Hey, I'm gonna replay this game for the first full time since it came out to play alongish with a friend. On my first playthrough I was a GIANT COMMUNIST. I've heard that the game (maybe just the endgame sequence?) can acknowledge if you have multiple, even conflicting ideologies. Anyone done this? I'm curious what kind of thing the game says and what might be a fun playthough.

IIRC the developers accounted for and advertised the possibility of opting into all of the ideologies simultaneously

On the subject of ideology at the end of the game the Phasmid implored Harry to get over Dora 'for the working class' before pointing out that it was never going to work: she was middle class. Does this change depending on your chosen ideology?

Good morning!
Just finished my first play through. Absolutely stunning game.

Between the alcoholism, burnt out memories of better earlier times, weird contradictory beliefs, and maudlin uber-dramatic pining for a woman who it turns out doesn't even rate him, this game is basically a simulator of "what if my father in law was a detective." Terrifying.

Anyway, I played through as a sensitive preset and it was very fulfilling. Ended up becoming a sober communist who says some strange things but basically got his act together. Ditched the sideburn and the Expression, revealing a sort of sad man. That was rather poignant. A lot about this game was.

I rarely replay games, but I'll give this a while and come back. It was remarkable, particularly the in-game world and the characterization. I hope we see another title in this setting someday.

Mmm. I'd interpret the past of the detective and Her as not as cold as that. Did you phone her up? She is getting on with her life, but not I think unsympathetic to Harry. But the scope to hold the different opinions is a nice part of the game.

I still kind of love my first game of 2/2/2/6 or whatever you can get close to that. Team Yellow has some sharp poo poo to say.

Many thanks for the link to Miracle of Sounds DE song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sAxhu04SlM and the suggestion of looking up BSPs songs like The Smallest Church in Sussex bspofficial appears to be their channel. And dammit, now I keep putting on the Whirling In Rags bgm just to.. soak in it.

You're probably more right than I, since I'm more or less projecting this behavior on someone I know for comedic/personal horror effect. The very thought of my FIL possessing any kind of civil authority over others is bone chilling.

I also really liked the debriefing's answer to the Puta Madre question. "Why on Earth would a mob boss work with someone as crazy as you?" Hahah, when you put it that way...

Thinking back to when I first played, I started out being totally "I am fine, yes of course I was expecting you. Yes, I am a po-lice of-fi-cer." Because you know, things were scary and I wanted some time. And I didn't want a scare the nice lady in the cool ride.

Of course this Is completely fine, but delays getting Jamais Vu and related discussions .

And it made me think. Part of the game is to be relatively failure-proof. And to let you do and say crazy things for fun.

But how often are you ever punished for making yourself vulnerable? Admittedly I'm not saying it's a deep truth about the real world, because, gently caress, there are times and places where you will totally suffer for letting the wrong people think you are vulnerable. But as a theme and mood of the game? Especially with how it might relate to how the Detective was before?

Usually this manifests in taking some kind of morale hit, but sometimes you get it back when someone else responds to your vulnerability with kindness and empathy.

It's also a pretty sad one if you have enough espirit de corps to get the bit after where it shows they're actually really worried/concerned for Harry and wondering whether to give him time to recover or just treat him as a lost cause at this point

Finally playing this. Man, what a loving game. And I haven't even cut the body down yet!

Trying to play it as a normal enough cop. Going to try and get my life together. I went high Int/high Psyche, which seems to help that path decently enough.

Next run I think I'll do a gently caress the state high Psyche Communist/drugs guy who has totally given up and is just bumbling his way through this. All in on Drama, Electrochemistry, etc.

On the topic of all that, how do skills.....work. It seems like Thoughts just happen based off time, I got confused and thought they built off skill points/exp, but they seem to go up regardless. But I'm getting a good amount of Skill Points now. Should I expect to end the game with a decent amount, or does it start slowing down and I should really be focusing down 2-3 "core" Skills. Mainly putting stuff into Empathy, Volition, Espirit right now, but I'd like to put some stuff into Physique skills for a bit more toughness, and some Intellect skills if I can.

Also are the "blank" skill points my total cap? Or my actual skill points. I'm passing checks for stuff I have no points in but I do have a lot of Int, so technically this stuff is level 5? Or is it technically I could get it to level 5. Hard to tell.

Your base current skill level is equal to your relevant stat. So if you have a 5 in Psyche, all those skills start out at level 5. If you have a 1, they start out at 1.

Your base max skill level is twice your relevant stat. If you have a 5, your base max is 10. If you have a 1, your base max is 2.

Clothes affect your current skill level. Ideas can affect your current skill or your max, among other things.

"Blank" skill points are ones you haven't spent yet. They do nothing for you. But you may want to keep one (1) in reserve, for if you need to re-roll a white skill check.

Thoughts do indeed happen over time, and more slots can be bought for skill points. I have read that accepting a thought can affect your run, even if you don't internalize it. Someone mentioned that earlier in the thread, but I forget what the example was.

There are no core skills as such. Any build is viable, [edit:] though as mentioned you can consider keeping a skill point in reserve for re-rolls. You don't need to though. You can also enable re-rolls by getting new pertinent information and/or relevant tools. Most of the white checks have such extra modifiers. If I failed a white check in my playthrough, I just went off and did something else for a while, and came back for the check later.

The higher your current skill level, the more that skill will speak up passively. There was a poster in here earlier who kept a lot of skills in reserve. As a result they didn't get many skills peeping up, and their enjoyment of the game suffered. If a skill seems interesting to you, invest more in it and you'll get more text from it. that said, some of the skills speak up more than others. Most of the Physical (red) skills say less than the others, with the noticeable exception of Shivers. Also, Volition and (I think) to a lesser extent Composure can moderate the effects of the other skills. I've read that a high level of Encyclopedia or Rhetoric can make your character a Sherlock-style obnoxious pedant, but in my playthrough I also had high Volition, so that didn't come up.

Keeping points until you hit a check can be a good idea, but I think it's a better idea to just spend everything on whatever takes your fancy. Passive checks are cooler than active checks and you aren't forewarned about those.

REDBAR INTENSIFIES
Yeah, I agree, I was dumb and didn’t even think about saving skill points for potentially hard to pass checks that I didn’t want to fail because as soon as I got enough exp to get a skill point and heard the sound effects, I either chose a skill to level up or a thought cabinet slot because something about numbers going up and dopamine and video games. But in hindsight I think that’s what the developers sort of assumed you would do, or at least I think it’s more ‘realistic’ and in character to become better at something by completing tasks as you go and not hoard points for hard checks, but I could be wrong. However, as many people have said already, the game is good about rewarding failed checks as well as passed checks in a pretty consistent way with good writing for both and unexpected funny moments where a failed check isn’t actually bad, and the character just thinks the outcome of the check is something he hosed up but to other characters would see it like a passed check if that makes sense. like the check where you shot put the ball into the ocean.

Funny that the detective hat is the most practical both from a gameplay and meta standpoint, since it has no downsides, would be a very practical hat in the cold and snowy weather, and Harry can actually more or less pull it off.
