Okay that's the little bit of the puzzle I was missing as to why Kim is so anti talking to Kuno.

I think Kim realises on some level that Harry has more in common with Cuno than he ever did.

Well you've never seen him go off at a pinball table.

On a serious note, I imagine his strict and professional demeanor is directly a result of trying to distance himself from the juvie unit, a form of over-compensating for his traumatic past and creating a distance between his past and present.

I think it's worth calling out that this is also common for gay men (I are one) and other minorities as a subconscious way of navigating a world that wouldn't otherwise take us seriously. Common criticisms of female and gay politicians are that they're "cold," "robotic," "shrill," "too rehearsed," etc., as opposed to the freewheeling "authenticity" that even utterly incompetent straight men are allowed to portray while still having their authority respected. I never was able to get to the end of the balcony man's quest chain, so I didn't know that Kim being gay was a thing, but a lot of my romantic partners in real life have spent their lives pursuing incredibly high achievement in their academic and professional careers, all seemingly driven by this internal need to be respected and valued by others. It makes a lot of loving sense to me that he would be this way.

Went through the game with every single bonus thought active and max stats. Wrote another guide:

Level 95 before meeting Ruby, 113 at the endgame. Some of it was cheating even beyond max stats though - I am perfectly content with the max legit attainable level (if you get each relevant thought asap and ignore triggering content until you have it) being slightly higher than 100.

147 real at the endgame, having bought absolutely everything, including the lamp post.

They've hosed this place. Revachol is in ruins. The kojkos and the kipts and the armataurs with their desert pygmee magic spinning tops – they've hosed it! Oranjese liberals and vespertine moneylenders too. They're all socialists, especially the women and the kipts. You have only a vague idea what this means, but it's clear that a *good strong state* must be erected upon the ruins, if any of us are to have a future. The shadowy outlines of this State start forming every time you close your eyes...

The Revacholian State will be a serene place. (You should get a drink.) A beautiful, serene place of mystery and peace. It will not be a place for women to infect with their frailty and hysterics. Or where the Semenese will be allowed to wear their pants around their ankles. All of that will go. (Once you get a drink.) The socialist professors at the École Supérieure will be fired, the editors of Trompe le Monde will have to beg in the streets. You'll pour your beer into their begging hats and laugh. My favorite part of the fascist thought is how it propels you down a spiral of depression. Not only does it sap your will every time you think fascist thoughts, it also gives you bonuses to drinking which also eats your willpower. Just perfectly on point to how miserable and hateful an ideology like that must be.

Yea, I checked the guide and there isn't an extra one. I got confused because I got some special dialogue with the cryptozoologist and Gary the cryptofascist about wömen (from reading the Hjelmdall Man book I think?) and thought that would lead to a thought unlock.

And yea, it's pretty on point how the nationalist thought makes you self-destruct

I really like Disco Elysium's depiction of fascism because media about fascism always focuses on the leadership, rather than the rank and file. People think of fascists as being power hungry maniacs but the kind of person who leads a fascist movement is different from the kind of person who follows one, and the vast majority of fascists are just angry, miserable people who are more interested in inflicting pain on those they perceive as enemies rather than actually doing anything to improve their own situation. Fascist Harry being a pathetic loser who doesn't even understand his own ideology but thinks he's the ubermensch is dead on.

One explanation of Facism (and a lot of right-wing thinking) that resonates for me is they believe a pyramid of power is unavoidable and natural and things are bad because people are in the wrong place. And that often doesn't include them, even if they are not highly ranked.

Vagabong

HUB'S facism is interesting, because it can read like all of his politics, in that it stems directly from his breakup with Dora. Revachol is ruined, not due to any systemic reasons, but because of his bitterness over their failed relationship. A fascist Harry reads as someone attempting to push his own emotional pain onto others, through virulent misogyny and racism.

The rest of post blackout Harrier's politics can be understood through a similar lens. The communist seeks to blame the failure of the relationship on systemic issues; the working and middle class could never co-exist peacefully. At the same time it provides an outlet for Harry's anger at Dora though his invectives against her entire political class.

I'll admit my arguement becomes thinner in the case of Ultraliberal and Moralist HDB. I'd suppose that both point towards his hopes and anxieties towards the futile prospect of salvaging the relationship. In the Ultraliberal case, it represents both the manic dream that things could work out, if only more work was put in, along with the dream that once they were materially comfortable enough, the issues within the relationship would evaporate.

The Moralist mode of thought is the dream that maintaining a poisonous status quo will lead to an eventual Utopia; if only Harry and Dora were to stay together then things would work out, despite the apparent issues within the relationship.

I'm not sure if this stuff leads into Disco Elysium's broader thoughts on politics, but I do think HDB's personal political commitments do speak to his broader character, as contradictory, ill-considered, and transient as they may be.

Televisions aren't a thing in the world of Elysium, are they? Neither are film movies, unless I'm forgetting something. Which makes sense since it seems like photography is a relatively recent invention.

Dunno why I just thought of that now, but it's something I never really thought about before.
