Was it any better than season 2 at actually engaging with the ending to s01?

Also apparently there are another three films on top of the first one.

the movie was decent and at least brought kogami back but it once again ends with akane swearing to get that dastardly sybil system one day

i don't remember, so i'm going to say no

the most compelling thing about the psycho pass franchise is how it chooses to maintain the status quo instead of the expected heroes overthrowing the corrupt system, which is about the most culturally japanese direction the plot could take

Well, at least it doesn't just completely ignore the big climactic ending to s01, I guess.

The movie shows that everywhere in the world not under the Sybil System is now a post-WWIII shithole, and her stance is more that it's a necessary evil that needs to die when a better solution becomes apparent.

And she's also prepared to pull its levers to keep it and its agents in line.

it was the same bullshit they ended season 1 and 2 with to keep the franchise alive and then akane got fired as the protagonist of the series after the movie anyway i guess

anyway the new season is a direct sequel to those 3 additional movies mentioned above that no one has seen so i really dont know if im gonna bother with the new season. season two was awful

Season 2 was by Tow Ubukata, not Urobuchi. The movie was by Urobuchi, and was OK, so if he's back for this one, we might have some decent TV again.

urobuchi seems way overrated. i liked the original madoka series but he's mostly worked on really mediocre shows (this includes psycho pass). i know he's just the writer mainly but still. i get the feeling he's more known for the porn games he worked on but those don't count (and i aint playing those)

It is a good rule of thumb that anything with him as the main writer will be a lot better than anything with him as the 'creative inspiration', or something where he does three episodes before loving off, though. He's either bad at or very unlucky with collaborative works. He also did good work on Thunderbolt Fantasy recently.

Straight up Thunderbolt Fantasy might be better than Madoka Magica. That's not a knock against Shaft, Kajiura, Aoki, Iwakami or Shinbo. It's just so. drat. good. The Jim Henson and Thunderbirds fanboy in me might be a more than a bit biased, though. :shobon:

The lads responsible for Psycho Pass Phase 3 (the movies and the new season) are responsible for such luminary works as the Berserk novel about Grunbeldt, and Special Ops Magical Girl Asuka, sooooo looking kinda dubious

Meanwhile there's a new trailer for the second Thunderbolt Fantasy movie and the only way it could be better is if it introduced a puppet voiced by Yoshiki Fukuyama so that he and TM Revolution could have a battle of the kung fu puppet bands.

Thunderbolt Fantasy is along with Coffin Princess tied for best representation of a typical good D&D campaign in narrative form.

Aside from S2 (which was Ubukata and the guy who went on to do the Rakugo scripts/series comp), pretty much on the money: While Urobuchi probably thought up a good deal of the world building and what-have-you, pretty much every episode on season 1 and the movie was co-written by the Urobutcher and Fukami.

Does that make Gui Niao the GM PC who railroads the party through the campaign and then defeats the main villain himself?

I spent most of the time during the first season going from "Oh this is anime wuxia!" to "Oh this is a DND campaign!" to "Oh this is lupin the third!" finally back to "Oh this is anime wuxia!" during the end.

danmachi s3 announcement just makes me feel ambivalent, like ofc the back of s2 was just awful in a bunch of unexpected ways but in general the production was just not on the same level as s1.

s3 could deliver a more solid segment of the series but without any assurance that either the story or production will be on the same level as s1 i just don't have my blind enthusiasm anymore
