I knew a guy about 10 years ago who was ~22 and won a $75k online poker tourney. He bought a townhouse and filled it with ridiculous poo poo like a golden tee machine and two of those bar trivia megatouch machines. He went broke pretty quickly and went into foreclosure within 2-3 years of purchase.

I knew a guy who was a part time poker player/full time PhD researcher. Dude had spreadsheets detailing every single game he played and could say 'yeah, I'm making 30k a year with a varience of X and this is exactly how much I'm willing to bet per game given these particular variables' etc etc. At that point its blurring the line between gambling and investing in your own wierd stock/company.

professional gambling provides a good quality of life for a handful of people and for everyone else it is worse than minimum wage. you might get bigger lump sums sometimes but you spend for loving ever getting them and it's more stressful than just having a regular job.

gambling can be ok if you can play as a game and arent trying to make it your way of life. it can be a way to recreate. you can play a good amount of time for $20 and you're playing penny and nickle blinds/games. it adds an element of adrenaline to any game when even small amounts of money are on the line

Honestly gambling laws really need to be tightened up to get around the loophole that something isn't technically gambling if it isn't literally putting money in and getting money out. Poor areas are just wall to wall "fish game"/"arcade"/"cyber cafes" and video game microtransactions are hooking kids on gambling in the same way ecigs single-handedly reversed half a century of declining tobacco use among kids.

Stefan Prodan posted:

idk all the regs from PITR back in the day have probably made at least like 10-20 million dollars combined off of poker since it started so it seems pretty okay

then again I think it might have closed before your regdate so whatever

That's because in addition to one big world series of poker winner hugely skewing the average a lot of them were using the forum for money laundering and also conning goons into gambling with them so they could take their money. A ton of them had a meltdown when the forum was closed because it meant losing tends of thousands of dollars that were locked up in posts at the time.

It's wild to think that the gun subforum that has been directly responsible for multiple deaths and the illegal drugs forum where every thread's first page is a wall of permabanned dead posters are still up and running but it was the online gambling one that was immediately shut down to comply with the law.

Rad-daddio posted:

I wonder if you could code a bot to gamble for you, like some kind of abstract bitcoin miner.

You are literally the first person to ever have this idea. There's no way that a lot of online poker business was actually driven by the suckers who thought they could totally game the system by feeding a ton of low stakes games into a bot that would crack the site's algorithm and let them become rich.

It's like how The Hangover was one of the best things to happen to casinos since the Texas Hold Them craze because it made an entire generation of dunning kruger cases think they could learn card counting and effortlessly get rich.
