That's something else that these, besides that these 23+ movies have maybe 5 lines that get quoted between all of them, they're are no stand out set pieces like running from the boulder, ripping the heart out, choosing the wrong grail, the Death Star trench run, the Canal chase from T2, anything from Aliens or any of the other rich stones of well cinema that have been absorbed into culture. It's like the opposite of Avatar that made a billion dollars but left no pop cultural foot print, these Marvel movies make so much money and god knows their toys and other related things are everywhere but nothing from there movies themselves have entered into our cultural history like these other scenes have. Maybe the elevator fight from Winter Solider?
imo they're great for plane-rides and that is the only time i ever really sit down and watch em because on a 5-12 hr flight you can bang out a solid 2-6 of them, each way and helps you pass-out

I think Ragnarok is a legit good movie
thor ragnarok is a legit good movie, but mostly bc the cast loving nails it with hemsworth and goldblum just loving around having fun, and Taika Waititi is extremely funny and talented. anyone else in the director's chair and it'd have been boring and forgettable as thor 2. it's good enough that it works on it's own outside of any marvel attachments (and the few marvel attached parts actually drags it down a bit). it manages to never take itself seriously but avoiding the trap of self-referential "haha we know we're not trying to be serious cuz its bad  !!" that many ones fall into trying to be to pomo whedon-whatever garbage or w/e its called.
It's not so much a problem that they exist, as i said, they make very good filler to kill time on an airplane ride, or I presume if you have kids its a way to shut them up for 2 hrs. It's more the overall industry has consolidated and turned into a stagnant boring algorithmic-focus-tested behemoth that doesn't actually do much else besides reboot, prequels, live-action/3d remakes, and more reboots and sequels of poo poo that once worked 5-20 years ago. Like yeah there's still some good movies coming out: Midsommar, Blade Runner 2049, sicario, Get out, sorry to bother you, John Wicks, Grand Budapest Hotel, and stuff are v good, but a) they're usually small production work or the last remaining directors with talent to have enough pull to get their own pet-projects funded (villeneuve, tarantino, alfonso cuaron, del toro, etc), and b) very far and few between. even though there was a lot of bad stuff being made before, at least it was more novel or fresh and a one-off from the getgo. it definitely feels like we get less movies like Children of Men/No Country for Old Men/Will be Blood/Pitch Black and such than we used to.

reason annapurna failed is because the major studios effectively control the distribution system it has nothing to do with actual consumer demand
It's this, but also tbf in a small distribution you do have to take into account tastes. Like Vice, i'm a radical gay space communist leftist and i don't have any particular desire to pay money to see a movie about a loving war criminal, which because ive been trained over 3 decades of neolib center-right hollywood that they're predictable, is gunna suck him off and portray him as a Flawed But Good Intentioned Guy. i would imagine most of the smaller-movie goers probably thought the same thing I did.

it gratifies to me to read that actually i thought i was the only one who reacted that way but thats because i have to get most of my movie related feedback from the entertainment press which is poo poo unsurprisingly
it also didnt help that i hated the big short a lot the more i thought about it the movie is incredibly unnecessarily condescending to its audience and entirely too sympathetic to its main characters who by any reasonable definition were vultures profiting over the economic destruction of the rest of the country
never seen the big short but i figured that would probably be the case is portraying main guys as lovable reasonable goofballs who just happened to be ___. it's always the loving case

Speed Racer is my favorite "get super high and let it wash over you" kinda movie
i just watched that for the first time on a bunch of edibles a couple weeks back and holy poo poo yeah, it loving owns and easily in a favorite list now. i dunno how i went 12 years without seeing it

i'd hold out hope for martin to do better in the books
at least jordan was still making poo poo up till he died i think. grmm literally hasn't. there was an entire tv show that started adn finished and during that time he couldn't even put out one book while there was probably most motivation to do so to hurry up and not let it get ruined and in the pop culture sphere. the one book he did just before its launch was also lazy rear end

E: For real - the viewing experience may be more comfortable at home, but you’ll never match the energy of a live audience during something like the original Lord of the Rings films, or the joy of taking a very inadvertently revealing survey (stoned af) because the studio badly wanted to understand what sort of freaks were paying money to go see Cats
yeah. we have this small-time local olde theater that has tables and couches along with seats and has an attached restaurant that has servers bring drinks and pizza (and it's pretty good 'za) to you. it's smallish and tech isn't very good but it's cozy and always a good crowd that makes it way more enjoyable. i generally don't enjoy the AMC Experience too much because i find those feel sterile even with fancy tech and almost zero reactions or anything happening.

its probably a small portion of the fanbase of these movies that make a billion dollars every release but theres definitely lots of these freaks around. theres so many thinkpieces and poo poo that cater to them
this. there's going to a percentage of psychos for most anything; and especially wider when they have a massive audience making bazillinga $$ a year. it just so happens most of them are on twitter and even these very forums.
disney definitely purposefully stokes the culture war fire every single time they have a major release. its sexist to not like captain marvel. racist to not like black panther, etc. wildly effective marketing scheme i guess

anyway i watched malignant and it was like 20 minutes too long but otherwise pretty fun and the ending is very funny. for all the 80s, giallo and raimi references it reminded me the most of weird self aware intentionally lovely 90s slashers like wishmaster and leprechaun
is it worth watching if you dislike self-aware intentional lovely stuff like sharknado? i prefer sincerity, regardless of 'campy' levels, 70s-80s horrory stuff more. i don't like stuff that's more like directors going oh hahah ya bro i also watch mst3k, u like that ref?? lmao this is so bad am i right??

