They probably just kept asking about the group in front and never asked for the leader. You might not get an accurate time gap but the race leader car is a completely different colour to the rest, they should have known from that.

Germany had put some people there and then all of a sudden the Dutch are just attacking continuously until one of them got away and then everyone sat up. All they'd have had to do is one of them go there and start working, not even super hard and that break is caught before they get to the race track.
