The winner takes home all of them. I guess BBC can't have prize shows, but there's a loophole for if the prizes are provided by the contestants itself it's okay. The early seasons are interesting because nobody had quite figured out what the show was, so some of the contestants would bring in actual personal belongings, but once the show gelled it became almost entirely gag gift things.

It's a wonderfully wholesome show and it's all on youtube.

There are wonderful moments when someone comes up with a game breaking solution and you get to see the reaction shots from the other comedians.

Ah that explains why the British version of "The Price is Right" - "Mum Spent What?" - is so much less exciting. One of the contestants always has an advantage when guessing the price because it's their washing machine, or their kid's toys or whatever. It does raise the stakes quite a bit in the final round when only one contestant gets their car back.

I could never get into Taskmaster. I probably watched too many Japanese game shows that work in similar ways, because it always seemed too tame/restricted, for lack of a better term.

The BBC can absolutely have prize shows, it has several gameshows with cash prizes. However, the BBC has almost nothing to do with Taskmaster; Its made by an independent production company, was originally commissioned for and aired on a channel called Dave (which, and here is the BBC link, is part of the UKTV family of channels which are owned by the BBCs commercial arm). Dave makes very little original content (though they have been making more, partially I think because of the success of taskmaster), mainly being repeats of panel shows during the evening and poo poo like american pickers and top gear through the day. Then once it was successful, Channel 4 (who had passed on commissioning Taskmaster when it was originally being shopped around) bought the right to broadcast it instead of Dave.

The contestants bring the prizes as one of the tasks because a) its cheaper than providing prizes, and b) its funny. Its really not any deeper than that. The contestants are all celebrities (mainly comedians) so its not like they have a great need of a new toaster or something anyway.

One interesting thing though, from what I gather Taskmaster is considered to be a game show rather than a panel show, which means that whoever wins could, if they wanted to be a dick about it, legitimately keep the other contestants belongings. Romesh Ranganathan (who was on season 1) has a story about the winner of one episode winding him up about not having to give him his wedding ring back after he put it up as a prize and lost. This also makes Josh Widdicome putting up a signed blank cheque as a prize in one episode an incredibly stupid move on his part!

Its pretty much my favourite show on TV and I am far too into it. If anyone is looking for something funny that doesnt require a lot of concentration (because of the whole 2020-21 situation) I heartily recommend it. Not the US version obviously, no idea what the gently caress was going on there.

Joes completely broken voice, and Jon Richardsons immediate reaction to it, make this one of my favourite bits of TV.

for the taskmaster fans, there's also a podcast now hosted by Ed Gamble, and they do an ep per tv episode. often one of the contestants of either current or previous seasons is the guest. that's on both youtube and whatever podcast service you prefer.

If in US or Canada it's all available on the Taskmaster YouTube channel. Aside from season 9 I think. But I assume it'll be uploaded starting after season 11.

Yeah, I would much rather have that crap on my wall (where it's trivial to clean off) than in my drain.

(That said, I probably would have bought a drain snake so I could use it more than once.)
