I knew a guy about 10 years ago who was ~22 and won a $75k online poker tourney. He bought a townhouse and filled it with ridiculous poo poo like a golden tee machine and two of those bar trivia megatouch machines. He went broke pretty quickly and went into foreclosure within 2-3 years of purchase.

I knew a guy who was a part time poker player/full time PhD researcher. Dude had spreadsheets detailing every single game he played and could say 'yeah, I'm making 30k a year with a varience of X and this is exactly how much I'm willing to bet per game given these particular variables' etc etc. At that point its blurring the line between gambling and investing in your own wierd stock/company.

professional gambling provides a good quality of life for a handful of people and for everyone else it is worse than minimum wage. you might get bigger lump sums sometimes but you spend for loving ever getting them and it's more stressful than just having a regular job.

gambling can be ok if you can play as a game and arent trying to make it your way of life. it can be a way to recreate. you can play a good amount of time for $20 and you're playing penny and nickle blinds/games. it adds an element of adrenaline to any game when even small amounts of money are on the line

Honestly gambling laws really need to be tightened up to get around the loophole that something isn't technically gambling if it isn't literally putting money in and getting money out.
