Season 3 is here! I've thrown together a quick OP so I can watch the latest episode, let me know if there is anything I should add! I had no idea what to do for the thread title. Here is a great summary of everything that happened last season! Vincent Martino and Frankie Martino (James Franco), identical twin brothers who operate a bar for the mob. In season 2 they expanded into the brothel and club fields at the behest of Mafia capo Rudy Pipilo (Michael Rispoli). Vince has become tired with the lifestyle and wants out, while Frankie has gotten more involved in the porn business and, as a producer, sold shares of Red Hot to two competing mafiosos. Eileen "Candy" Merrell (Maggie Gyllenhaal), an independent (no pimp) sex worker trying to provide for her son while navigating the dangerous streets of NY. Last season Candy became involved with pornography and showed a flair for setting the scene. In season 2 she had become a more prominent member in the industry, focusing on feeling rather than the traditional wooden acting. Abigail "Abby" Parker (Margarita Levieva), a college student from a wealthy family who strikes up a relationship with Vincent following his separation. Last season she took a job at the bar and developed a relationship with Ashley, on of C.C.'s girls, and helped her get away from her life as a sex worker. Ashley died last season after trying to help workers get out of the life, Abby and Vince often have a rocky relationship. Bobby Dwyer (Chris Bauer), brother-in-law to Vince and Frankie. A former construction foreman turned brothel operator, Bobby quickly turned from family man into philanderer. Bobby runs a brothel and has separated from his wife. His son (James Gandolfini's son irl!) has started to follow in his footsteps. Last season Bobby and Frankie killed CC. Paul Hendrickson (Chris Coy), bartender and good friend of Vince and Abby. Paul operates his own bar now. Lori (Emily Meade), a new sex worker in town. Lori began working in pornography in Season 1, much to the anger of her pimp, CC. Last season she stared in a successful film and separated from CC, however she was still very afraid of him, not knowing he is dead. Frankie informs her, however, and she ends Season 2 happy. Chris Alston (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.), an NYPD patrolman who moved up the ranks to detective after protecting The Company from a news story his girlfriend was preparing that would have hurt the NYPD's reputation. Alston is a guy who is good at heart, though he did cover up the murder-suicide of his former partner last season. Tommy Longo (Daniel Sauli), Rudy's calm mannered enforcer. Tommy is very likable, however is capable of extreme violence. Big Mike (Mustafa Shakir), one of Vince and Frankie's workers/ enforcers. Big Mike mostly works at Vince's dance bar. Black Frankie (Thaddeus Street), named so as not to cause confusion with Frankie Martino, is a guard/ enforcer working at the brothel. Harvey (David Krumholtz) is a porn director/ owner of a production company. He and Candy often fight, but have a deep respect and friendship with one another. God I love this show and this third (and final) season really snuck up on me. I really dug season 1 but season 2 was fantastic and I have high hopes for this one. Last season Larry Brown was the standout character for me, his enthusiasm for acting was just infectious. I can't wait to see where everything is gonna end up even if I know the broad strokes of what happened in history.

I completely forgot about this show despite S1 being amazing. I'll have to binge season 2 some point soon and revel in the wonderful wigs once more.

I just finished the first episode: it continues to be fantastic. Things are darker and dirtier than ever, with the HIV/AIDS epidemic hitting. I think there is going to be a lot of sadness this season.

My favorite Blondie song in the intro, nice! No Darlene or Larry Brown. Are their stories over? Herc as the transit cop was lots of fun.

Paul and Luke Kirby's character are gonna be hit hard by the AIDS epidemic. It's not gonna be pretty.

My only, sole complaint with the episode was that the awesomeness of the soundtrack sometimes eclipsed the dialogue. It didn't help that I had to sing along too. It is so, so good to have David Simon back on the air.

