Imagine doing a gofundme for a Cessna 172. You get enough money for 3 F22 Raptors. You immediately taxi the each F22 into parked fuel trucks, destroying them in turn. Worst of all: no LTI, so you keep the gofundme up. All the while, you berate anyone criticizing your decision-making, while simultaneously boasting that the only one who could compare to you as a pilot would be Jimmy Thatch, or maybe Chuck Yeager (maybe). EDIT: That hypothetical proposition would arguably be a better use of the money. IAbsolveMyself fucked around with this message at 23:10 on Sep 16, 2020 |

And you have to pay for shipping which includes buying shipping boxes. This is like basic business stuff. I have a weird question. I moved into my own place a couple months ago and for a few days now I have noticed a cat chilling around our garden (shared with a few other houses and accessible from the road but there's also empty stables and buildings around) At first I thought it's propably the neighbour's cat but whenever I go outside in the evening or night that cat is around and not in any house. She's very friendly and open to humans, or at least me it seems, and wants to cuddle all the time but she has no collar (dunno if that's a regular thing with house cats). Looks very clean and not super skinny either. Maybe I'm just misinterpreting the behavior but if she has a home I wonder why she keeps coming to me and sitting outside my door at the middle of the night and almost falls asleep in my arm (or on my head when I squat down to pet her and she jumps on my back like a parrot) I never really cared for pets but I am wondering if the little rascal has a home or is living outside (winter is coming) and how I best go about the whole thing. Do cats just randomly approach people outside like that when they have their own place somewhere? I have read that this is how people occasionally become cat owners but it seems a bit surreal to me. I didn't try to let her into the house but I'm pretty sure she would have come in if I didn't close the door behind me.

Combat Theory posted:I have a weird question. Seems like you made a friend! Cats can be friendly for many different reasons, and it's not a sure sign one way or another. There's a few steps that you could take to make sure it is well taken care of. First, see if it's microchipped. If it will follow you into the house and you can get it into a cat carrier, take it to a local vet. Call in advance and ask if you can bring in a stray to be chip scanned. Most cats have been getting microchips implanted just under the skin for a while now. A vet will have a little scanner that can detect the chip, and the chip will be registered to the owners and likely have a phone number so you can get in touch with them. Second, if you have have a Nextdoor account, that's one of the few uses for that website - if you can get a picture of the cat and post about it. Otherwise Facebook and Craigslist will have local "lost pet" sections. Check every day or two, see if anyone responds to your pictures. Third, keep it for a few days. See how it behaves indoors. While you do this, you could put up physical "found cat" posters or show pictures to your neighbors. If nobody claims it within a few weeks, it's probably nobody's cat. Sometimes people turn up, but it's rare after a month or two. If it does belong to someone, you should return it (obviously) but ask them if they'd be willing to keep it inside from now on. Cats really shouldn't be outdoors, they're bad for the local wildlife, and it's dangerous for the cat. If the cat turns out to not belong to anyone, then you've got a choice about whether to keep it. If you do, you should take it back to the vet to get it spayed or neutered, as well as tested and vaccinated for feline leukemia and feline influenza virus (FLV and FIV). This will usually be a couple hundred dollars, but there may be subsidies or local orgs that can help if it's too expensive, depending on where in the world you are. Even if you don't keep the cat, if possible, you should still do the spay/neuter and vaccinations. Controlling feral cat populations is tough. (My wife and I are our neighborhood stray cat people, let me know if you have any questions!)

