perhaps i should elaborate on my OP:
im a weirdo who thinks that talking about games can be informative and sometimes just as interesting as playing them, just in a different way. certain people do this very well, doing it for laughs or serious analysis, and outside the scope of a Let's Play. we should find them, talk about them and maybe kick some views and subs their way

matthewmatosis is good but he has a pretty strict mechanical focus iirc and that gets a lil dull for me, as someone who often watches vids on games i havent played. what gets interesting to me is when the reviewer talks about how the mechanics fit into the themes of the game, or how they avoid or suffer from ludonarrative dissonance

joseph anderson is another reviewer who does long thematic reviews but im not going to link him because i find that his videos could be 1/3rd the length and say the same amount. he has a like 3 Hour video on the witness

This guy does a lot of good game analysis and even though I disagree with his most popular review (BoTW), I think his Mario Odyssey is Overrated review is spot-on. It was also incredibly easy to just drag F76 through the mud, but he does a really good job of highlighting the fact that the game actually had a lot of care put into it, and therefor extrapolates a lot of interesting theories about what actually happened.

I appreciate the effort this guy puts into his vids but a lot of his opinions come across as convoluted attempts at having a unique or unconventional take on something without really saying anything worthwhile. During his Baldur's Gate review he said it isn't a "modern digital role-playing game," but a technological and artistic framework for playing dungeons and dragons as a solitary experience........................................ so it's a role-playing game.

perhaps he meant it isnt a "modern digital role-playing game" like skyrim would be, and many people would think of skyrim when they think "modern digital role-playing game?" idk, i havent watched the baldur's gate vid. curious if you have any other examples of this in his other videos? he certainly does have his own opinion and agenda but he makes it p obvious to the viewer and explains himself p thoroughly. his video on postal and "rear end in a top hat simulators" is an example of this, where he provides his story about how his car was stolen and destroyed and how it fueled his current opinions on those games, citing the act of repairing the car (which he did) as an example of healthy masculinity and the destruction of it as an example of toxic masculinity. of course a buncha doofuses come in to say "But Noah, How Do You Know The Car Thief Was Male"

tehsnakerer is one of my favorite game youtubers, he mostly just does long-form explanations of the game as it goes along while giving his thoughts on plot and gameplay. He's a pretty funny guy without trying super hard to be, and while I wouldn't call his analysis deep he seems to get what makes games click, gameplay-wise.

the interesting thing is that he really seems to love janky-rear end european FPS's and equally janky japanese action games so you get some pretty unique games covered on there. I love his video on brigand. a survival FPS/RPG made by one guy that's so janky that he had to send his save file over to the guy who made it multiple times just to get his specific bugs fixed. Seeing him still have a sincere admiration for the game while also saying how much it sucks is pretty fun.

His video on Winback is also a pretty good rundown of the game that introduced cover systems in shooters and its successes and failures (including how little cover actually matters in it), as well as just how weird the PS2 port of it is in hindsight.

His videos run a little long (40 minutes-an hour, occasionally a bit more) but they don't really feel like they're wasting time, he just likes covering the beats of a game.

Crowbcat is sometimes great at capturing the zeitgeist when it comes to controversial releases (or otherwise just pointing out lies or fabrications), but most of the time the comparisons of two games in the same franchise boil down to "two different games made by two different development teams targeting different hardware and made under different circumstances....are different from each other!!! even though they're part of the same series!!!! :monocle:"

They give me a really bad vibe because they come off like someone who doesn't actually understand anything about development nitpicking details that aren't necessarily meaningless but are usually included because the devs had room to breathe and slack off and experiment with random weird poo poo instead of being under the gun to deliver a franchise sequel for half the budget in 8 months, just in time for the winter launch period. (In other words, they seemingly target the game as a product of its assumed lazy/stupid/bad developers but not necessarily as a product of its likely much worse publisher.) Is every MGS game after 2 inherently an inferior cash grab because they don't feature an overly detailed ice cube melting simulation?

Gamers should be more aware of the artifice of the hype machine, but the absolutism over what are usually minor details gives me the creeps and is almost certainly what leads to stuff like the meltdowns over puddles in Spiderman.

I probably like his Shanidfication of Fallout video the most, because it goes into one of the main things I love about games; how they are able to do all these side bits of character and world-building that other mediums couldn't really do as well due to the interactivity of games.

