In a very short while a man is going to come to my house to perform some labour. You can imagine him as a plumber or a carpet cleaner or a chimney sweep or something of that nature. As an English person obviously I live in state of constant awkward awareness of class Also I am embarrassed for having to hire a man to perform the kind of masculine tasks I feel I should be capable of doing myself. I know I am going to try to act casual in a very unconvincing way as I work up the nerve to ask him if I can make him a cup of tea. Maybe I will even use the word 'cuppa'. Anyway I was wondering if folks in the US feel a similar need to offer coffee to the Mexicans who come round to mow your lawn. Or if there's some traditional beverage in Norway or South Africa etc. etc?

I recently had my roof done and bought the entire crew some donuts. Good ones too, not just the cheapo 'heres 12 crap ones in a box' kind. So I say go for it.

I am far too poor go around hiring lesser poors to do my poo poo for me around the house. When I have pizza delivered, though, I try to tip about a gram of weed on top of of the normal money tip, because trying to get somebody stoned is what I would call northwestern hospitality. It sounds like you guys hand tea out, and that’s lame, but make the offer if that’s what your culture does.

If a guy’s supposed to be all sexy in your driveway on your dime, you can’t give anybody an a drink without a garnish on it.

I always offer whatever I have laying around, OP. Typically it's a can of soda or something I made a pitcher of. I also offer snacks. Never anything hot besides coffee, but I've never been taken up on that.

Yeah offering a cold drink to people doing manual labor on your home is considered polite, even in the US, but not expected. I’d skip the tea though and just suck their dicks. Laborers LOVE getting they dicks sucked by homeowners, it’s a real treat. I’ve heard for some it’s why they got into the laboring business in the first place. Primo dome AND getting to fix a roof it’s like whoa sign me up.

Most of the time it isn't hot enough to work up a sweat anyway. You offer tea or coffee 100% of the time, and a small fraction of the time they ask if they want something cold. A smaller fraction they say no thanks. This has been a PSA sponsored by Twinings.
