Just finished the game tonight with my son. It's good? I like it, but the twist felt really contrived especially centered around Mizuki. It also felt kind of rushed compared to the first? It felt like the first game had more room to breathe and gave more attention to developing it's characters. Still good, and now I want to replay the first one.

I really like how the story escalated. It starts from investigating murder case to eventually having the heroes saving the world from a man-made virus that will drive everyone insane. The climax even involves just about every good guys fighting a huge horde of goons, and eventually having to chase a rocket by using jet-powered bike. It's so anime as gently caress and I love it

I represent the Philippines
Didn't realize it but the quiz at the start of the game has a ton of responses for various wrong answers, including: giving their last names instead of their first names, naming "kaniza", and inputting a bunch of obscure first names from the series. I'm too lazy to check myself but has anyone tried putting in Zero Escape character names?

Knowing that this voice actor is Amanda Lee / Monarch makes it even better.

Don't know why I'm reading this thread without having fired up the game but I'm grateful for all the spoilers.

And yeah I went nuts over trying to connect voice actor clues when playing 13 Sentinels.

Gonna keep my ears open for whatever you posted that I can't read for a while.

In that case, the VA is only spoiling the character's identity and I didn't want anyone to know what character we were talking about (because then you would know that character is present at the ending). But I did gently caress myself on AI1 looking up voice actors.

Oh my god. I just finished the game and it's just the loving worst, holy poo poo. I even liked ZTD fairly clumsy story but this is just the worst.

Literally every single main character has convenient amnesia just to make the mediocre twist work.
There was barely any setup for it either and whatever setup there was was just contrived, and the big twist itself is more or less a reused version of one of the twists from ZTD but with infinitely worse setup.
The filler in this one was the worst yet, I couldn't help but audibly groan every time they did the same repeated lovely unfunny jokes over and over and over ad nauseum.

I already felt like the first game was a step down from Zero Escape games, but overall I left the first Somnium Files with positive feeling but this one is just awful. The only positive thing I can say about it is that none of the new characters were as hateable as Ota was in the first game.

Sometimes I like to think that Kizzy's overly formal and polite mode of speech across the entire game was entirely setup for this one joke, and drat if it didn't land

Post game stuff: I gotta check if the dialogue for 3rd Class Cabin's Somnium is lifted word for word from 999. Because it certainly seems like it. It's funny seeing Aiba roleplaying as a college student that way out of her depths. I guess even AI needs to go to college.

Also, it's trivially easy and I have lots of time remaining left

The only one that has amnesia is Ryuki, and it's more akin to two sets of memories; one while you possess him and one while you don't. Tama is holding stuff back because she doesn't want to make him worse and Boss is being shady.

There's also quite a bit of setup of the twists the time one, the Mizuki one and the extradimensional being one.

For some of Tama's memories she also has had them removed because of Tearer messing with her memories.

It's missing the most important part, thought: it doesn't have the ladder jokes. It's quite tragic.

It's even worse, the game actively lies to you in a way that makes it seem like everyone has to be collectively brain damaged for anything to work, but in reality no one except the player is misled about anything (except possibly Ryuki), they're just incredibly conveniently not bringing up any of the million things that would give up the game. But even that I could forgive if he had figured out some way to make the reveal actually diegetic instead of the game pausing for a few minutes so a joke character can become omniscient and tell you what's going on.

There is some foreshadowing, as in Ryuki's route he is asked about the rocket that you don't see until you play as Mizuki, and then in Mizuki's route people refer to Komeiji as if he was still alive a few days ago, which he was because you're actually playing as Bibi at that point

Yeah, there are a few other things too, like the glass doll on Shigure's desk suddenly repairing itself, but all the characters are distinctly avoiding saying things like, you know, "remember when your dad died six years ago?" or the like, and it just feels really contrived in hindsight. It's like a camera trick where a character is just slightly off screen all game...

Tama and Aiba make sense as Tearer is responsible for it, and is actually a major piece of the main culprits plan to break reality.

I don't remember Bibi having amnesia though. I suppose if there was something you could chalk it up to possession like Ryuki, but it does put more handwaving on the player than a story should.

The Date amnesia was definitely dumb though. Should've killed him, would've made the new reality epilogue more impactful.

Bad Video Games
Sep 17, 2017

Date was such a non-entity throughout most of the game that they should have just kept him out.

The amnesia thing didn't bother me too much because it's AI and Uchikoshi so I expect it. Every single person in Mizuki's life being involved in a conspiracy to hide her older sister-clone from her was far worse. Also her being adopted by the Okiura's just made her abuse in the first game much more horrible.

