Are there any indications that the new season is going to go ahead as planned? I'm trying to decide if I get the sports tv package back on (first world problems) but cycling is the only thing I really would be getting it for.
I just can't tell if Europe is stable enough yet. They're not melting down like USA but the sporadic outbreaks and local lockdowns must be causing some concern with the governing bodies.

Exactly, like we might get the first couple of races and then they find a few riders have it and that's it until next year.

That's what makes it so uncertain, but even if 50% of the races go ahead maybe they'd consider the season a success?

I decided I'm not getting the sports package. Seems like second wave is happening in Europe so I can't imagine more than a few races going on. If I'm wrong I'll just watch them on youtube.

The Tour of California was always a bit strange, they'd have a few cool stages but lots of boring ones too, plus the commentary always sucked. Maybe when America finishes collapsing and California becomes the Federated states of the West Coast along with a few others, a new, better race can develop.

Off topic but I thought I had seen all the cool old docos on youtube and then I found this the other day looking for something else. Some sweet bikes in there, and some old pros in the race.

Caja Rural consistently has the best kit each year I reckon. Their bikes aren't as nice as those dark green De-Rosa's they had a year or two ago but they aren't bad. The team Rally would look better if they had the logo in orange on a white band around them sort of like the old lotto ones.

One of the helicopter cameras has a dead pixel or something, it's only one of them and it's really noticable when they use it. Has been all season. Not a complaint just amusing and also I keep thinking the tv has a problem and then being "oh yeah the helicopter".

Are there any other good cycling forums with racing discussion etc? Weight weenies are almost always fighting about disc brakes vs. rim brakes. Bike forums is so broken up into tiny subforums with micromanaging mods that there is very little actual discussion. I don't know of any others, I just like reading other peoples take on things, and people who are good at twitter and stuff posting relevant links etc.

It must be pretty hard being a pro-rider, what if you actually need to take muscle relaxants or something after a race becuase you are hosed? I have to take Naproxen every other bike ride because my back gets sore if I over-do things, being a pro would be hard enough without the scrutiny on legit treatments for pain or anything else. I get that there are reasons people take some stuff to mask other stuff, just trying to feel how lovely it would be being micromanaged like that.

Dunno if anyone watches the cyclocross but the finish of the women's in Val De Sole was pretty tight and very interesting. I was a little disappointed in the course though. For travelling all the way to Italy I thought maybe the course would be a little more like the mountain biking they do in Val De Sole, but it was just a roped ff course covered in snow. Guess it didn't matter though as it was still good racing.

Does anyone have a good rec or two for history books or memoirs that deal with pro cycling? I got into following this sport during the pandemic and would like to get some better context for why things are done the way they are

Depends how far back you want to go but for me, my favourites are:

We were young and carefree by Laurent Fignon, a french pro who won the tour twice but was more famous for losing by 8 seconds to Greg Lemond.

Rough Ride by Paul Kimmage, a young Irish pro dealing with reaching a level where doping becomes the norm and having to choose.

In search of Robert Millar by Richar Moore, about a Scottish pro.

Slaying the Badger by Richard Moore about Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond and their battles and alliances

They aren't so much about the history of cycling but give you good idea of cycling at the time. If you want older ones I can't remember the names but there is a good one about Fausto Coppi, and I remember another good one about Jacques Anquetil. Eddy Merckx has had some good books written about him also.

Two essentials: “A dog in a hat” by Joe Parkin. Memoirs of an American pro who moved to Belgium in the mid80s and went full native, never had much success, but really cool stories.

“The Rider” by Tim Krabbe. A fictional account of a single road race by a high-level amateur/semi-pro in the Netherlands. Written from the point of view of the racer as he progresses through the single race, what he’s feeling, the random thoughts going through his head, the tactics, musings on cycling history, etc. A wonderful book.

Oh yeah forgot about The Rider, probably because I only have it on Kindle. There was a little doco last year about it where two pros went and rode the route of the race in The Rider, and talked about it with the writer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiaitFPHtqw

That race was amazing; the break lasting to the Poggio, Pogacar not being able to attack away clear, VDP and Wout marking each other, and Matej. Man, he just drifted across that gap, slipped past everyone and then nearly killed himself staying away. So nail-biting.
Also whenever I see VDP and Wout doing their thing I just get this warm feeling inside, like they must have a strange relationship growing up competing against each other all the time. Like when Alaphillipe crashed in that race the other year while he was with them and they just like looked at each other and shared a mental laugh before pressing on. I can't help but be reminded of this comic when they race together

Pretty poo poo news for Colbrelli, has a subcutaneous ICD implanted which at least in Italy will bar him from competition. It was cool how he had been moving from just sprinting to also contesting classics etc.

What might be cool but also cruel would be a long TT or TTT, like 65km long. Actually what I'd really like is if they'd bring back that race, the Trofeo Baracchi which is a two rider TTT over about 100km. That might be really interesting.

How is Wout so good at this? I don't know if he's a grand tour winner unless it's one without lots of climbing but he seems pretty dominant so far in the Dauphine. Big stages still to come though.
Also I've been trying to enjoy the Womens Tour but the coverage is really bad, no distance and time gap information and lots of video cutting out. It's a shame because the racing seems good. They're doing it over 4g for some reason.

Yeah this is really disappointing. Women's cycling right now is generally much more exciting than the men's events because there's a lot of standout individuals but not so many concentrated in single teams, so tactics are all over the place and big upsets keep happening. Some of the most entertaining races over the last couple of years have been the women's but the coverage is abysmal.

It's like they haven't figured out that if you want more people to watch women's cycling they have to actually be able to see it. Unless it's a funding thing, like they're too scared to pump too much money into it in case it doesn't take off, but the catch is that if you don't spend enough then your audience doesn't grow to a sustainable level.

Geraint Thomas is the most boring rider. One of the slightly older generation that grind up behind a team train and then launch when they're almost at the finish.
