Theatre of Blood is my favorite Vincent Price movie. A hammy Shakespearean actor (Price) fakes his own death and murders all the critics who were harsh on him in elaborate, Shakespearean-themed murders. It's on the Criterion Channel this month and is just loads of fun.

In a more serious vein, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) is still really loving creepy. It's shot like a documentary and has lots of creepy pagan imagery like blood runes and bone talismans.

Mine too. It has this great balance between camp humour and grizzly horror and no one else could have sold the theatricality of the character like Price did.

I really liked the original texas chainsaw massacre. I saw the remake in theatres and it's one of the few movies I've ever walked out on. Now all I can remember about it is that someone brought their kids in the theatre with them to see it. Oof, some people.

Hey, for a fun stupid halloween time check out House (the american one from 1986, not the Japanese one which is also amazing, watch both of them). House is just the right level of loving stupid, and it has George Wendt in it. The sequel has John Ratzenberger. Weird Cheers theme going on there. I can't recommend the sequel though some people seem to like it.

Best vampire movie: Fright Night, the original, with Roddy Mcdowall. It's especially great if you're familiar with Hammer Dracula movies, but you don't have to be to enjoy it.

I think Abominable Dr. Phibes is the best Price movie, myself, but it and Theatre of Blood would make for an amazing double feature you could title "Vincent Price Kills Some Dudes in Elaborate and Awesome Ways".

Also this might be extremely sappy, but on my third date with my wife we planned to watch a movie at her apartment. I took over Dr. Phibes, knowing that she liked horror movies and comedies. She loved it and has since told me that it's one of her favorite memories from when we started dating. Our first dance at our wedding was to "Over the Rainbow", and everybody was like "Oh that's so sweet, from the Wizard of Oz!" but it wasn't, not for us. It's from Dr. Phibes.

Edited to add: Hell yeah Fright Night rocks. Amazing special effects, especially Evil Ed turning into the wolf. Speaking of, I feel bad reading up on Stephen Geoffreys, who played Evil Ed. I thought he was really good in this and assumed he was in a ton of horror and genre movies because of it. Nope, he went into hardcore porno for most of the 90s.

I really enjoyed The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Brian Cox awesome as always. A bit of gore and violence which I'm not super into, but enough creepy atmosphere and paranormal feeling stuff to offset that. Also didn't rely too heavily on jump scares, which would have been easy to do given the spoooooky morgue setting.

And it inspired a tv series! Which I love and have watched more than the films. There's just so much in there- great acting, terrific action scenes, and so many different kinds of horror: suspense, demon possession, body horror, splatter, occultism. And humor, of course.

Sloth Life posted:

I've not seen anyone mention The Woman in Black. Its definitely old school and some of the acting isn't great but if you are sensitive to atmosphere, it is a good choice. Its a grey and dull film which works well once you realise everyone is grieving a lost child, or desperate to protect their own and once you realise the Woman is in the background A LOT not just in the jump scares it feels quite oppressive.
The only reason to watch the remake of The Woman in Black is if you liked Daniel Radcliffe or Ciaran Hinds. The original is so much better. It has a few moments of absolute terror. Real quality stuff.

A Fancy Hat posted:

The Frighteners might not be exactly a horror movie, but I watched it last night and enjoyed it. Michael J Fox is really good, and there's a lot of darkness that's just under the surface of his character that I really enjoy. But of course, the best part of the movie is Jeffrey Combs. He's completely unhinged as an FBI agent that was sent to infiltrate cults for years and never got the necessary therapy to deal with it. He manages to be funny, creepy, pitiable, and despicable depending on the scene. It sucks this did so poorly in theaters because it could have become a pretty fun series of movies.
Jeffrey Combs's line delivery is consistently hilarious. The movie also has Dee Wallace-Stone and Jake Busey going bonkers and they do a good job of it. The performances really make that movie; it deserves more credit than it gets.

The original Wicker Man is weird and great. Almost too low-key for a horror film or a thriller, but it's not completely a mystery either. There's just the growing feeling of something being off in some way you can't define until it all comes out at the end, and the ending isn't just boom, now he's dead. They really draw it out so you can feel the main character's growing realization and despair. The (accidental?) references to Iron Age-ish religion and beliefs is also a bonus.

And of course Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare is the greatest horror movie ever made.

Fun Fact: Joan Hickson, probably best known for the best version recorded of Miss Marple, plays the wife of one of the critics.

I just recently watched The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and it's just an astonishingly powerful and haunting film, despite being literally 100 years old. The set design is absolutely masterful.