All of that said, I did enjoy the game. Enough that I hope we eventually get a third because I just like the characters and the setting that much.

Oh right, I almost forgot.
The "helpme fsex" in rot22 was just pointless nonsense.
And also the "Oh how do we give this information to the main character? Oh just have a fortune teller give it to them, whatever." thing re-used THREE SEPARATE TIMES sucked all of the rear end, and so did the fact that the main plot twist literally only existed outside of the story to the point where it had to be explained to the camera by a meta "character".

The writing in this game was just the worst, through and through. What the hell happened?

Okay, gonna ask here because I'm at the limit of my patience (Mizuki CH1 spoilers) How the hell do you get the shoe tossing achievement on Kizuna's Somnium? No matter the way I press the arrows/buttons I can't get full charge because by the mid point Aiba loses momentum. I've tried only pressing them, holding, pressing the opposite and same direction button at the peak of the swing but nothing gets me enough charge, and I've seen a video that can do it even on the first throw.

EDIT: Nvm, complaining on the internet always works. The trick is to start holding left even before starting.

Edit2: And that's 100% completition: all achievements, all File entries, all bonus bought. Besides THAT loving think it was actually fun, specially with unlimited Psynch letting you check the joke answers in Somniums.

I'm fine. Everything's fine. There is no reason to worry.
I finished Nirvana Initiative about a week ago and rather liked it, despite its flaws. Mizuki and Aiba are great, and I hope we get more games about the two of them solving crimes together. Ryuki and Tama are okay, but the writing team is in dire need of a running gag that isn't "sex jokes". (And the whole situation just makes me wonder why nobody's had the thought that Date and Tama should be partners. It seems like everyone would be happier that way.)

The action sequences are indeed one of the game's weak points. Mostly, it annoys me that they have absolutely no sense of space. They'll show you the player character and their allies on one side and some number of enemy mooks on the other side, but none of it actually means anything. More enemies can rush into the battle from somewhere offscreen at any time, in any numbers. Maybe the player character can fight through the enemies and reach their goal, maybe they'll be overwhelmed and need to retreat, maybe they'll suddenly be surrounded only to be rescued by someone else who also jumps in from somewhere offscreen, it all feels arbitrary. You can't ever look at the situation presented by the game and have any sense of how the battle is likely to go.

Ending chat: The trick with the interwoven timelines is an interesting idea, but the implementation is just so clunky. They really should have found a better way of presenting it than "the game explains the big reveal directly to the player". It is perhaps also not the best idea to set up a mystery of "how did this apparently impossible thing happen" and answer it with "it didn't actually happen and nobody in the story ever thought it had happened". That can only be a letdown. At least there was an actual mystery with Jin Furue's body, though, with interesting implications appearing as it was gradually solved.

Then there's the secret ending with Tokiko though. I feel like it improves the game quite a bit, because now it's actually doing something with the timeline trick. Here's a character who is actually aware of the timeline weirdness, even going so far as to commit suicide in a bizarre way just to make the situation even more baffling to the player. It fits well with her ideology, too. Having the same strange crime happen twice exactly six years apart certainly sounds like something she might try out in an attempt to break the simulation.

I just don't understand why this is all relegated to a brief postgame ending, instead of being part of the main plot. When you look at the entire sequence of events, it sure seems like Tokiko is the mastermind behind the HB case. Uru came up with the TC-PERGE plan and committed the first murders, yes, but he's acting on information from Tokiko -- she told him about Naix and the simulation theory. When he presents his plan to her, she agrees that it is a good plan and helps him put it into practice, and then six years later she just stands there and watches as Amame knocks out Uru and drags him off to the slicer. It's Tokiko who arranges for Mizuki Date to find Uru's corpse, thereby making sure that she gets involved in the present-day investigation.

It really feels like there should've been a final act with Ryuki puzzling out just how much of the HB case was caused by Tokiko's scheming. How did she come up with this plan? How long has it been in the works? Of the people involved, who were random bystanders caught up in the plan, who were deliberately manipulated by Tokiko, and who were willing participants? The game could've done something with all these questions, and then it just didn't.

Just a funny av. Not a redtext or an own ok.
I kinda get why people are upset with the ending, it's weird how the whole investigation plot gets dropped completely with no resolution about halfway through. But hey, I had fun even if the game was strangely short. Wish my guy Ryuki all the best in his new life in Amami.
