I've only seen it once, and I remember after watching it just thinking how cool that movie is. Like, the style was fantastic. And I don't even know if cool is quite the right word to describe it, but that was the gut feeling I had afterward.

This thread is so great. I love how ONE single screen grab in a film that has thousands or millions of them can spark a memory for people that's instantly remembered and it's really fun to look at and dissect cool individual shots in ways that make me take a look at the director and film makers. I ADORE attention to detail and soaking in the ways that films make me feel based on things like framing, lighting, angles and everything that goes into that. It's especially refreshing to pore over a lot of these given how much green screen poo poo we all see now where barely any thought goes into things. I think of Halloween as a good example of what I'm talking about as it relates to old school art. It's not a great film, really, at least on its face but I love it because of how it's filmed. And the music. The acting is rough, the pacing is slow and it's very rough around the edges but EVERY...SINGLE...SHOT...is John Carpenter MAKING you look at it and spinning "boring" into "compelling" and the way he shoots it creates crazy suspense. No Country For Old Men is another one in this vein, where you just can't take you eyes off it. Casino is another one. Dr. Strangelove... It's a bit similar to how good comic book artists can create a scene in one double page spread and make you turn the page. Not sure If I'm explaining this right and I know I'm rambling but good directing and cinematography draws me into a film as much as bad acting and lovely CGI take me out of one. blah blah blah...sorry BiggerBoat fucked around with this message at 22:55 on Mar 15, 2025 |

BiggerBoat posted:This thread is so great. It is fun to see everything you can learn about a film from a single frame. It shows narrative tone, scope, intention and a bunch more. Not to mention you can gauge age and what technological level the filmmaking was at. There is a lot to learn about film just be analyzing individual images. The only reason I guessed Moneyball is because the aspect ratio and color correction look like Moneyball. I don't remember that scene and indeed I've only seen the movie once.

I wouldn't have guessed any of these films based on your criteria there. For some reason, I can recognize a single shot here and there based on a lot of things. Cool thing is, like you said, I'm not always entirely sure WHY or HOW I know it but seeing it captured in a moment triggers my memory BiggerBoat fucked around with this message at 00:23 on Mar 16, 2025 |

My superpower is that I can instantly recognize shots from Solo (starring Mario Van Peebles) even though I've never seen the movie.
