I pulled the best and worst strikeout variances (pitching Ks - batting Ks) since 1960 and the Astros are in one hell of a window

2017 Astros: +506 (1593 - 1087)
2018 Astros +490 (1687 - 1197)
2017 Indians +461 (1614 - 1153)
2019 Astros* +410 (1410 - 1000)
1990 Mets +366 (1217 - 851)
1988 Red Sox +357 (1085 - 728)
2017 Red Rox +356 (1580 - 1224)
2013 Tigers +355 (1428 - 1073)
2018 Indians +355 (1544 - 1189)
2005 Cubs +325 (1256 - 920)
.....

1992 Tigers -362 (693 - 1055)
2018 Rangers -363 (1121 - 1484)
2016 Brewers -368 (1175 - 1543)
1969 Padres -379 (764 - 1143)
2017 Rangers -386 (1107 - 1493)
2003 Reds -394 (932 - 1326)
2013 Twins -445 (985 - 1430)
1991 Tigers -446 (739 - 1185)
2013 Astros -451 (1084 - 1535)
2010 Diamondbacks -459 (1070 - 1529)

The 1992 Tigers only struck out 693 batters in a season. They averaged about 4 Ks a game, almost a full strikeout a game less than the next lowest team. 😨

So..... Brad Hand is cooked, right? I was hoping the end of July/early August thing was a fluke but he’s been a disaster for over a month now.

Not a lot of better options out of the pen either, as Goody and Wittgren have crashed hard and Cimber can’t get outs to save his life. That bullpen was an absolute strength for most of the season and now it’s a coin toss every night 😩

Well, maybe not that much

How disheartening it must be to know you were bought for $1 and the general reaction is “the Mariners overpaid”

Bucs announcer just described Vogelbach as “like two Matt Stairs put together.”

I’ll never forget when he played for the Royals and Tom Hamilton said he “runs like he’s dragging a plow behind him”. He tries to stretch a single into a double and it did not go well

2010s Astros (3 100W seasons, 3 100L seasons)
2010s Cubs (1 100W season, 1 100L season)

2010s Twins are the only ones who could join the list if they end up with 100 this season.

Indians should have had at least 2 and maybe 3 in the 90s but they dicked around so bad in the last 2 months of 1996 and 1999 because they had the division wrapped up by the 4th of July.

The WCW rasslin' thread has been talking about Ted Turner, which has caused me to look back at stuff from when he bought the Braves in January 1976.

Turner bought the Braves for $9.5-10 million (both prices were mentioned). He had purchased television rights in 1972.

At that time, Turner was rather frenetic with his ownership. He liked publicity for himself and didn't care how he got it. Spurred by a public relations department just as wild as he, Atlanta tried everything during that time to get people to show up. The player nicknames on the back of the jerseys was a PR idea that Turner adored, especially as he could use Andy Messersmith for publicity. Messersmith was #17, so his nickname was determined to be Channel. Channel 17. It didn't take long for the National League to notice and put an end to it. Precisely the attention Turner and the team wanted.

Another move was also consideration in January 1976. Turner floated the idea of renaming the Braves to the Eagles. He said it would match the bird aesthetic of the Hawks and Falcons. Also, he wanted a fresh start for the team.

I haven't read to see if there was backlash against the mascot change, or if it was merely Turner trying to get people talking.

He also executed the most batshit crazy move ever. On May 11th, 1977 he put his manager on “temporary leave”, slapped on a uniform, and named himself interim manager. He managed one game and was told by the commissioner to get the hell out of the dugout.

Best part of the whole thing? From SABR:

“Veteran knuckleballer Phil Niekro, the Braves’ scheduled starter, jokingly asked Turner, “Ted, what spot you got me hitting in today?” Turner’s response was, “Hell, I don’t know. … You’ve been around here long enough. Hit wherever you want to.” Fortunately, Niekro knew better and informed his temporary skipper, “I don’t think that’s going to work, Ted. Put me in that ninth spot.”

I'm worried that between the minority owner of the Indians buying the Royals and missing the playoffs that the Dolans will go full firesale. Sure glad I got my Lindor jersey this year.

I can’t see it happening. They have an absurdly good, young, and cheap pitching staff, Kipnis’ money is coming off the books, the Bauer/Puig money is coming off the books, and they have controlled talent in Roberto Pérez, Oscar Mercado, and Jose Ramirez. They’ll pick up Kluber’s option and be sitting at around $80 million once Lindor gets his arb raise. They still have to address the outfield and the bullpen, but there’s no way they tear it down.

Now if they’re out of contention in July next year (which is highly unlikely given the division and the AL itself) they’ll move Santana and Kluber and field offers for Lindor and Jose Ramirez. But even then that pitching staff will keep them afloat - they missed nearly full seasons from Kluber and Carrasco and significant time from Clevinger, had ZERO production from the outfield for most of the season, and still hung in there til the final weekend.

Except we actually DO have it? Clevinger, Civale, Bieber, and Plesac by themselves held this team in contention for months... and we still have Kluber and Carrasco coming back next year and a serviceable Plutko as a backup option.

The Indians need to sign or trade for outside impact talent to supplement their good players and they probably will not do that. 2019 Indians = 2016 Pirates.

You.... you know we’ll finish with 90+ wins, right? Yeah the division is bad but that comparison isn’t even close.

Randy Johnson still remains my favorite pitcher I've ever watched. Felix is up there but Prime Randy with his mullet was just a delight.

One of my all time favorite non-Indians baseball moments was him going down to the bullpen in game 5 of the 1995 ALDS and then coming in to an insane crowd reaction. They started yelling the moment he walked down to that bullpen and went apeshit when he came to the mound.

That and when he struck out the last batter of the game to beat the Angels and send the Mariners to the playoffs in the first place.