This one was a roller coaster; the enormous low of Candy and Melissa's "first time" conversation at the start - it starts funny, then it's suddenly not! - followed by so many solid light segments and one-liners ("Then you can make your own fuckin' chicken soup;" "I mean, I can never talk business on this thing - but, poo poo, I had to have it!" Eileen's directorial effort, a Martino family Confirmation.) It got me to the point where I knew we were just being setting up for heavy stuff, and sure enough that was followed by Paul's revelation about not being tested, Bobby's blithe dismissal that he don't got the Bug and never will, and scene after scene of "Frankie, man, what are you doing." Although I expect Rudy to get clipped before Frankie does, especially knowing how things go for the Five Families in the 80's. Also, between Paul's trip to the shore last season and Gene visiting the club tonight, this show's got a real motif about gay men passing through intense colored lighting to enter the realm of free sex. And where the gently caress is Larry JethroMcB fucked around with this message at 03:37 on Sep 17, 2019 |

The girl in the massage parlor straight up asking Bobby,"What do you actually do here?" absolutely cracked me up, since he didn't have a single loving thing to answer with beyond,"I gently caress a bunch of the girls for free." It's weird, I had started to get the impression that in spite of their initial impressions in season 1, it was going to end up being Vincent who gets killed/hosed up by the mob etc because Frankie seemed to actually be starting to develop some actual ability, but then this latest episode he tears a mobster a new one in "public" and he's also dealing with coked-up idiots (and is one himself) and child pornographers so now things seem to be see-sawing the other way. Also Candy's new boyfriend is way too chill and I'm dreading the other shoe dropping.

I don't know anything about the actual history here but I have some predictions/speculation I want to throw out there: Rudy being fed up with Frankies drug dealing ways, puts a hit out on him. Tommy, instead of killing Frankie, sells Rudy out to Gotti because he likes being in the drug business. Thus the era of the nice guy gangster ends.

Agreed, I think that this ends with either Frankie or Rudy dead or both. That was another great episode. I feel so strange after watching a David Simon show because while they don't always have the excitement or drama of other shows, they are basically short vignettes of characters so realistic that they feel like genuine people. I feel much more satisfied with them. After this show I've decided that I'm going back to actually finish Treme

Yeah, there's the bummer episode I've been expecting all season (doubly so after that "everybody having a good night out on the town and getting laid" sequence.) And there's still half the season to deal with the fallout. Vince, get back with Zoe Kazan, those 80's feathery bangs are working overtime for her

Of all the real-world characters they could have involved with this show, I would not have expected Andrea Dworkin. But I thought the actor did a great job, and that was a very strong and effective argument with Candy. So what does Rudy do now? Frankie was, technically, one of his guys even if he was a pain in the rear end, and I wouldn't be surprised if Vincent turns to Rudy for payback.

I don't know if see Vincent demanding it, as he's normally pretty level-headed and would understand that Frankie lived his life constantly pissing people off, however based on my knowledge of crime media Rudy can't have his people getting killed in the streets, even if it was caused by an off-the-books type situation. Frankie has had a target on his back since the first episode and I really cannot believe it took him this long to die. I thought they would do it simply due to the pain in the rear end filming James Franco would cause.

Poor Frankie. After scraping by for so long he appeared to carve himself out a decent little life, both professionally and with an apparently stable family. But he couldn't help being Frankie. It was obvious to the audience the danger he was putting himself in yet he never saw it coming.

Thought the back and forth between Dworkin and Candy was really well done. Meanwhile I felt almost nothing for Frankie, dude's been begging to get murdered for virtually the whole series, but especially these past few episodes. I'm more worried about the fate of Black Frankie, blackjacked trying to save a guy's life with a bic pen tracheotomy

There's that gutpunching episode I was bracing for. Feel bad about both Frankies, god drat. I have a feeling something terrible will happen to Big Mike as well which would mean all my favourite characters are gone. It's kind of crazy how much whiter the cast has gotten and I don't think that's unintentional. Meanwhile Vinnie and Bobbie will end up as real estate magnates or something. I also saw the following HBO video and David Simon makes a passing mention that they are based on real brothers, and that (Potential spoiler from RL)the real Vinnie is still around, or at least was long enough for Simon to meet him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjKLU_nMbfg

The Andrea Dworkin/Candy scene was fantastic, I was fully expecting Candy to come in and hit them with a big powerful speech and instead she took some really hard personal blows and basically made zero headway, but not in a way that felt like it was just a stubborn refusal to listen.double negative posted:I'm more worried about the fate of Black Frankie, blackjacked trying to save a guy's life with a bic pen tracheotomy Seriously, poor bastard is so competent and effective but of course all those guys see is some black dude who rushed into the hotel and supposedly stabbed some old white dude in the neck.
