i started watching the jack ryan series and one cool thing that's happening now is that the bad guys in poo poo like this are victims of the american empire, but must still be defeated anyways. like the villain saw most of his family get blown the gently caress up by us planes in 83 and i guess now he wants revenge? i'm supposed to not sympathize with him?

there's a scene in episode 2 where some cia higher-up is like "he's got the same motivation as the rest of them: death to the west, create a new caliphate" and like... that's not a motivation, that's a goal. and jim from the office just sits there dumbly and goes "i think... he's different..."

also jack ryan is the most mary sue rear end character ever. he's a former marine and lone survivor type who got out, became a doctor of computers or money or some poo poo, went to wall street but quit because he's too "moral" and then joined the loving cia. and despite being some goober who sits behind a computer and tracks financial transactions he's totally buff and will kick "terrorist" rear end. every time someone calls him "doctor ryan" i can't help but laugh

i dunno what's worse, when movies/tv depict americans not torturing people because of course we would never be evil or when they depict americans torturing people but its actually good because hard men must make hard choices or this jack ryan poo poo where they hint at torture and saintly knight jack ryan doesn't torture, he gives the guy food and water

like they depict the actual on-screen interrogation as them just yelling at a guy for hours, but they nod towards the idea that guys in other cells are getting their poo poo wrecked. jim from the office looks at a nearby guard with an expression of deep concern over this

episode 3 of jack ryan is the most dogshit evil propaganda i've ever seen

victor, the drone pilot, starts the episode by murdering an innocent man on a motorcycle, for which his partner riot grrl gives him a dollar. he has a bunch of these dollars, all numbered for each kill. he goes to vegas to try and lose it all in a series of crazier bets that wind up winning big. he is taken back to a hotel room by what appears to be a married couple. victor has sex with the woman while the man watches and then the man beats him before they leave

in the b-plot of the episode, hanin, the wife of the terrorist suleiman, is trying to run with her kids. suleiman finds out but she escapes with her two daughters anyways. suleiman finds out and sends hanin's uncle fathi and this creepy soldier who was hitting on his daughter yazidi to get them back. the two men track them to a public market and begin chasing them, while victor and riot grrl watch through their predator drones. yazidi captures the daughters and fathi tries to think of a way to stop him, but yazidi kills him. yazidi then drags hanin off to rape her, and the drone pilot victor goes against orders, and when hanin momentarily escapes he blows up yazidi with a missile.

hanin gets into fathi and yazidi's truck, looks to her kids and says "see, i told you god would protect us"

victor leans back in his chair, obviously happy with himself for doing something good

this show is disgusting

oh yeah there's also a scene where a french intelligence agent tells jack ryan that muslims in france become radicalized because in america someone can be african-american or chinese-american, but muslims will never be french. the implication being that america is better because we don't have racism, i guess?

ten loving minutes later she asks ryan "how can you possibly work for your government, knowing what they've done?" and dopey rear end ryan is like "i think i can change things from the inside."

dont forget that they show the villain being a secular muslim frenchman in a paris banlieue and then one time he gets arrested by the racist french police for protecting his brother and goes to prison and when he comes out of prison he's magically now a jihadi and that change is never explained except for a vague sense of "oh i guess french prisons are full of muslim extremists and therefore every arab who enters a french prison becomes a jihadi"

i haven't gotten that far yet. that's stupid. suleiman carrying a grudge from his family getting blown up in lebanon in 83 makes way more sense, because that i can sympathize with

sorry to bother you owns. critically, it doesn't stop at the workers getting a union and improving their conditions, it ends on a real call to action for class warfare and depicts the proles kicking down the doors of the rich

ad astra is a clear case where the studio looked at a rough cut of the film was realized it wasn't what they paid for, but decided to just sell it as an action-adventure movie and ignore the fact that its not that

it has my favorite line and delivery of 2019 movies so far

roy spends the whole movie slowly coming to terms with the understanding that his father was not a hero but was in fact an obsessive rear end in a top hat who most likely killed a bunch of people to satisfy his deranged dream of discovering sapient life outside the solar system. and when he finally gets to his ship near the rings of neptune he comes face to face with his father who he hasn't seen in almost 30 years amid the floating corpses of the people he killed. they have a short bit of tense conversation and seemingly without prompting his father says "i never cared about you, or your mother or your small ideas." and roy sheds a single tear but its cathartic for him to know that his dad was a big piece of poo poo all along and he shouldn't worry about him anymore. it was a great moment, and made the rest of the movie worth it

personally i like the second movie and i agree with you that, superficially, the message is somewhat good. also a great bit to do is when someone mentions the whole hydra thing, just drop operation paperclip on them to blow their minds

i liked parts of civil war but as a whole it just doesn't hold together. although the best bit imo was when they're like "you got a bunch of people killed with that whole ultron thing you dumbasses" because superhero movies love to gloss over the thousands of dead and injured people that would be left behind by those battles. they even had a whole scene in ultron where they evacuate the city and they still show them that its not enough