Ahhh yes I have heard of the ID chips. I'll see about it in the coming days. She's got some hecking claws though (my arms and shoulders are thoroughly marked now - think I'll have some explaining to do to miss CT next time I see her) so I think I'll have to prepare some towels to save my chairs and the like should I take her in. She didn't do any angry scratches though she just jumped on me got comfortable and started rubbing on my shirt and arms but with, I guess, some claw action? It was cute and I don't really mind it. I'm generally careful about picking up cats I know many cats don't like that but this one was super chill at that. Could pick her up and hold her in my arms and chest that was when she almost fell asleep (and managed to grab my biceps - ouch) If it all ends up with me keeping the cat ill propably do the horrible thing of letting the thread decide on a name. I don't mind a couple bux in medical bills for a feline roommate. Combat Theory fucked around with this message at 02:54 on Sep 17, 2020 |

Sounds like she likes you a lot! Cats sometimes flex their claws repeatedly when they're happy, it kinda looks like they're kneading bread. As for the claws, you can safely trim cat claws pretty easily with a specialized trimmer you can get at any pet store, or just a nail clipper, if you're confident you won't cut too deep. Some cats do need to build up trust with the person doing it, some are totally chill very quickly, depends on the cat. The cat will resharpen their claws over a couple weeks, it doesn't hurt them at all. Some vets will do it as well, if they do grooming appointments and aren't strictly an animal hospital. Just ask when you call about getting the chip scanned. https://youtu.be/o1XisXBVe8g

Combat Theory posted:I have a weird question. Before you start doing goofy stuff like temporarily shutting the cat in your apartment or whatever, ask your neighbors about it. This doesn’t have to involve going door to door. When you pass a local in that garden or out in front of your house, just ask them what they know about the cat. If it’s been around for long I guarantee it has fans that can tell you what’s up. I don’t know if it’s common practice where you live, but most neighborhoods around here have informal community mailing lists. You can ask a wider audience there if such a thing exists.

Yeah a lot of people just let their cats roam the neighborhood, so there's a solid chance its just your neighbor's cat being friendly. If it looks hungry then take it in, otherwise ask around.

Alright asking the neighbors first, then the vet stuff if no one knows the cat. It's not like there are many households here, maybe 3 nearby and 5 before the main road. This is one of the once a farm not a farm anymore kind of complexes that grew into several unconnected households so there are many places and installations where a cat could live without humans and just feed of whatever rodents come across (I have to keep a shovel around to fend off the rats when I go to the garbage storage in the dark) that's why I was worried in the first place she might actually not have a household. When I adopted my stray I first bought a collar and wrote my phone number on it and let the cat continue to wander the neighborhood for a few weeks.. no one called so then I checked for a chip. Also cats don't need their claws clipped... don't do that it's also easy to hurt them as they have big nerve structures inside them that sometimes go to the tips. Let them keep their claws the length they like they know how to maintain them just fine without help. Kneading is normal happy behavior. Mine likes to walk on a leash and goes on road trips and hikes and does normal dog tricks like 'sit' and 'wait' Being a goof Out on an adventure

Don't do it. If the cat is scratching your furniture, buy a scratching post, put some catnip on the post so they learn to go there. You can use a spraybottle of water to discourage things like scratching, although cats sometimes don't take well to negative reinforcement. But, you can totally clip the ends of the cats claws with nail clippers and that's safe as long as you don't go too far. My cat didn't like it at first, but now he doesn't care and lets me clip all his nails like he loves it. Thoatse posted:Mine likes to walk on a leash and goes on road trips and hikes and does normal dog tricks like 'sit' and 'wait' My last cat would come or sit on command like a dog, if you're really patient and loving you can train cats to do anything. It just takes longer than dogs. My current cat is a one eyed cat I took in as a stray, and he's a little antisocial sometimes but I forgive him because I don't know what kinda poo poo he went through earlier in life. He was in bad shape when I got him. He's fat now though and I do take him on walks with a harness sometimes.

Yeah please please do not declaw your cats. It's hosed up that it was common practice for so long. Trimming is perfectly fine if the claws are an issue, if not, then it's not really important. Doesn't hurt the cat either way.

This cat talk reminds me of the time back when I was living at an apartment. I noticed this little bitty kitty that would roam around my apartment (figured she was birthed from some strays - there was a number of them around). The kitten was real shy at first, but I was able to slowly befriend it by getting on my belly and slowly crawling towards it and such. Eventually, I could just walk up and pet her. My little bud to give a friendly pet to as I was going to and from work. Well, one day, when I come home and went inside the apartment she followed me inside. 7 years later, and she still puts up with me!
