Watching this Norsemen show on Netflix and it's moderately funny but holy poo poo is it fashy and problematic. The villain is a closeted gay man who makes the village disarm themselves in the name of art and culture. Just 4 episodes in so far but yeeeeesh.

I thought he was coded as a pretentious guy, not necessarily gay, while the rest of the show is Norwegian office politics but with vikings. It probably doesn't translate as well as it should. I still agree it's just moderately funny though.

I've started watching The X-Files on a whim and as a non-American I find it very interesting when you consider all the Q stuff, the mole children and government agencies competing in byzantine power struggles some of which has a basis in reality. It's interesting to see this current of suspicion of the government, grand conspiracies woven in with the supernatural in American culture.

Seemed to be pretty highly gay coded to me, as is the bigger-baddie Jarl. Then all the jokes about rape on top of it. If they're going for Its Always Sunny in Norway, there needs to be a bit more leaning into acknowledgement that the characters are all terrible people, not just the gay ones.

I've been thinking a lot lately about Richard Hoftstadter's "The Paranoid Style in American Politics". It's like a playbook for the current moment: I've had friends who seem to default to assuming anything that comes out of authority or government is untrue and that the opposite is probably true: the earth is warming, it's cooling; the virus is fake *and* masks make the fake illness better; Trump is benignly irrelevant, there are darker, malevolent forces afoot in the Democrats, antifa, BLM ...

It's been a while since I watched it but as far as I can remember none of the characters were good people or likable. Not saying it isn't Fascist in accordance with the famous and correct Phil Greaves tweet.

It's a road trip movie with some zoomers trying to figure out where to enlist for the Venezuelan Army.

He peeps on men sitting on toilets, he keeps gay porn, enjoyed being raped by another man and is awkward around his wife. He isn't coded gay, he's explicitly written as gay in big letters.

They even made a Call of Duty about it, which was bad, but not as bad a Homefront, so the theory is solid

I watched The Old Guard, and perhaps the most unintentionally funny moment of that movie was the CIA guy having a record of Andy being on the opposite side of every historical incident the CIA has ever been involved in, and that that was a good thing that improved the world.

Covid has demonstrated that our society is so precarious that any disruption of our maladaptive routines is catastrophic to the stability of the system and a red dawn scenario is far more plausible than I have historically imagined

The original two parts of Money Heist (originally released with the non-dumb name House of Paper) own bones. Fun heist action and drama, correctly recognizes that the crooks are the good guys, goes full-throated ACAB by the end.

Are the two extra Netflix seasons as pointless and extraneous as they sound? Parts 1 and 2 told a complete story, so any extension feels like a pointless cash-in.

I didn't think that part 4 (or the second part of part 2) was out yet, but based on part 3, there's definitely diminishing returns but I still enjoyed it.

Yes, absolutely. 100%

Rollerball nails the arbitrary viciousness and freedom-through-consumption of the corporatist society.

Similarly dystopian films like deathrace 2000 often leave the viewer wondering how we get there from here but Rollerball warps the tendencies of our ruling class just enough to connect the dots.

At work the other day, we were talking about how we were on the covid front lines but our boss has been working remotely since March and I found myself saying "there are no rules at all" to everyone's nodding approval.

you jest but its pretty clear at this point that obama sets his mind to achieving arbitrary real world achievements the same way most of us would become obsessed with arbitrary xbox achievements

theres a thirty rock scene that doesnt seem to have been youtubed where tracy jordan asks whoopi goldberg for advice on how to get an egot and its really weird how whoopis advice comes off as completely sincere even though jordan obviously only wants the egot for selfish vanity reasons and doesnt give the slightest poo poo about art

as i recall that particular episode ends with jordan taking down his depressing oscar bait for some homeless shelter screening to replace it with a terrible eddie murphy pastiche because which the homeless people love because lol stupid poor people only liking obvious garbage am i right

scenes like that in tv shows and movies that talk down to the perceived taste of lesser humans always come off as weird and funny as all hell in retrospect because the examples they pick are always genre movies which seemed popular at the time but that died out within a few years because they were so terrible that nobody wanted to watch them anymore

It's because they jack off wealthy liberals in particular

The only parodies you see are of Nolan/Snyder too dark and edgy films that take themselves too seriously

I figure, perhaps optimistically, that much as the Western died and came back several times, superhero films will eventually die. But while you can tell a whole lot of different stories with the Western, we only seem to be able to tell one story with Superheroes.

to me the new star wars films seemed to be kind of like game of thrones in that even if you were excited for the first few iterations of it, the last one was so obviously bad that we all collectively got amnesia about the whole thing
