last time i tried to do a pop culture thread centered around propaganda messages but that was probably too specific

so you know what just talk about whatever dumb pop culture stuff you want it doesnt need to be highbrow

no spoiler tags allowed those things are really annoying in the finer arts subforums and im assuming we all just want to yell about how our cartoons arent communist enough i dont think anyone really cares about spoilers

remember when hollywood tried to make catwoman a franchise with halle berry and decided that what catwoman really needed was a bizarre half naked dominatrix outfit with cat ears that bore almost no similarity to the way the character was popularly perceived

most of the women centered movie ideas during hollywoods last woke phase were so amazingly bad its an open question whether the people making the movies really were that stupid or if they were trying to tank the idea of women led blockbusters on purpose

i miss the days when superhero movies were self consciously stupid and all the people involved realized there was nothing they could do to change that so they just hammed it up at every opportunity

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZl69yk5lEY

todays ironically stupid superhero movies are just obnoxious as all hell because they still expect us to switch gears and start crying at a moments notice because the vague father figure that made sarcastic quips just heroically sacrificed himself over contrived bullshit

London Has Fallen is a deeply fascist movie where the main bad guy is an arms dealer, but also his whole family was wiped out by a US drone bombing his daughter's wedding. At the end he's taken out in Yemen, also by a drone bombing, and debris spews across a busy street full of people minding their own business. This is supposed to be the triumph of the movie.

Actually, that in itself is a weird splitting-the-difference that Clancy does: Ryan is nominally a Democrat, except his politics are of course very Republican, up to and including Clancy using Ryan's eye-doctor wife to deliver a speech on the evils of socialized medicine.

thats a pretty hilarious inversion actually since the usual practice in tv and movies with identified party members has republicans whose views on the issues are mostly indistinguishable from democrats even when bush was still around tv writers could not to save their lives think of any way to make someone with antigay viewpoints not look like a total rear end in a top hat so they were always one of the good ones who believed that gays were people actually

in christopher nolans first big movie memento a major plot point revolves around an insurance agent proving that a guy has a mental illness rather than a physical one so that the insurance company can avoid paying for his health care

late twentieth century general fiction was shockingly bad and its honestly not that hard to see how harry potter and young adult fiction was able to displace it because just about everyone was doing nutty clancy stuff

like jon grisham is a name youd generally regard as boilerplate and even he dipped into horribly aged storylines about judges running extortion rings around gay personal ads or the cia head playing kingmaker in the presidential race because the soviets are coming back as militarist whackos who undermine free and fair elections

thats just a baked in problem with the propaganda at this point the american military has spent so long loving around in areas it has no obvious strategic interests that question just pops up spontaneously time was you could just say that the soviets were doing it first they werent but theyre not the bogeyman they once were even if the democrats obviously wish they were

idiots will see this in pop culture and conclude that the work in question must be nuanced or deep to openly present a scenario where the justification for american military intervention is presented ambiguously completely ignoring the fact that all of these scenarios are in fact happening in the real world and the reason we dont hear more about them is because theyre such obviously pointlessly evil ideas that the government knows they cant actually sell them to us

like look at korea thats a relatively benign case where american soldiers are just sort of inexplicably there and not actually killing anybody but in the aggressive lack of any actual reason for them to be there even trump gets moments where he wonders why korean military bases are even a thing

so to take the onus off of that pop culture and the intelligence services have teamed up to create a bizarre nonsensical fantasy version of north korea where commonly held knowledge frequently contradicts other bits of commonly held knowledge and the only way to maintain suspension of disbelief about how our leaders claim north korean culture works is to just avoid thinking about it

yeah im still salty about how a dumb racist stoner movie somehow became obamas grand stand for distracting everyone from how lovely the sonyleaks made hollywood look freedom and democracy on the korean peninsula what of it

they just ignore it all because it's an homage to 80s movies and in 80s movies the soviets were the omnipotent bad guys who could do anything anywhere at any time

the main weakness of stranger things is that its fairly uncritical of eighties culture and ideology which is kind of surprising since the show mostly avoids pop culture fetishism like the main references the show makes are in fairly logical contexts like dressing up for halloween or playing with dolls or dumb nerdy games of dungeons and dragons and the kids just completely forget that all of that stuff even exists when theres actually serious plot going on

i think the main strength the show has that let it get so big is that theres a fairly solid internal continuity the writers dont just pull poo poo out of their asses and expect us to accept it without question they also understand that plot twists work not because theyre random lol surprises but because looking back you can actually see the obvious foreshadowing and sometimes even figure out yourself where the misdirection is coming from and how something is about to go horribly wrong

in a sane world this would just be the bare minimum requirement for most of the fiction we consume but alas the main dominant influence right now is jj abrams who learned the worst possible lessons from the eighties

Some Guy TT

im convinced that we have trump to thank for that particular plot development you can see them try to pivot to having the soviets be just as evil as the americans in season two with that weird line about how they have to keep everything secret because what if the soviets try to reproduce it since the soviets would think having hellspawn monsters running around the world is a good thing for some reason and this is presented as if its a sincerely persuasive argument

up until that point soviet is just a code word for bogeyman that doesnt really mean anything which is how everyone saw cold war red baiting before 11/9 and what a coincidence filming for season 2 started on 11/7

of the many problems with the ghostbusters remake the most obvious one is that it didnt have any straight men or women for that matter the whole thing felt like a cartoon because everyone was trying way too hard to be funny