This is a long (seriously) response video by Mauler to hbomberguy defending Dark Souls 2; the black sheep of the series. The defense video itself also uses footage by matthewmatosis (his channel is also great btw).

What I like about the critique is that I initially thought hbomberguy had a good point and maybe Dark Souls 2 wasn't as bad as I thought. But point by point, Mauler shows us that the arguments presented are flimsy at best. Not just a great video on a divisive game, but also a great video on how to critique fairly.

Sure, everyone´s free to like or dislike whatever they want and make a long video essay about it. But you can absolutely take a statement such as "Dark Souls 2 is more challenging - therefor it is more fun" and examine it, as Mauler does.

Also Hbomberguy was using clips from Matthewmatosis´ excellent critique of Dark Souls 2 and smugly saying `you´re playing it wrong´. The line between his honest opinion and what seems to be presented as fact is blurred. For the record I like most of Hbomberguy's other videos.

I don´t know what the right wing comment has to do with any of it.

It's the "facts not feelings" statement preceeding ten fuckin' hours (I can't get over this it's ten loving hours) of opinions that are preceded with "here's a fact" style statements. It's a bullshit grift way of "arguing" that folks like Peterson, Shapiro, etc. have built careers on.

And like, hbomberguy's whole video was bookended with, and occasionally peppered with, "this whole thing is my opinion, if you disagree that's totally fine." It's like spending ten hours (ten loving hours I can't believe this poo poo) arguing facts (not opinions! facts!) with a kid who came onto the playground saying "my favorite color is blue and i love my mommy more than anyone." I'm going to look at the person doing this as super unhinged and weird.

idk, as someone who beat 1 (and almost beat 3) before even trying 2, and believes 2 is kinda the low point of the series, i think hbomberguy has some really great points. the new staff got experimental with the formula and even if some of the changes didnt totally pan out, they showed that they could actually work with more refining, which is what happened with bloodborne (imo). they injected new life into the thing instead of doing more of the safe thing, and that takes some stones

damnit, i was gonna post a ton of Tim Rogers videos, because I've been posting them in the PS4 thread forever and I'm sure people are getting tired of it.

But yeah, watch the Final Fantasy 7 translation series, it's really really good, his best videos by far out of all of the videos he's done for Kotaku. Here's episode 11, which I recommend checking out first maybe, even though starting from the beginning is probably best, it doesn't really matter, and the quality of the first video isn't nearly as brilliant as the last few so it's a better representation of the series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5f4-m77O90

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H67itWCG1JY&t=1831s A good GDC talk that's also mostly funny, and has more to do with game development and what not to do when making an indie game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMRiFsFwDQg This is a video walking through and scrutinizing every little detail and talking about the game in general and how it used "honest geometry" which was uncommon at the time, considering third person 3D games were relatively new at the time, but they also just talk about the Gall Spaceport level from the Nintendo 64 Star Wars game Shadows of the Empire and how great it is.

This isn't a video obviously, but I think it's one of the best 'srs video game analysis' things he's done, and it's not even necessarily supposed to be, but I think it's interesting and also might as well be a video like a lot of the videos I like that people have posted, just stick some Bioshock Infinite gameplay over it when he breaks down why Bioshock is garbage https://soundcloud.com/bad-end-438270825/bad-end-31-ft-tim-rogers-dragon-quest-xi-donut-county-bioshock-internet-comments

I just think this one's funny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA7O6aNzLLw

A lot of his videos are mostly just funny, and happen to be insightful just because dude is smart and has worked for Suda 51 and Sony Japan and he's just entertaining in a way that a lot of Youtube game theory dudes aren't. But re: the FF7 series, I think it's important to note that it's not to nitpick or make fun of "this guy are sick" and say lol, translation errors! But rather to provide a bit of context behind the way games are translated from Japanese into English, and being able to identify whether a game is Japanese strictly from the English text and how it's written, and he goes over the styles that are typically used when translating video games, but especially older JRPGs, because of limitations in space due to the fact that Japanese can be written in much less space, often a fraction of the characters, than English RPG scripts and it results in a lot of punchy writing. He says he hopes to provide a rosetta stone, instead of a direct translation, to help understand and infer from an English translation of a game how the original Japanese text would read (or a very roundabout and basic example of linguistics and how Japanese typically translates to English in a very literal way).

Also yeah, gently caress that 10 hour rebuttal of Hbomberguy's Dark Souls 2 video, he's definitely a Gamergate/garbage boy/pedantic neck beard and don't waste your time watching any of it.
