They're bringing back the Graffiti Kingdom franchise for a mobile game pretty soon, so someone decided to get ZUN involved as well, even if it's just to bring back his "Flying Maiden".

Touhou Cannonball is scheduled for release next month. The full opening animation was also revealed tonight (may not load outside of Japan, apparently):

Touhou Cannonball was also released today. Not sure how much depth there is yet but it's interesting enough. Definitely need to know enough Japanese to figure out win conditions and whatnot.

Yeah, seems like dupes are only useful for dismissing at the moment, but if you have inventory space, might as well hold onto them if you want.

Also Touhou Cannonball Patchouli: "I've walked all of 5 minutes and I'm tired. Let's just burn down the trees around Misty Lake to flush it out."

For actual canon content, Tasofro just announced a demo for the next game: Touhou 17.5 - Strange Tale of Greed ~ Submerged Hell. Seems to be a side-scrolling game about water.

Just seems like fancy alternative kanji, which ZUN is a big fan of, for 強欲.

The first chapter of the new official manga is out, along with its full title: Touhou Chireikiden (not the same kanji as Chireiden but intentionally similar) Irregular Detective Satori

https://touhougarakuta.com/comic/touhouchireikiden_1

The art is kinda amateurish but it'll be interesting to see how ZUN shows off his love for mystery novels.

That was my first thought but then I saw she seems to actively go out of the way to read minds, not to mention her title has "armchair detective" in it. Still, I admit I might be reading too much into all that.

And yeah, the wing hats are hilarious.

There was a Swedish gaming magazine that interviewed ZUN in 2006. There's a translation of it on the English wiki, but it was recently obtained by a Japanese fan and they discovered it contains what is probably the first and only published self-portrait of him.

Alphes' art in HM was iffy but everything from the earlier fighting games which all of the imitations seem to be based on were perfectly fine.

Of course, I don't get why there has to be Alphes-style variations on everything in the first place so moot point.

As far as I'm aware, he just wasn't satisfied with the way a larger game dev company worked. He wanted more general involvement in their creation but the nature of the beast is to be assigned to a specific area, so he worked on a few projected then bounced, presumably on amicable terms.

Yeah, besides the circles, the other parts of the doujin economy like the printers are also affected by cancellations. Consignment shops have been pushing to pick up the slack but events are still a big part of the culture and sales so prolonged cancellation is dangerous on several angles.

Like, people are kind of raising eyebrows at Comiket not being called off but there's no way they can reschedule that at all what with the Olympics since that was what forced them to hold it earlier to begin with. If that gets cancelled, there won't be anything on the same scope until December. I wouldn't call them a cornerstone, but the consequences will be felt far and wide. That's why I think it would take either a government decree or a direct request from the venue owner (which is what happened with Reitaisai).

Touhou Lost Word, the other big smartphone/gacha game just came out a few days ago. The overall tone is a bit more serious than Cannonball (right at the start, Reimu, Marisa, and Sanae get transported to a parallel Gensokyo that for some reason has a high school with matching uniforms, but is flooded by the moon's seawater and has no immediately apparent source of fresh water) but it has way more of the smartphone game trappings like complex leveling systems, auto/idle play features, and multiple kinds of currency. It's a more than a little concerning to see Reimu and Marisa get hype over ever larger in-game purchases.

Aesthetically, I prefer Cannonball more since the Live2D and 3D animation is more expressive than simple facial expression changes and puppet-like battle movements, but Lost Word does let you pick from three different voice banks for each character you obtain which is pretty impressive.

The actual lines are the same, only the voices are different, so while that technically could be possible, it's not that dramatic a change.

And yeah, the JAGMO performances are really amazing, especially in person. They had another one scheduled for during Comiket but that got cancelled so they're uploading past recordings to kinda fill that gap.

I guess a year is a pretty decent run and it went out on a high note, but I wouldn't be surprised if Lost Word ate its lunch and Aniplex wasn't happy about that.

It's a shame because I think the overall presentation and music is way better. Live2D & fluid 3D models beat flash-esque animation and paper-cutout wiggling in every department that isn't financial.

Also, I didn't notice until just a moment ago but it looks like they already have a Chinese translation up and will have an English version later so I guess we'll find out then.

I think it's more purist in the "doujin" sense, since I've seen a handful of JP people on my Twitter turn their nose up at the fact there are so many gacha smartphone games coming out, especially the one headed by Aquastyle, also a former doujin circle. They think ZUN & co. have sold out, even though ZUN really hasn't really changed his stance at the core.
