But I have read the First Law first trilogy a ton of times and am entirely biased so I'm a bad opinion on the matter.

How is Joe as a writer these days? The OG trilogy was a little shakey craft wise but it feels like each of the 3 standalone was better written than the last. I havent read his YA fiction or more recent short story collection.

The Platform on netflix was a great rec, thanks. The plot does give way to the metaphor by the end but I loved the ride.

Our Don Quixote stand in has gone mad on his quest of course. But how was his message received by the administration? I think it was all futile because in a scene out of order in the middle of the film shows the head chef inspecting a cake and seeing if his servants let a hair fall into it. If that was the cake from the end was the boss trying to blame his workers to prevent solidarity between them and the people in the Pit?

Yes, there is fog o war chess where you can't see your opponents pieces until one of your own can attack it along the file or diagonal and there are various Fischer chess variations where the back rank layout is random but balanced. Im a big fan of fairy chess on a 8x10 board.

Yes! I loved El Hoyo (the Platform) when it came out and was surprised to not see it get more buzz on cspam. What did you think of the ending when the main character starts his revolution and ends up on level 666? I get the film was trying to parallel Don Quixote's descent into madness during his quest but I couldn't quite untangle what the metaphor meant.

Wasn't it supposed to be an analogy to the Comedian's descent into despair?

I thought it was a restatement on how Adrian was damned for killing people in an attempt to "save" them. The more personal nature of the story stripped the liberal idealism Adrian uses to justify himself and allows to reader to be repulsed by the murder at the end.

Resignation? Acceptance that they were as radical as could be and won all that they could in their time.

William Van Spronsen didn't feel that way as he grew older nor did Parenti. But just contrast the left-liberal response between Parenti and Chomsky. One is trotted out every 4 years to remind us the Dems are as good as our choices on the ballots get and the other toils in obscurity.

Are the new admins ready to admit closing helldump was a mistake and we need it to keep goons in check? Conversely if helldump brought about too toxic behavior its time to do the goose as they did the gander.

Sometimes the trilogy does spend too much time inside the head of flawed (insufferable) characters but I really enjoyed how the background of environmental changes and revolutionary changes constrained the path those characters can take. "Men make history but not as they please" and all that.

Imo Green Mars is the best of the trilogy and Blue the worst. Do you think you will continue on with the series?

i'm glad Elena Tonra got some exposure at least, her songs kick rear end

One thing I miss from Netflix cheaping out on S2 of Altered Carbon then cancelling it was I was looking forward to exploring Kovacs revolutionary maoish past and his subsequent disaffection from the Quellist project. There were enough hints in the first two books and the third really got into it. Shame.

Shame about killer mike

I remember watching his show about his great idea that black Americans should have their own society within America that's completely separate from any other races

Iirc El P and others in the show are like "isn't that segregation/an ethnostate?" and he's like naaaaah.
El P is like well so I wouldn't be able to work with you or eat your food? And Mike just declares him an honorary black man lol

Black Americans already being a nation trapped within a nation and thus their struggle for self-determination should include efforts for a state within the state was the standard line for the Communist Party of America before the leadership cycled out during the second Red Scare. That was also the period of the cpusa's highest membership rates for black people. So even though the idea sounds out there to a modern ears I'm not sure it can be dismissed so blithely.

If I'm living in PA now I'm still allowed to cross the state line to get a lunch in Buffalo right?

tonight I watched The Forever Purge which asks the question: what if people didn't stop doing the purge when the designated purge time is over?
The answer is that White Nationalists would use the opportunity to kill all non-whites, according to the movie.
The movie is framed through the journey of two Mexican immigrants to America because I guess they forgot America does The Purge now. Well, The Purge happens, and then it keeps happening, and long story short the Purge-based US state collapses and they move back to Mexico. I give it 3.5 stars, mildly socialist.

The Purge series has alot of little gems like that. I especially enjoyed the contrast in the First Purge of the regular working class neighborhood just throwing a huge block party and the government has to bring in the Klan and other right-wing militias to get the killing started.