Daughters of Darkness, which I never bothered with for years because, after reading a few synopses, I assumed it was a grubby ''let's all drool over the sexy lesbian vampires' schlock thing, but it's actually amazing; it hinges entirely on a mesmerizing performance by Delphine Seyrig.

The remake of House on Haunted Hill is great fun, if not exactly great art. Famke Janssen is wonderful as ever and Geoffrey Rush is just doing his very best coked-to-the-eyeballs James woods impression and it is glorious.

edit: And it has Jeffrey Combs as... a crazy psycho doctor!

I watched this recently too and Seyrig gives legit one of the sexiest performances I've ever seen. I totally buy that every other character in the film is enthralled by her.

Crimson Peak was overlooked when it first came out, and even now kind of feels like a "lost" Guillermo del Toro movie. It's sandwiched between Pacific Rim and Shape of Water. The plot's pretty thin, the characters aren't super memorable (except for maybe Jessica Chastain's role as an insane, murderous sister) but it's still a really fun movie. Why?

Because the house is possibly the best haunted house ever in film. It's a decaying mansion built over a clay mine. The clay is red, which means the water will run red every time you turn on the water. Red clay oozes from every crack in the house. Black moths are all over the house, fluttering around on exposed beams. And there's a hallway that looks like it was designed by someone who thought "I need to make a hallway that looks like it would eat you". At one point in the movie you hear a mournful howl, only for a character to explain that the house just makes that noise sometimes when the wind blows from the east. There's a kitchen full of decaying herbs and spices, an attic room with terrifying mechanical toys, and a basement that connects to a mineshaft and has giant vats of red clay.

And oh yeah, when it snows the loving clay tints the snow bright red.

And perhaps even more memorable are the ghosts. Holy poo poo the ghosts. All drippy and gross and beautifully realized. They look like what would happen if you were brutally murdered and then trapped in the mortal realm. Features are all distorted and weird, but still obviously human.

Highly recommended October watching.

The sequel was fun and goofy and maybe didn't have the verve of the first one but was still worth watching! Also The Taking of Deborah Logan. Noroi is an amazing film; it's Japanese, and is about a ghost investigator making a documentary about some possibly paranormal events event centred around a strange woman.
Entity: A reality TV film crew are making an episode investigating the unexplained deaths of 34 people in a remote Siberian forest. I really enjoyed it :)
They're Watching - a home renovation show goes... a little off the rails.
Gonjiam - Korean found footage film in which a group of volunteers livestreams their exploration of a supposedly haunted asylum. Fun fact: I had to go down to our dark, crumbly, old basement to get laundry after watching this and it was not a fun time for me.

I went through a spate of watching every found footage scary film I could and these were some of my favourites, along with Grave Encounters and Lake Mungo, though the latter messed me up so much I don't think I'll watch it again.

I absolutely hated hated Crimson Peak because to me it was like a very lovely frame around a completely absent picture. The basic plot was almost completely forgotten in favour of a really shiny aesthetic.

Just watched an anthology horror movie called Tales From the Crib: American Nightmares that felt like a better sequel to Tales From the Hood than the actual sequel. It even has Clarence Williams III in it, but he’s not the horror host this time around. Danny Trejo enjoys that honor.

Watched some horror movies lately.

The Video Dead from 1987 is a very bad movie that attempts comedy and fails miserably. It has perhaps the most convoluted zombie rules I've seen and the kills are mostly uninteresting and awkward.
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers is also very bad, but at least it has Linnea Quigley in it.

I've never actually watched Halloween before and that is a very good movie with incredible atmosphere. Halloween 2 I did not find very interesting, very much just another slasher movie.

Anyway, the The Witch is great and people who don't think so are wrong.

Watched The Invisible Man reboot. Pretty good. Does a decent job of building tension and planting seeds that payoff later (both in your face and not).
It also plays off a few horror tropes in a fun way since the 'monster' is invisible.
The ending was ok. You could figure out where it was going after a certain point, but it was still fine.
A big plus is a general lack of musical stings during spooks. They were there, but not overused IMO.

All I can recall of the premise is that a married couple move into a new apartment that has some kind of dimension-portal and the husband gets trapped in the other dimension and tries to figure out how to escape...or something. Also they might have a kid. I remember it being very creepy and well done for a low-budget film I'd never heard of, and there is a nice cliffhanger at the end.

It reminded me of Picnic At Hanging Rock, another spooky film that gave me nightmares as a child.
