Missed the first half. Have Fiji been playing well and worth their lead? Does it look like they'll compete in the second half?

They're playing well. Both wings tuisova and radradra are big threats having impacts. Lost their 7 who was playing well to a HIA. scrum can't hold up so they are having trouble setting a consistent platform.

Teams are out for England vs Argentina

For the pumas, Montoya starts over Creevy, and it's urdapilleta at 10 with Sanchez not even in the squad.

And for England, it's ford at 10, Farrell and Tuilagi in the centers.

I'll cheer for Argentina but hard to see them winning this game on form and depth.

Yeah they could even just do a semis and finals for the teams that come 3rd in each group.

Well hopefully Canada can put up a fight against Namibia. Unfortunately I'll be really surprised if Canada makes the 2023 world Cup at this point, it's not like things are trending up and there are few real prospects coming through. With Uruguay's improvement we will have to go through the repechage again probably.

Really surprises me that they don't have a backup of playing the games in an empty stadium in South japan or something. Feels like that would be preferable to canceling outright. Yes there are logistics involved but not that much compared to the problem canceling causes

I don't understand why they can't move the games to where they are playing Canada vs Namibia and Australia vs Georgia and play in front of an empty stadium.

Italy beat Georgia handily when they last played. The gap is still big...only japan seems to have crossed it. Georgia, Fiji, and USA are knocking on the door but missing the gap of professional fitness and top skill in key positions. To a lesser extent that's what keeps Italy from the level of the other five European nations too.

Teams are out: England's only change is Will Spencer for Heinz as bench scrum-half. For SA, it's Kolbe in on the wing and Nkosi out.

I rewatched NZ vs England tonight to see it without the craziness of the moment. On second view, it's more clear that it's a case of England playing incredible and NZ not being able to get a foothold back in the game, and not NZ being bad or needing radical changes. Rugby games are built on moments, and things like Reece's turnover after his intercept and Jordie Barrett's attempted offload in his own 22 were mistakes that directly gave up points and territory. At 60 mins NZ were down by 6 and could have found a way but England smothered them and they couldn't get back in.

Edit: and Sam Whitelock reversing a penalty by smacking Farrell in the 66th minute when they had a penalty that would have put them within 6. Sometimes it's not your day. But that's a good signal of England getting in their heads. I don't see SA falling that way.

I think SA's tactical kicking is strong enough that they should be able to stay in tight, and their tackling pressure can probably keep England from running as rampant as they did in the semi. Could see Kolbe being able to cause some chaos and create some opportunities that NZ wasn't able to.

Cheering for the Boks but I have to think England are the favourites based on that performance. Of course in rugby for whatever reasons it's difficult for international teams to have back-to-back performances like this.

I've no idea how the cap actually works, whether players get appearance or performance bonuses, and whether cap figures prorate if players move abroad or what have you mid season. Yeah it's weird. You'd never see this in North American sports, I don't know why it's so hard for Saracens or the premiership to know if they're over or not

I mean of course they are, but how is it all so opaque

Listening to the eggchasers podcast and reading a few english media articles, I'm still in a weird state of disbelief about the weird lack of professionalism and denials that saracens cheated here by hiding payments from the salary cap. hockey has a salary cap and an entire fan segment and media that follows the cap, there's even websites for it like http://www.capfriendly.com

Does it come from the weird amateur -> professional gap in rugby, where people are talking about the 'club atmosphere' and stuff here? It's just so weird to me from a north american perspective - they cheated, of course they cheated, this is like the lamest thing to be denying because they're good "club men" or whatever.

Thoughts from watching Exeter vs racing euro final:

I'm always shocked by the lack of professionalism of top level club rugby. How does Russell not take a drop goal down by 1 point dead in front of the posts with 6 minutes to go. They don't even think about it.

Nigel Owens having to argue with the tmo about the clock

Well done to the chiefs', that's quite the story going from championship to euro champions.

Well I'm happy to be wrong. Really fun game and well deserved win for the Wallabies. Hodge played great, who knew defending in your positions instead of running all over the place was a good strategy.

Well apparently Pablo Matera and a few other Argentina players have deleted their twitter because people found really racist statements from 10 years ago. Like dropping the n word on South Africans level bad.

Very disappointing. Never idolize athletes, or at least be able to segment person and performance...

sleep with the vicious
Apr 2, 2010

It's ok to hope he has changed and not want to punish him for something 10 years ago...if he is apologetic and has reformed. Because his apology is reactive to being caught, and not proactive (why would the tweets still be up, why hasn't he acknowledged it before, etc etc) it's probably right to assume that, at best, he doesn't realize how harmful his racism was, or at worst, he still holds those racist views. So he should be stood down while they investigate

It's a shame because I really liked his play. Maybe if he recants. I'm able to compartmentalize in other categories somehow like comedy or wrestling that these are mostly terrible people, maybe it's just the whiplash from the New Zealand win to this in the span of a few aedks

sleep with the vicious
Apr 2, 2010

Well the UAR has already backed down and removed the suspensions for Matera and co

Apparently the players were protesting, didn't practice yesterday or today, and were considering boycotting the game. Or at least enough of them were that Argentina rugby had to back down.

What a poo poo show.

Gotta say I'm not excited for that draw, feels like we have seen a lot of this before. But I'm sure as time gets closer I will get more excited.

I read Sam warburton and Eddie Jones autobiographies over the last few days. Both are pretty ok if you're in the mood for some light sports reading, but otherwise skippable. Both spend lots of time recapping individual games without analysis, which is boring.

Interesting items:

Warburton:
-mentions Gatland and Howley would place bets on who would win drills etc in training; obviously takes on a different light after howleys ban
-completely positive on the Welsh training camps in Poland; something about these has always really bugged me, I feel it was pretty obvious there's a bigger story here (conspiracy hat that it was Welsh doping regime catching up, but that's completely conjecture on my end)
-he describes every single serious injury he ever got and it is ridiculous
-he was 30 minutes from signing with Toulon before the WRU sent his central contract
-he says 8 of 43 of the 2017 lions players were fully committed to the point of not drinking and not going out partying
-he lions tourists get luxury watches as a gift, and it led to a serious incident of some kind when the geographical six players (Cory hill and Tomas Francis and a few others called up because they were in Tonga at the time) called up in 2017 asked for theirs

Jones:
-he is pretty up front but downplays every criticism of him, fair enough because it's his book
-his early life and Randwick days are very interesting
-he told Ben Youngs he was not fit enough by offering him a bag of chocolates in 2016
-he mentions luke Cowan Dickie and George Smith as big drinkers
-pretty much begs for the lions job at one point (and at another mentions Gatland as a future NZ coach)
-thinks the two selection errors in the 2019 world Cup final was not going Farrell over ford and Marler over mako

sleep with the vicious
Apr 2, 2010

Yeah there was clearly something very shady going on there. Probably a doping regime plus team building but I don't think we will ever know, it seems to have been memory holed pretty well but even back then there was nobody really publicly questioning it
