The latest one is a pair-up game, you're just pairing up with yakuza goasts instead of characters with names or portraits.

They still get more lines than Flandre has had, total, since her introduction.

While I'm afraid of fanning the flames of this discussion, personally I think something attractive about Touhou to me, as an asexual/aromantic person, is that you can totally see the setting as asexual. That's not to say that none of the characters are in relationships or don't care about each other in that way--there's certainly been a lot of subtext in the comics especially--but more that no one seems to care that much? None of the characters define themselves or their motivations by their romantic relationships, if any. None of the stories are written around that kind of thing. It's just not... a big deal? At best we just see people being very casually comfortable with each other.

I dunno, I just like that a lot, and I think makes it stands out from most other media. Even in stories that aren't about romance, you always have one or two side characters who are entirely defined by their romantic feelings, for example.

More specifically, it's directly from Shion's ending in AoCF (the game she debuted in), and somewhat surprisingly they were still hanging out together when they made cameos in WaHH.

So ho does the gacha work? Pay money for your favourite Touhous? Stat boosts or something?

They haven't made it entirely clear yet, but there's definitely some level on which it's "pay money to pull on a slot machine and hope it's your favorite instead of Wriggle." Although they did mention at one point that none of the characters are considered rarer than others; every character will have a chance of being pulled at any rarity.

I should probably be more specific: we know that there are different rarities of character, and also that they're giving out free gacha tickets as a pre-registration bonus. The very premise of these games is to pull on a lever and hope that what comes out is good. I would think that sort of thing is non-negotiable in a gacha game: that's what the customers come for. As for what ZUN is against, he hasn't been very specific about that. He dislikes "predatory" monetization systems, but I don't recall him ever specifying what exactly those are.

And speaking personally as someone who's played a few of these sorts of games, and seen others in detail while doing research, I have to say that there's a pretty huge range of "predatori-ness" among them. It's possible that ZUN simply wants to keep it on the lighter side of that, rather than being against the gacha concept itself. I dunno.

The plot is harmless fluff stories like "Aunn watches over the shrine while Reimu is away" and "Youmu has to prepare a big banquet because Yuyuko's throwing a party."

The board game part is actually kind of interesting but also super random and you can't even use any of your cool powers until the game's practically already over.

The 17.5 demo is out at Reitaisai. I've seen a stream of the gameplay.

Basically it plays out like a Tasofro fighting game story mode. It's all boss fights, and if you hit them enough during a spellcard they get stunned so you can wail on them. Danmaku can be attacked/grazed and it turns into water, but melee attacks have to be dodged, and it shows you red warning text where it'll hit.

The art is kinda amateurish but it'll be interesting to see how ZUN shows off his love for mystery novels.

I would interpret 反則 as, like, cheating. Like a foul in sports. The idea being that she's a detective who can read minds, which is cheating.

Hello I am the dumbass who didn't upgrade my dudes.

Anyway I would say the main thing about these games is their narrative focus. And by "narrative" I don't just mean the actual story, although the story's pretty nice too. I mean the music and animations and the way spellcards play out in battle as multiple boss phases. Everything is in service to the mood, the raw emotions of the scene. To the point where people playing it blind in Japanese (which they don't understand) have been made to cry.

It's a very emotional work, even if that emotion is sometimes just "gently caress yeah, let's do this!"

Also speaking as a subject-matter expert on Touhou, I have never seen a work that is so respectful of canon trivia, even as it goes out of its way to ignore some it to tell its own story.
