Is it a theory yet that Michael is actually a human and the entire show is an extension of a previous test somehow? And the whole reason for Michael not wanting to take off his skin is because there's nothing to take off? I know that's probably not going to happen, but I feel like I want to call dibs.

Hahaha, in the Season 2 episode when they try to go through the Bad Place to get to the Judge for the first time, they run into a Demon who talks about torturing a guy named Brent who hit a stripped with a lobster and died doing a kegstand in the back of a jeep.

Arist posted:The problem with "they should just find a way to live forever in the afterlife" is that we, the viewers, can't do that so any solution that involves it is inherently meaningless. Part of the point is to come to terms with your own inevitable death. I think it's really beautiful. I am going to be bummed if we actually see what happens when you go through the door. There was something really impactful of Janet admitting she doesn't know what happens.

I actually knew that the ending was the characters slowly going through the door... but the execution definitely shook me. Michael and Tahani's endings really took me by surprise, and Chidi leaving earlier than I assumed really hit me. Chidi not having to wait on the bench is when the tears started. Jen's trip and description of visiting Earth as a mortal is the funniest moment of The Good Place. “I guess I’m black, and they do not like black ladies down there.”

My Grandfather's sister was a vegetable on life support and it was a landmark moment for both him and my Grandmother. They both decided then and there that if they would not like to be resuscitated or kept on life support if it meant that they would just be in a vegetive state or if it would mean significant brain damage. My Grandfather made a living will the first time he got lung cancer, but my Grandmother sat on it. So, when she ended up in a vegetive state, my cousins freaked out when my mom pushed for her to be pulled off of life support. She was in a coma and would come in and out at moments, but there was very little hope of actual recovery. It's not that my cousins were being cruel. They loved my Grandmother and there was legitimately a small chance of some sort of recovery. But my mom fought for her to be pulled off of life support because regardless of how much it hurt, it was ultimately what she owed her mother. In short, I feel the notion that Chidi--the man who literally saved the universe--was acting selfish a bit problematic. I just feel like a lot of people are being too literal with their takes on the finale and looking for 1 to 1 allegories to real life things. Like my own anecdote about my grandmother absolutely doesn't line up with the context of the Good Place, but still feels emotionally parallel. The ending of the Good Place is that we can't really prevent death. It's inevitable and part of life no matter what you do. Your best bet is to become your best self, work to help others become best self, and hope that in the end your legacy is that you put more good in the world then when you entered the world.

The thing with Tahani's ending is that she functionally has become one with God or the closest to that in the context of the Good Place. Her path isn't in conflict with Eleanore's, but they are the same. They have transcended their mortal forms and taken on a new one.

I get why people don't like that the Good Place can feel abbreviated at times, but so many shows either spin their wheels or have big reveals that eventually get walked back. Like that ended up being part of the point of Mad Men, that things were cyclical, but it ended up becoming the standard and it's something that tanks shows with good starts like Handmaid's Tale or Maisel. Nothing feels like its progressing in a meaningful place. The Good Place is ironically one of the most alive TV shows. poo poo just changes and it's rare that they can take poo poo back.
