quote:

Prolific filmmaker Martin Scorsese says Marvel movies are “not cinema” and compares superhero fare to theme parks. Speaking to Empire Magazine ahead of the release of Netflix original movie The Irishman, reuniting him with his Goodfellas and Casino stars Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, the Taxi Driver and The Departed director was asked about the proliferation of the superhero genre and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scorsese then admitted he tried and failed to get into Marvel movies, which he sees as more play pretend than genuine human drama.

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese told Empire. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

liberals like Scorcese tend to fetishize art because they lack the language to really clarify why things like the MCU are bad. It's not like Marvel movies "aren't cinema" as if they aren't works of art - the problem is that they're produced en masse as commodities first and as movies second. Their only purpose is to reify normative values without actually challenging anything, so you can argue that's bad and that it's bad cinema but you can't say it's "not cinema" as if it's somehow illegitimate.

but MCU heads are never going to be able to make this kind of argument because they've convinced themselves that actually MCU poo poo is good.
it's not just that they're incapable of challenging power, even a liberal can recognize that they also suck the creative energy out of the industry, making something like the new hollywood movement effectively impossible under late capitalism

I agree that the MCU films are products designed to make the biggest amount of money possible. I just think that maybe they wouldn't be like that if we didn't live in a society that was designed to encourage that sort of mindset and also that maybe a millionaire isn't the best person to be talking about it and also gently caress him.

That's something else that these, besides that these 23+ movies have maybe 5 lines that get quoted between all of them, they're are no stand out set pieces like running from the boulder, ripping the heart out, choosing the wrong grail, the Death Star trench run, the Canal chase from T2, anything from Aliens or any of the other rich stones of well cinema that have been absorbed into culture. It's like the opposite of Avatar that made a billion dollars but left no pop cultural foot print, these Marvel movies make so much money and god knows their toys and other related things are everywhere but nothing from there movies themselves have entered into our cultural history like these other scenes have. Maybe the elevator fight from Winter Solider?

was new york still annihilated in the tv show timeline? if so, does the show make any effort to explain whether adrian's plan was ultimately successful? are all of dr manhattan's blimps and free energy stuff still around, or are they just inexplicably absent?

how does it compare to The Boys on amazon? I really really liked that tv adaptation and i'm worried that the watchmen tv show is just going to be retreading the same conceptual space (what if super heroes were bad people) without enough to differentiate it. seems like watchmen is a smaller scope story focused more on racism?

i'm actually gonna have to watch this show aren't i.
there's only one episode out but it seems more focused on far right terror and secessionism as opposed to 'what if super heroes but bad'. there's definitely overlap between the premise, production values, and exaggerated violence and gore, but so far it seems like the boys is more of a straight comedy. i didn't think i'd watch it at all based on the trailers but it's better than it has any right to be, although it's rather unsubtle and on the nose
