was the original point of these things to shade the long slopey rear windows so the car didn't heat up as much if you parked outside in the sun? and then since the cars that needed shades were cool sports cars, they started getting put on cars with normal rear windows the same way ricers put spoilers on a celica?

Thankfully, right now, you are as wrong as you could be since the 80s-90s are the coolest, most nostalgia auto design going by ~popular opinion~ and that's before you actually get into the idea that the 90s was peak mechanical design as well what with it being the convergence of old style engineering and ease of maintenance with modern things like fuel injection. There are already kids on places like Instagram lusting over Azteks and PT Cruisers so be prepared to head into idea zone.
