I love watching Youtube photography channels for inspiration.

Let's discuss and discover each other's faves.

Nick Carver

Landscape film medium format stuff. Lots of decaying structures and fading americana. Talks you through the whole shoot. Top notch though videos aren't very frequent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRXaNES4wQw

Thomas Heaton

British landscape guy with more of a focus on camping and going on an adventure in the outdoors. Good discussions about composition in his videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jF76LmzY7YY

Art of Photography

More gear focused these days (sigh) but awesome videos in the back catalogue focussing on individual photographers. This video introduced me to Fan Ho, now one of my favourite photographers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmnXHPjhSIM

Frederik Trovatten

Danish guy living in Mexico City. Great street portraits and a good source of inspiration if you feel too shy to ask to take people's photos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CeOFl19SUA

Gareth Danks

Love this guy's positive outlook on street photography. He's a landscape photog mainly so you sort of learn along with him when he does street stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARuGYxOi1RY

Sean Tucker

A lot of his videos focus on the philosophy of photography. Great teacher and presentation style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94Ji1R-ZkKE

This is a video by Sean about his friend, a travel and portrait photographer which I found particularly inspiring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba2OnpjbncQ

John Free

Great perspectives from a guy that's been shooting street for decades. Something he said that's stuck with me: "there's practice in golf, in dancing, in basketball [...] so why is there no practice in photography?"

He puts up a new video every Sunday pretty much, and it's usually just him walking around somewhere in Wales trying to get nice landscape shots.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojlf99LohQk

He does a bit of everything; digital, 35, 120 and large.

I'll edit this and do some more as they occur to me.

I watched a couple of Nick Carver's videos. I don't know if he's mugging it up for the camera, but he seems to turn into an anxious mess when waiting to take his pictures. That being said, he does take a nice photo and it's interesting to watch him take it.

Thomas Heaton makes some really nice videos, but I can't get into the pictures he takes. Going through his portfolio he's got some high quality stuff, so maybe it's more the reality of wanting to make weekly videos.. the images aren't all going to be zingers. But I'd still like to see more consistency.

But watching him turned me on to Adam Gibbs, who seems to produce gold every time. In contrast to Heaton he's not as good a videographer, his videos rely a bit too much on drone footage (which is pretty, I just don't need 5 minutes of it) and it jumps around a lot more, but the photos make me jealous every time.

I mean, look at what he gets out of some rocks in a river gorge:

Was gonna post about this guy today. Been enjoying his videos a lot even though I don’t shoot film. I am now convinced that ‘the medium format look’ is a thing cos he showed some of his Xpro2 shots vs his medium format stuff and the medium format looks incredible whereas the Fuji digital stuff looks bland. Even of the same subject shot at the same focal length.

Now I’m gassing for a Hasselblad 500CM :homebrew:

Yeah I ran across him not long after I started shooting 35mm and it made me really want to shoot medium format, so I went and spent too much on a Fuji Gw690 III and found a pretty nice Mamiya C33 Professional for real cheap at an estate sale.

YOUR LIPS SAY 0, BUT YOUR EYES SAY 1.

I follow a couple of different ones, some of them fairly well known, but I don't see them listed itt:

Mattias Burling - He does a lot of videos reviewing older digital cameras. They're quite cool, and he gets good results. I enjoy his dog, Gunpowder.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW6InQP7mIU

Samuel Lintaro Hopf - All street photography all the time. He doesn't have much of a personality, but he does a lot of cool, mostly European, travel photography videos. The one below has been one of my favorites. He's a Ricoh GRIII Ambassador, so you'll get a lot of that, but he also uses and reviews others.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_tpHagE2HU

Maarten Heilbron - The Mr. Rogers of PhotoTube. His product reviews are really thorough, and he often goes over most of the settings in the menus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vegk3MXNWgg

Ken the loving Sperg - This motherfucker is HIGH on the spectrum. His videos are awful. He readily admits it. He rambles a lot. He rarely stays on topic. He's hard to look at. He's hard to listen to. However, he will drop some knowledge...like real technical poo poo. He's mostly Fuji these days, but he talks a lot about Canon and Nikon too. Good luck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0195DmiQ38c

Kai Wong - You can't wander PhotoTube without tripping over one of his videos. Everyone knows him. Everyone hate watches him, including me. I mostly watch him after a Ken video as a palate cleanser. Kai's observations amuse me. (Bonus: Videos that include Lok are the best)

I like Kai and Mattias Burling, they have a brand and stick to it mostly. Kai's "here's a 10 grand camera that isn't out yet I'm going to almost drop it then do a dumb dance in public to test the face tracking" doesn't get old to me.

Evan Ranft is like if a focus group made a photo youtuber to appeal to 16-29 year olds: tattoos, dumb haircut, limited edition sneakers, constant humblebragging, "rise and grind" BS, appears to be oddly successful for no reason. He gives a lot of advice that seems to just be "I did this you should too." He's not a bad photographer but he has no real style and a weird Stepford positive attitude plus for some reason the way he says "make photos" drives me mad.

Raft must have at least one good video out there because he had wormed his way into my subscriptions. Then I watched a minute of some more recent video and questioned whether I had a massive head wound or had always been that dumb.

Brendan van Son is similar. Some dudebro in a stupid hat that somehow has enough money to fly all over the world and produce the most bland and uninteresting photos ever taken. But he constantly shows up in recommendations.

I do love Kai but I liked the Digital Rev days more than what he does now. Lok is the best obs.

I think in general a lot of phototube just bangs on about video now because photo tech has got so good there isn’t much to say. Personally I don’t care about video at all. Except when it’s Camera Conspiracies. Then I will watch every single video.

Yeah as someone who gives not a poo poo about video the amount of content about video is annoying but then I remember that young people want to be youtubers the way we all wanted to be astronauts when I was a kid.

What the gently caress even is this video? Is someone really watching a dude pack a suitcase and fly? I guess saying the word "aperture" occasionally counts as PhotoTube now.

Youtube is packed with instagrammers pulling this poo poo because it's (relatively) easy to drag in followers by gaming youtube's algorithms with the way their recommendation system works. Gawk at this douche trying to explain his exposure settings.

Oh man I was going back and forth on bringing Ken up, this dude is capital C Crazy and a lot of his videos are straight up unhinged, like when he spent 20 minutes just yelling about how rude Nikon support was for not giving him a loaner of the new Z camera even though he spent six months dunking the gently caress out of the line beforehand.

Absolutely knows his poo poo on a technical level though, he's got a bunch of videos about hypersync and other techniques that are really loving cool, and he apparently does have enough legit connections to be the first one to break a lot of fuji rumor stuff (iirc he was the first one to call that the Xpro-3 had a nontraditional LCD and aside from the name, he's called basically every shot about the X-T4 that we know so far)

Worth rooting through his videos for the occasional gem, if you can get past all the weird physics truther stuff.

He is an absolute oddball that somehow can’t fathom how he never gets loaned any gear BUT in a sea of absolute inauthenticity he is ‘real’ and very watchable because of it. Also man does he know a lot about photography.

He’s a bit of a remnant of the ‘old’ internet when it was just unglamorous nerds banging on about nerd stuff. I’m not surprised us goons have a soft spot for him.

While we’re slagging people off, I can’t stand Fro. Used to be a subscriber but his condescending tone really pissed me off and the endless shilling of his FroVault software or whatever it was called that basically just saves a list of gear serial numbers.

I do wish he'd go a little bit more into his post-production process though as sometimes he just kinda does things without explaining why.
