To carry on with the previous Bryantchat, hopefully throwing Javy's name out there was just cover since I'm pretty sure Wrigleyville would burn if he was dealt and I haven't read anything about the Ricketts upping the insurance policies on anything.

It may be the post-season hangover kicking in but I do wonder if Bryant is that guy that's going to be an MVP candidate when healthy but seemingly has a hand/knee/shoulder thing every year that renders him merely just really good. That's not exactly something that gets better as you age and by all accounts he's not signing that extension Theo/Jed spoke of so if you can find a GM with fond memories of 2016 and willing to deal plug and play parts you have to listen.

My biggest fear right now is they sign Castellanos and get Gary Gaetti-ed as he turns back into the guy he was most of this year while Jason Heyward's deteriorating defense is shoehorned in center.

Bryant has now injured himself two years in a row sliding. Shoulder last year, knee this year. He also made some boneheaded comments about how "I don't know how to slide well" which, uh, maybe try to work on that one dude. It's kind of important.

As for Castellanos his defense is hilariously bad, and sticking him in an OF with Schwarber LF and Heyward CF might be one of the worst defensive OF's in baseball, if not the worst. It can sort of play in Wrigley since the OF is so small, but good luck taking that on the road. Also while Castellanos probably isn't going to OPS 1.000 for his next team like he did for the Cubs, he definitely benefited hugely from getting away from Comerica and his underlying numbers don't really hint at anything unsustainable going on. He never walks I guess, but that's not new.

My guess for how it plays out (quoting to cut down on space)

quote:

NL:

Rookie of the Year
1. Alonso
2. Soroka
3. Tatis, Jr

Manager of the Year
1. Counsell
2. Shildt
3. Roberts

MVP
1. Bellinger
2. Yelich
3. Rendon

Cy Young:
1. deGrom
2. Strasburg
3. Scherzer

AL:

Rookie of the Year
1. Alvarez
2. Means
3. Jiminez

Manager of the Year
1. Cash
2. Boone
3. Melvin

MVP
1. Bregman
2. Trout
3. Betts

Cy Young
1. Cole
2. Verlander
3. Morton

AL MVP gets tough after the top two. I'd consider voting for either Semien or Chapman tbh. And Trout would be my first place but I don't think he'll win this year due to Bregman's comparable numbers, better health, and playoff team.

Edited to add cy young

Let's gooooo Yankees.

loving hate facing the Astros and their piece of poo poo park. I also envy the toughness of their team which came through in 2017. The Red Sox making GBS threads on them kind of shocked me last year, and I hope we can do the same thing to them this year. The lineup is much different than it was in 2017, namely one DJ LeMahieu. Even with Paxton going on that winning streak, I really have no confidence in him in the postseason until I see him do it. Tanaka is going to give you a winnable game, and Severino is in the same boat with Paxton.

I honestly think Baldelli should have a shot at Manager of the Year. He's somehow turned a bunch of nobodies into a 101-win team. The consistency he's gotten out of a squad that is dealing with injuries and streaks and just plain not being that good is impressive.

But Boone will probably get it for the same reason plus being in New York.

edit: how the gently caress did I miss being beaten by that much time. weird.
