just finished the shadowkeep campaign and.... man what a weird loving campaign to launch alongside your giant free to play release. not even the reskins i have a problem with, just the complete reliance upon knowledge of previous fights. pretty massively disappointing after i let myself get excited about the weird concept art, though obviously i was not expecting any actual new enemy types given it's a destiny expansion

annoying bug:

the weekly heroic story bounty that eris gives randomly completed itself after i redid a different story mission with a friend. i claimed it but didn't get powerful gear, and it didn't show the challenge as completed in the map. i just did the heroic story mission and... still did not get the powerful gear, nor did the challenge complete, even though i finished the bounty :smith:

re: lore, i strongly suggest that if you read nothing else you read the books of sorrow which is all about the history of the hive, their bonkers religion, and contains a pretty large amount of the cosmology/philosophy/etc. most of the 'evil' races are operating under (tl;dr: hyper-darwinism/social darwinism where being a cock also gives you superpowers)

the hive are by far the most fleshed out enemy race in the lore, but it's really interesting to me that they're the only ones who seem entirely molded and aligned with the darkness (assuming the worm gods are borne of it). like, normal ol vex you run into seem to be on a different path from the "sol divisive" faction of the black garden, who have adopted the darkness. same with normal ol cabal (who simply wanted to steal the traveler's power) versus emperor calus's Nihilism Party Boat, who encountered the darkness at the edge of space and went "oh we're all completely hosed, but let's do everything we can to stick around for the end of the world."

oddly, i don't think we've ever seen any fallen follow the darkness, as much as they seem to follow just about every other evil faction the game has to offer. they're on the run from the darkness and desperately chasing the traveler trying to win back its favor, but i don't think we've ever seen any go "hmm maybe the darkness has some good ideas"

The thing with removing the legacy campaigns is that there's good reasons beyond filesize. If it was just disk space, I do think they should have found a way to allow you to install that content on-demand. I think the larger problem is that the gear progression and difficulty is completely hosed, and there's probably a large level of maintenance. required. I think the way the campaigns tie into the open world might be hard to unfuck, too; it'd be weird if when you warp into the campaign on Mars you like had access to escalation protocol and public events you can't normally get to.

Man, I should take a look at my like 20+ quests relating to destinations going away. I still have some bullshit to do on Mars for sure (Ikelos?). Might just go ahead and preemptively drop anything I don't expect to get done within 3 months, but I feel like if I do Bungie will be like "surprise anyone with an in-progress legacy exotic quest just gets the gun!!" a day before the expansion release or something.

Man, getting rid of Titan means losing the awesome Cayde-6 lore dump quest (I think part of Ace of Spades?). It’s also the last big mention of the Deep Stone Crypt in the lore, so it’s kind of annoying to me that it’s going away right as the Deep Stone Crypt is visited.

Which, by the way, as the only remaining person who cares about this game’s lore, I am still deeply pissed that they tossed off the “Deep Stone Crypt is the next raid” reveal in a blog post instead of a cinematic trailer or something. I look forward to it being incredibly underwhelming from both a lore and gameplay perspective, finally destroying the last bit of mystique left in the lore. At least the skyboxes will hopefully be nice.

Your average player of this type of game probably gives two fucks about lore. Play a jrpg if you want good lore. Or some other rpg focused game.

ah yes, players of mmos don't usually care about lore, that is why ff14, an mmo that requires you to play basically a 200 hour linear rpg story to access the endgame, is notably unpopular

i'll concede you're not that wrong in the overall loot game space (warframe has a similarly unclear story, though much more intentionally; diablo 3's story is a joke and you can completely skip the campaign in favor of seasonal mode) but if you're going to spend the time, money, and gigabytes on story, it would be nice if it was presented in a coherent manner

also in another case of bungie just seeming to be literally unwilling to look at any other games on the market, ff14's upcoming content squish is far better - it shortens the core story of the most dull fetch quest missions without removing any meaningful content, and certainly not any meaningful instanced content

bungie walks the most incredibly frustrating line between transparency (seventeen page screeds by luke smith) and opaqueness (taking days to respond to basic bug reports on reddit, giving mere "thank you for the feedback" responses to widely-agreed-upon community demands with no timetable or indications that they recognize it as a problem)

because of this, I do genuinely wonder: did they intend, when they set out back on Forsaken, to add more Crucible and Gambit maps over the seasons, and realize late that this was impossible given their circumstances, whatever the gently caress those circumstances are?

genuinely I think the best thing Bungie could do for anyone in the community to ever trust them again would be to break down exactly how much time and effort go into these things and why they are impossible for them to do. like, yeah, it'd be admitting their toolsets are busted and they've moved a significant portion of the company to their next project(s), but we already loving know that, so just admit it and move on. we know your poo poo's broken, and you don't have to worry about Activision getting mad at you admitting it, so just tell the community that your testing and QA is lacking and it's incredibly hard for you to make new content due to a variety of mistakes

i am also extremely suspect that it took a year for the Gambit & Prime revamp, which was announced during the big Luke Smith post last year, to (supposedly) make it into Beyond Light, still with no details. that screams "we actually hosed up and this should have been done sooner, but we quickly realized we couldn't do a turnaround on this within a season because it'd break too much poo poo or was just too difficult"

good bugfix patch, tbh. today's TWAB has a big "this is fine" vibe but does have a couple notable things. next week's patch:

quote:

Fixes targeting controller remapping.
Issue where double-tapping buttons sometimes does not trigger Dodge or other abilities.
Issues where weapons don’t fire when pulling a trigger.
Issue where Stormtrance would sometimes not function.
Fixes an issue where Witherhoard deals excessive amounts of damage to various bosses.
Fixes an issue where solo completion of the Prophecy dungeon does not unlock the associated Triumph.
Fixes an issue where various reward sources are dropping at 750 Power, rather than at the Guardian’s Power Level.
Fixes an issue where the Tommy’s Matchbook Catalyst quest was removed from player inventory.

don't scrap your raid gear:

quote:

In our May 14 TWAB we announced that gear would begin to have a Max Power Level starting in Season of Arrivals, but that weapons and armor from the Last Wish and Garden of Salvation raids would be granted exceptions. Currently, this gear doesn’t indicate that, but it will in a future update. Both armor and weapons from Last Wish and Garden of Salvation will be updated retroactively with the Season of Arrivals watermark and will have a Season 14 Max Power Level.

Additionally, all armor from all other Destiny 2 raids will be updated retroactively with the Season of Arrivals watermark and will have a Season 14 Max Power Level.

known issues:

quote:

Grenade Launchers may be causing crashes when used in the Crucible.
Console players may experience blacked out emblems, invisible ships, and a Power Level of 0 in orbit. To resolve this issue, click here and follow the directions.
The Almost Mighty Exotic Ghost Shell and the Saint's Vocation Exotic ship appear invisible.
Some players are unable to accept the weekly "Means to an End" quest from the Prismatic Recaster.
The "Nascent Dawn 1/5" quest step can't be completed because the Sleeper Node at CB.NAV/RUN.()Dynamo.Approach.Arch is missing.
The “Become Legend” quest step to reach 950 Power doesn't update when players reach 950 Power. This will update when players reach 1000 Power.
The Tommy's Matchbook Catalyst quest has been removed from player inventories.
The "Upgrade Gift Ranks" Triumph doesn't track gift ranks purchased at the Prismatic Recaster.
The "Prophecy Dungeon Solo" Triumph doesn't unlock when players solo the Prophecy dungeon.
The "Contact: Heavy Hitters" Triumph doesn't accurately update when the appropriate Taken boss killed.
