I found out when I tried the ancient vampire route that you can do that whole bit and the obviously superior route. After you deal with Orianna, Regis asks very pointedly if you're really sure you still want to do the stupid thing and bother an ancient vampire. At that point you can abort and free Syanna from the fairy tale place. So the 'optimal' route is choosing to go after the ancient vampire, then changing your mind.
