolute or not, but if Bond can see the future, they would realize that Bond is going to hesitate ever going through a door that has danger in it, and will not hesitate to enter rooms where there is some reward or no danger.

If the ways of imbuing supernatural powers have a random chance of success and the powers themselves are random, they can try a series of experiments to try to isolate for a series of powers they are looking for.

If Martha being in servitude to the Blackbell family is just from their company not cheaping out as part of the military industrial complex, I guess that is in line with how she has chosen her employment since the beginning. Nevertheless, she took the long and hard way to learn that war is bad, and no one side is truly just or evil.

Martha said that her uncle was heavily involved in reconstruction, so hopefully that and her marriage to Henry means she was at least somewhat anti-war

I made this point a few chapters ago in this thread: given that she was the only candidate left after his outburst about the war, I would assume she is anti-war as well, and she was looking for someone who was not a warmonger (which was probably rare at the time).

If anything, the relationship and complications between Henderson and Martha is an allegory to the relationship and complications between countries.

I knew he wasn’t going to die since there is not a lot of build up of who is he as character besides this chapter. Him dying otherwise would have to signal a massive shift in tone for the story since, literarily, he serves as comedic relief, and there is more backstory that has been hinted at but yet explored.

Nonetheless, I like how that ultimately ends. In the end, he values his own work and friends above his own happiness.

There's definitely some sort of catch otherwise this manga would have ended a while back when Loid met Donovan the first time.

TwoPair posted:

Yeah Loid would totally be disappeared by now if Donovan actually got a read on him. I mean I guess you could argue that maybe Donovan has surveillance on Loid, but Loid's been actively running other side ops against Ostania in the mean time, so like, it's doing him no good to keep letting Loid go free.

Donovan could be making a much bigger play by keeping Loid alive and not monitored especially since, aside from supernatural powers, Loid can detect most other ways that would kill or monitor him. So if Donovan made a move based on information that he would otherwise not have, it might backfire. For one, maybe he is hoping to use Loid as future pawn, or because Donovan does not actually want a war, he perhaps just finds Loid amusing regardless. At the very least, I am a bit dubious of Melinda's account about Donovan's ability to mind read since she even accounts that her eldest is also troubled by his father, and we know from Anya's interaction that he thinks in a way that would minimize how much a mind reader can read from his mind. Or perhaps, because he suspects that his father can read his mind, Demetrius has trained to empty his mind as much as possible. Nevertheless, having the ability to read someone's mind does not directly explain how he is able to trigger -- what we have seen so far -- his son and his wife without him making a direct command; if it is mind reading, perhaps he might have figured out what is the most efficient way to condition and instill fear into them so that they will just listen to him at the conditioning, or perhaps his abilities lay elsewhere if they exist at all.
