Do you know of any cool or weird covers you want to share? I'm personally kind of a huge music nerd and I really love weird covers. Even bad ones! I thought I'd share some of the odder ones that I know of and see what other people might have. No worries about anything being "not weird enough" or something. Go wild! Here's a few from me: First is this cover of the Beatles hit Yellow Submarine by a Japanese traditional singer of Minyou. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnMViTALj8g&t=65s This cover by Negativland pissed off BOTH U2 AND Casey Kasem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqse3vYcnaU I know it's a BIT early for Christmas but Butthole Surfers version of Good King Wenceslas is probably the best Christmas song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uZGZwuuugM Let me welcome everybody to the middle of the west. A cover of California Love by Faxed Head. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwTAX6XFeIM A grime take on The Equals classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpIFKKa1u-U Chicago on Chicago. Big Black covers Cheap Trick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF3zzFHItgk You guys got anything neat? Escape From Noise fucked around with this message at 22:38 on Aug 10, 2019 |

the Resident's did a cover of Jambalaya that's pretty far removed from the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBvavPrNFNw (the Resident's are basically cheating though because they have a ton of weird covers) Placebo's take on Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill has always been a high point for me, cover-wise. Has a weird air of quiet menace I really enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5GuBa4Bbnw My Bloody Valentine covered a wire song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUBcqs0Z9QA Not technically a cover as such, but I really like Ween's take on this old English Ballad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnPwcjp_Ass Bardo Pond's cover of Funkadelic's Maggot Brain distills the original song to a hypnotic minimalism:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIJJvxpz-0k&t=38s The Kills take on Fleetwood Mac's Dreams is an interesting experiment:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7St2Gz3PTc Last but not least my favorite cover of all time, Bauhaus's goth-rock take on Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. I really like the guitar:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWCQBtRzNJQ

One more that I'm including because it absolutely owns but is not "weird" or "wild" as such: Built to Spill's cover of Neil Young's classic guitar workout Cortez the Killer. Fair warning this is a long jam, but it's so propulsive you won't even notice 20 minutes have gone by: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNOvqFISxIc&t=94s

Melvin's covering The Butthole Surfers song Graveyard is fun. I saw them do it live a few years ago along with Goin Down To Florida when they toured with Jeff Pinkus. https://youtu.be/WAQGwf0Qb_E Dead Cross's cover of Bauhau's Bela Lugosi's Dead isn't that different but I like it for some reason. https://youtu.be/Vd26WCprkOM |

I really like the Black Key's cover of Captain Beefheart's "Grown So Ugly". It's just raw as hell and gritty as gently caress. Should be played in dive bars at maximum volume: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ll1vpyv8W0 Big Black's cover of Kraftwerk's the Model is another of my favorites and sounds nothing like the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9zcjhC_myo The Dirt Bombs cover of J.J. Barnes's Chains of Love is another great garage rock classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USuhLK_bn_Y For something completely different, check out this dub reggae cover of a Radiohead song. It works disturbingly well imo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USuhLK_bn_Y same guys did a dub tribute to dark side of the moon. The opening of their take on "Money" always gets a chuckle out of me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_aYli_1iqs Always had a fondness for Sonic Youth's cover of The Carpenter's Superstar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_aYli_1iqs Also really like Monster Magnet's take on Hawkwind's Brainstorm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctmn6zZmy0c Ditto Hijokaidan's take on Silver Machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBCWxjV_M64 Thin White Rope did a great cover of Marty Robbins They're Hanging Me Tonight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgBIYoRJnhY Slowdive's Cover of Syd Barret's Golden Hair is shoegaze perfection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzWuok7EyjA I like Cathrine Wheel's take on Mission of Burma's That's When I Reach For My Revolver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK-4_3Y_sNU Lastly, I'm not 100% sure this counts, but The Butthole Surfer's Sweat Loaf is a super pisstake version of Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-fE5NbilMw

don't know whether this exactly counts as a cover, but it has absolutely outstanding use of the stereo field. put on your best headphones and sit in a dark room for with your eyes closed for seven and a half minutes. Ken Ishii's remix of Steve Reich's "Come Out" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAyJwJZU2es more weird: Cristina covering Prince "When You Were Mine" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3pIxfGEhM0&t=102s totally unhinged: Leon Redbone's version of "Sheik of Araby" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W0KphJ9CNs also don't know whether doing jazz standards counts as "covering" but the guitarist miles okazaki has a crazy 6 album thing where he covers every single thelonious monk song arranged for solo guitar and some of them are sort of "traditional" like this one, Bye-Ya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKq_s78--3k but some of them are really pretty peculiar, like this one of Pannonica https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGBQY9GX3Js here's a differnt jazz genius doing something that's more definitely a cover:Jason Moran and his trio playing Afrika Bambaataa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSMfVth-jrg, he also does this solo on a prepared piano on his album "modernistic" but I like this version better because even though it's not quite as weird it cooks more and heres just a historical oddity: mike love of the beach boys singing merle haggard's "okie from muskogee" with the grateful dead backing him. somewhere i have a bootleg cassette of a different version which is just the grateful dead and is way better but i can't find it online and this one is weirder because of the beach boys thing. lol at "we don't take our trips on lsd" finally, k.d. lang put out a fantastic album of songs that are about/mention smoking called "drag"...thye're all fantastic. picked pretty much at random here's her cover of steve miller's the joker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18NVj_38Sz4 ---------------- |

I am cool with a very loose interpretation of the word "cover" remixes and versions of old standards are absolutely welcome. I just used "cover" for lack of a better, more nebulous one. |

There's an extended mix of this on Spotify, but this gives you the idea of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXL6EN7kFf0 I like the male vocals for this song - Though I'm still not sure if it isn't just the Beyoncé vocal slowed and warped and I haven't got the tools with me to test that theory. |

Okay! I have Wi-Fi on this train to Kyoto so I have time AND internet to give these things a proper listen so in the words of Crazy Titch: It's on! It's on! It's ON! I have very fond memories of Kate Busy because of a former housemate and great friend in Seattle. We'd get high and watch Kate Bush videos and listen to mom jams like Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman. Speaking of Crazy Titch he did a cover of Dizzee Rascal's Just a Rascal but flipped it on him into a diss track. It's not super great lyrically or name wise but I get a kick out of it. https://youtu.be/K_7XipJGYWc E: I went through a big grime phase for some reason a while back. At the same time I happened to be listening to a lot of Slaves too so this was a neat coincidence: https://youtu.be/06vwuE2G53E Escape From Noise fucked around with this message at 06:46 on Aug 11, 2019 |

Jimi Hendrix's version of "All along the Watchtower" originally by Bob Dylan had so much of that feel and soul that Jimi could put into a song that apparently Bob said something along the lines of "This isn't my song anymore. it's Jimi's" and even himself started playing it at shows more like the cover version because it was that good. How much of that is myth I don't know for sure but I have heard it from multiple places, and it's hard to deny Jimi tears it up either way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLV4_xaYynY