alright sounds good enough, i'll give it a whirl at some point here since there isn't much else. 2021 is mostly dire for movies but I loved The Green Knight and Pig; Nobody was decent enough flick, and Night Drive was surprisingly good for a no-budget movie. Free Guy was ok, better than I expected, and felt very early 2000s.

im honestly scratching my head as to why theyre even still around their whole gimmick was weird programming in unusual timeslots and we now live in an era where we can watch weird programming at whatever stupid time of day we want
yeah pretty much. that said the ~2003 - 2009-ish period was golden age of AS. just a ton of weird experiment (often stoner but not always) shows that was great to put on after some intoxication late at night when the only other options are diabetes/mesothilienoma commercials, and a bunch of poo poo.. sealab, moral orel, 12 oz mouse, squid, athf, metapoc, frisky dingo, space ghost, harvey, early robo chicken, venture bros, etc
by 2011 it was pretty much a wasteland of it's former self having killed off their experimental side and mostly just running re-runs and syndicated programming. ime the more Tim & Eric
now a days you can put on whenever you want at whenever you want and easier than ever to curate own tv-like channels
edit: I guess they still have Eric Andre, Rick & Morty going on, and Primal was v good. though i imagine most people pirate it these days but maybe im wrong there

Altered Carbon was awesome, everything was stupid on 11 and the action was fun and you got to see Marc Antony’s dick again which I always appreciate. Poe was good and the part where the Mexican Granny got sleeved into a neonazi was adorable
e: Maniac was probably “better” but I remember so much more from Altered Carbon. second season sucked really really bad though I never even finished it
really too bad about s2 though, holy god what a lovely season. i would have preferred netflix just did the cancel-after-s1 thing because it was just awful.
one of the problems with the second season of Altered Carbon is that it wasn’t sexy enough. I don’t mean having sex scenes or romance I mean like dudes and ladies in the background of scenes with their gennies out like it’s nbd, super sexy outfits, showing off muscles and skin, just horny ambiance. helps keep you interested between absurd exposition and overwrought emotional scenes

my wife and I loved it. fun, which has been missing from bond for a long while. the ending is amazing too. I'd definitely say it's worth the watch.
good to know. i thought all of the craig bonds, aside from casino royale, were pretty bad and boring. and yeah they just weren't fun and got far too grimdork SUPER SERIOUS mopey; and also a lot of terrible writing. i did like casino royale a lot though

Dune seems like a movie that really wanted to be R rated but they couldn't get studio approval or whatnot. The action scenes look like those video games where swords hit like blunt objects. Otherwise the movie was gorgeous to watch.
i loved the movie, very gorgeous, but the two things that made it not reach the heights of 2049 for me was the action felt very... not so great, and it was too fast of a movie. like there was a lot of moments where the movie should have let things breathe like he did in 2049 (which was one of the best paced movies of all-time)
still, an extremely good late-night weed movie but it really needed to be 4-hours long, and i normally don't particularly love long behemoths but it really needed it and would have been so much better with just extra breathing room here and there for a lot of scenes.

in suspiria (at least the original, idk about the remake) the boarding school is a site of unfathomable evil, in harry potter it is for the most part presented as a refuge and in spite of events a safe and desirable place

god man i was looking at the release schedule is things are really grim. these giant whales that are comic book movies are now all year round because of the pandemic. no window for smaller movies to make good money without these behemoths
however, thanks to the likes of A24/annapurna, small budget movies have had a fantastic resurgence the past couple of years, and hopefully that continues. just absolute bangers made on budgets of like $1mill to $20 mill and doing extremely well because they dont have the expectation of BILLIONS of epsteinbucks profits to produce.
it's also viable because in this age, really cheap stabilizers and cameras can look as good as the big whales and editting software and such has become so good and cheap. and then on the advertising side: word of mouth, streaming services, and other specific online targetting lets them get out the word without a $5000 million buckaroo marketing blitz that Disney et. al poo poo out.
a24 is going to singlehandedly save cinema lol

Blumhouse is hit and miss but I support movies with a budget in the single digit millions. The new Invisible Man was very good.
i hope the future is death of the mega-billion hollywoo disney universal poo poo and more small-budget flicks where directors are handed a few million and told to go film whatever their vision is. instead of design-by-commitee/design-by-algo digital entertainment equivalent of soylent poo poo slurries that have been pumped out.

i wasn't talking about yearly, i was talking about all year round. lower budget movies are doing really poorly now
oh, well yeah pandemic is making most all movies do really poorly. i think they have more leeway and future on streaming services because of demand for content and being cheap enough that they aren't expected to make back $2 billion bucks. and theaters themselves are dying.
one of my favorite movies of this year (surprise, a small-budget A24 flick), The Green Knight, managed to release during a pandemic in theaters and still made 25% profit which seems pretty good all things considered
