W-why not turn this OC into Johnny Cage? Is Johnny Cage going to be his psuedonym after he quits the mma and gets a small role in a Marvel movie?
It's possible, given we saw a lot of characters but didn't see Johnny Cage... or did we?

This reminds me of the Tekken movie, which IIRC, sucked because they forgot to make it any fun. MK's lore is inherently more goofy and fun than Tekken's, so that'll be harder to do with this one.

Hollismason posted:

The Tekken movie cost 50 million dollars to make. This one looks like it has a substantial budget.

DC Murderverse posted:

Honestly I think $50 million was around the budget they were shooting for with this movie too. That said, effects money probably goes farther in 2020 than 2009 and WB is a much better producer than the people behind Baby Geniuses and Ghost Rider. Add in a cast and writer/director that clearly have fondness for the property and you’ll probably get a much better movie with the same price tag.
Apparently there were TWO tekken movies???

Oh my god that casting

I was just randomly thinking, is Mortal Kombat the most 80s video game series of all time even though it didn't come out until the 90s? It features a lot of things that really hit their zenith in the Age of Reagan:

1) High stakes martial arts tournaments
2) White people doing karate
3) Mystical ninjas
4) Killer cyborgs
5) Racist Yellow Peril villains
6) Sword and sorcery realms with buff dudes wearing loincloths
7) Heroic murderous cops
8) Slasher movie style extreme violence

And now the series features a bunch of actual licensed characters from the 80s.

Main character is basically a lazy OC with not very inspiring powers and movie sorta knows that so he tags in Scorpion for most of the final fight
That just lends credence to the theory that he's related to Scorpion I guess, without confirming anything either way

The original Mortal Kombat movie is coming back to HBO Max May 1st. I'm surprised it wasn't there already. Weird.

It also leads to one of the stupidest moments I've seen in a movie in recent memory. All the chosen warriors have what amounts to mutant powers that need to be unlocked through whatever dramatic moment. Liu Kang has fire, Kano has a laser eye, Kung Lao has... his razor hat. Anyway, after Jax gets his arms shattered, some Shaolin monks replace them with skinny prosthetics. He has metal arms, but they're like bones and look pathetic. When he has a dramatic moment where he needs to save Sonya, his powers kick in via his skinny metal arms suddenly transforming into bulky cybernetic arms. That's his innate ability. What the gently caress?
This sounds hilariously dumb and yet not as dumb as the Jax Arm Sleeves from MK Annihilation

Ironically enough since it's also based on a fighting game, one lesser example that immediately comes to mind of that happening is Raul Julia in Street Fighter, but goddamn I felt like Josh Lawson did it so much more than Raul Julia did.

Yeah it had that feeling that the Mandalorian has where it's just filmed on a virtual set which allows for great fantastical backdrops but you can still feel that it's taking place on a tiny stage, you know?

Also I now realize that Shang Tsung and his jobber crew should have gotten a quick intro with onscreen text like Megatron and his jobber crew did in The Last Knight, it would turn the fact that they're all jobbing into a big joke at least, lampshading the disappointment

Too bad they forgot to give that same level of detail to the terminator

No they have regular blood and a shiny endoskeleton that's treated like regular skeletons and not extra durable metal, but that's not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about a lack of attention to detail there - they missed their chance to do this

Animatronic Goro is great because in no way could they do the sort of knock-em sock-em destroy-the-garage fight the 2021 CG Goro does, so instead they get creative and have Johnny Cage punch him in the balls and then kick him off a cliff in a really wide shot. It's not really much of a fight but the Animatronic Goro and the brilliant puppeteers do such a great job selling the ball punch that's what people remember.

This, along with them using deserts and reusing sets made me think that the movie was made on a lower budget than the '95 movie at first. It really feels empty.
The 1995 movie's reported $18 million budget would be equivalent to roughly $32 million today.

The 1995 Goro animatronic cost $1 million of that $18 million alone.

Mortal Kombat 2021 reportedly had a $55 million budget. So lol
